Obama: Quran-burning plan is 'recruitment bonanza for al Qaeda'

A plan by a small Florida church to burn Qurans on September 11, which has triggered worldwide controversy, is a "recruitment bonanza for al Qaeda," President Obama said Thursday.

"You could have serious violence in places like Pakistan or Afghanistan" as a result of the proposal by the Gainesville, Florida-based Dove World Outreach Center, Obama said on ABC's "Good Morning America." "This could increase the recruitment of individuals who'd be willing to blow themselves up in American cities, or European cities."

The Rev. Terry Jones, pastor of the Dove Center, has said he will proceed with the plan Saturday, the ninth anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks, despite increased pressure to abandon the proposal and warnings that going ahead could endanger U.S. troops and Americans worldwide.

Now don`t get me wrong, I think anyone who burns any book for any reason is an ignorant redneck, however if it is their book and they burn it on their own property and they aren`t violating any local burn bans then it is not my business – nor is it the president`s.

This reminds me of that old saying "If a tree falls in the forest and no one is there to hear it, does it make a noise?" Well if no one paid attention to some little redneck preacher in podunk Florida would any of this have made any difference?

gar, i completely agree. the pastor's actions are certainly offensive, but the sensationalist coverage of the story is what gives him a pedestal.

i wrote an article yesterday that says basically what your comment did...

The first I became aware of the Taliban was there use of artillery to blow up Buddha statues. Seems this is more of the same. This church and its pastor are just another form of culture imperialism and denigrating those who have different beliefs.

Religion is a crutch for the weak minded or the fearful. Muslim extremist threats? So what! If they attack we fight back. That's called self defense. We cannot and should not allow ourselves to be intimidated physically or psychologically. We need to always remember that we are on the right side of history and their intolerance is not. Fredom of religion must be protected because it is a form of expression, even if I personally feel it's all pretty silly and hope people will out grow the need for a fantasy to sustain themselves. Freedom of expression by burning a Koran or Bible or flag or draft card or bra must also be similarily tolerated and protected. This Includes supporting the legal building of a Muslim Center anywhere in NYC or the USA. The real test of supporting the American way is passed by being able to support a person's right to do something even if you don't particularly like what's being done.

While the burning of the Qur'an is a ridiculously ill-conceived act, contrary to Jesus' golden rule, I am amazed at the level of ire that has been displayed by world leaders because of it. If only Christians could get this kind of mileage from the mindless killing of minority Christians in other countries! Of the top 20 worst countries for Christians to live in 2009, 14 were Islamic. What does that say? And yet few government leaders say a thing! The fact that there are people indicted in Saudi Arabia for simply wearing a cross, all while western governments remain sycophantic for reasons of oil-money, is disgusting.
