Pastor weighing plans to burn Qurans amid U.S. warnings

A Florida pastor told CNN on Tuesday that while his congregation still plans to burn Qurans to protest the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the church is "weighing" its intentions.

Terry Jones, pastor of Dove World Outreach Center in Gainesville, Florida, who was interviewed on CNN's "American Morning," said the congregation is taking seriously the warning from the U.S. military that the act could cause problems for American troops.

"We have firmly made up our mind, but at the same time, we are definitely praying about it," Jones said.

"We are definitely weighing the situation. We are weighing the thing that we're about to do. What it possibly could cause. What is our actual message. What are we trying to get across."

This is a ridiculous display of hate making. Perhaps the Pastor ought to look at the people... all people... as one. We are here by one God, for one reason. Burning, denouncing or any other from of prejudice is purely ego driven. Ego to me is the acronym for Edge God Out. This from a man who has the position to lead others. Really; What would Jesus do?

Deanna, your statement "all people as one" is great. We look at them as equal and they look at us as infidel's. You have no experience. So, travel to a Muslim dominated society and live for a few years. See if YOU are treated the way you suggest we treat them.

REMEMBER THAT WHEN JESUS COMES BACK TO EARTH--HE WILL COME AS A WARRIOR TO FIGHT SATAN!! YES...JESUS WENT INTO TEMPLES AND DESTOYED THEM WHEN SO MUCH SINNING WAS GOING ON!! HE WILL RETURN WHEN ONLY GOD HIMSELF KNOWS OF THE TIME AND DATE....BUT AS TO TO QUESTION OF "WHAT WOULD JESUS DO? HE DESTROYED EVIL MANY TIMES WHEN HE WAS ANGRY...AND HE WILL RETURN TO US AND THE BELIEVERS IN HIM WILL BE SAVED!! THANK YOU JESUS...FOR BEING MY LORD AND SAVIOR!! THE PASTOR HAS THE RIGHT TO DO WHAT HE WANTS.....HE IS NOT MURDERING INNOCENT AMERICANS AS THE TERRORIST MUSLIMS HAVE AND BELIEVE THAT 100 LASHINGS TO A WOMAN WHO COMMITS ADULTRY IS OK! THEIR SO-CALLED WORSHIP BOOK IS A BOOK OF HATE!!!

I believe that Chinamen were told no more to California in our history, Cubians from Cuba were stopped in our ocean when trying to get to Florida, Mexicans were stopped at our border, but none of these killed our people but Muslins did in 9/11 and we see them burn our flag overseas but one man at one church is considering burning their book and its a big deal when did Americans start giving in to Muslins and our miltary is fighting to keep our freedom and they are not doing it. IF YOU MUSLINS DO NOT LIKE OUR RULES, BELIEFS GO HOME !

Deanna I agree with you. Isn't this the definition of the anti-Christ? This is a complete act of hatred. Jesus' message was one of love. Today's "christian" seems to me to be a movement formed by the anti-Christ. It is really quite saddening to see Jesus' message so warped.

I agree with Linda! I don't want my children near someone that supplies the Koran in my neighborhood and the man that is destroying the Koran – do unto your neighbor as your neighbor do unto you!.. We have been kind in letting them into our country which stands for GOD and THE BIBLE other religions do not burn our flag and kill like at 9/11. I think NY people should stop the Muslins from building anything near the 9/11 site – its like stepping on their graves!

Every religion has its share of radicals this also includes Christians. In America those radicals are called KKK they are terrorist who always claim to be Christian, but the KKK does not represent Christianity as a whole. Just like Middle Eastern terrorist do not represent Muslims as a whole. Being Muslim is NOT a race there are Americans not from the Middle East that are Muslim. Just as there are people who are Christians who are not from America. Bottom line terrorist are terrorist whether Christian or Muslim and no religion represents terrorism. Terrorist represent terrorist and anyone with common sense should see this.

A bit extreme... 'but' Muslims demand equality while running around the world blowing up innocent people. So what's the answer?... Anyone holding a Passport from a muslim Dominant country is no longer allowed into the civilized countries of the world. No travel, No Visa's, No Immigration and NO entry.

The BIBLE was buried, burned and stepped on but GOD prevails. Our BIBLE says DO NOT KILL are Muslins jealous because ours has with stood time because it is the only WORD of GOD.

First off 9/11 had nothing to do with Islam and true Muslims would never do anything like that. Those involved in 9/11 are and were nothing but terrorist plain and simple. For someone to burn any holy book just says to me they are not religious in any way at all!!!

It's a shame that the White House has taken this nut so seriously. The proper approach would be to dismiss this Pastor Jones as a small-time lunatic, which he is, and publicly state that they don't expect Muslims of good faith to respond to the bait. By getting all "doomsday" about it, they just ratchet up the stakes. And newsflash, radical Islam is going to target Americans anyway, whether one nut burns the Koran or rescues 10 Muslim kids from a burning building.

I am suprised that the government wants this one man to stop and don't do this and they let the media blow this story up to the public. Then instead of them controlling the issue they want the common American to not speak out but the are concerned about the Muslin people- What do they expect we Americans have freedom of opinion and the govenment wants us to bend down? The Muslins want to cause us to get nasty about this but We Americans will let this slide and not cause a Holy War. We do forgive but we don't forget!

Don't worry Muslins won't send someone into a burning building to resue their children from burning up. Americans do whether they are Muslins, Mexicans, or any other kind 9/11 shows what Americans will do for their children. Muslins send children to blow up other countries children.

Either way, both religions are wrong Why don't we all forget our fanatical little religious books. All of us, and get on with our lives. The world will be a much better place.

@DocRock: You hit it on the head. People like @mother5 and @LINDA are an embarrassment to rational Americans. If we can ever evolve from the confines of religion (atheism is growing among the educated), we will be so much better off as a people. Unfortunately that probably won't happen in our lifetime, but one can hope.

Nowhere in the Bible does God or Jesus force us to accept Him. Jesus fulfilled the Old Testament and we live under the New Testament. God says whoever believes and accepts my Son shall have everlasting life. Meaning we can't force Jesus on anyone. When Jesus was alive He did not force Himself on anyone. He actually allowed them to kill Him rather than force them to follow Him. Which He could have easily done. Jesus did not destroy anybody or anything. He turned over tables in the temple for the business transaction "the hustlin" they where doing in the temple. He did not strike anyone in the temple or tear down any temple items. Our duty as Christians is to live a Christ-like life and spread the Good News of His word. People have the choice to accept His word those who don't, that's between them and God. Jesus never attacked other religions, remember Christianity is love and Islam is Peace. Some people who claim either to be Christian or Muslim and do or say things that do not reflect their religion only reflects who THEY really are as people. Remember Muslim or Christian is a religion, NOT a race or nationality when people get an understanding of this then we can begin to have intelligent conversation.

They have the right to say what they want, they have the right to free speech, just as we all do, as repulsive as they are. But when they call for a "National" protest, they imply that they represent the rest of the country. This is insulting. They represent no one but themselves. Any decent American can see right thru this. What's next, pass out the KoolAid? Is this so called minister related to the infamous Jim Jones?

Question: Didn't even God get mad and cause the flood that covered the earth to wipe out the evil ? We are not God but we are to protect the USA that is in GOD WE TRUST what our country stands on and if we don't want them to burn our flag and burn our Bibles (which is the only word of God) then we shouldn't do theirs but if they don't like our morals, beliefs MUSLINS should leave and stay in their country.

Actually, @mother5, this country was founded on the basis of religious freedom and secularism. Several of the founding fathers were actually atheists. If you think it was based on your branch of Christianity, you're sadly mistaken.

Sounds great. I'm guessing you are already in the United States military doing your part to keep our nation safe? If not then you are going down to the recruiter tomorrow and join right? After all we don't want to sit around playing video games, watching tv, and blogging while other people are risking their lives for us. Anyone who hasn't served, and is able to, should not be allowed to provoke other peoples/countries into conflict. Check the age limits, it's never too late to prove your love of our nation through voluntary military service.

Like most Americans, I deplore the plans of Rev. Terry Jones and his congregants. Since he and his congregation continue to pray, let us who are believers also pray that the voice of the Holy Spirit may prevail, and the church, led by the Spirit of Jesus, may change its plans.

If they persist in doing this, and our government people believe it will put our troops in harm, the government may legitimately renounce that church's tax exempt status and bring charges of treason against it's leaders. I for one believe that this must come to pass to quell the growing crazed evangelicals demanding another crusade. This must stop now.
