Release of U.S. hiker Sarah Shourd 'canceled,' Iran says

Iran's semi-official news agency ILNA reported Friday that the release
of American hiker Sarah Shourd has been "canceled," because legal procedures have not been completed.

Shourd, one of three American hikers held in Iran for more than a year,
was supposed to be released Saturday.

She, along with Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal, were detained July 31, 2009,  after they allegedly strayed across an unmarked border into Iran while hiking  in Iraq's Kurdistan region.

I called it the moment I saw the original story. I said to myself there was no way they were going to release her. These people are as predictable as the sunrise.

It was a common form of torture during VietNam to tell a POW they were going to be released... they'd be taken from their cells, cleaned up, and escorted to a supposed drop point, only to be turned around at the last second and brought back to be beaten and returned to their cells.

Can't blame them, they are likely hipsters or "eco tourists" who wanted to be both hip/edgy by hiking in a warzeone next to a hostile nation.

I'll go one further. I bet these young adults, certainly nowhere near kid age, 31? thought they were just 'groovin' . Dollars to donuts they're hippy types who thought more of Iran then America to begin with. I bet they're growing up now.

Guess this is what happens if you want to be "edgy" by hiking in Iraq near Iran.

It may be a blessing they canceled it. I had a terrible feeling they were not actually going to release her, but were going to execute her instead (perhaps in retaliation of the Quran burning)

Iran wont execute american hikers. Regardless as how the media and american extremists portray them as an "insane" government with "scary" leaders they are not really like that. They are a standard dictatorship, North Korea with an actual weird and insane government didn't even execute their american hostages.

Terribly disappointing, but not surprising. Still not sure why these knuckleheads were backpacking in Iraq on the Iranian border. Will their next trip be sky diving in North Korea? Dumb...no good reason for doing this whatsoever. Maybe they were spying? I mean, really, any reasonable Iranian would think that because no American could possibly be stupid enough to be there for recreational purposes. Upon release, I wonder if this woman was planning a nice jog in a thunderstorm with a copper suit on?

Its very typical of how Iran operates. We'll never know if promises were made to them in return and didn't pan out but Iran likes to look like they're in charge, that no one can push them around. Looks like they're holding out for some kind of concession or "payoff" to me. I certainly don't discount the mess being created by Reverend Jones and the opportunities he's giving to Radical Islam

Typical Iran government response. They are such liars....just like they are lying about their nuclear program being for "peaceful" purposes.

I guess I would lie too. My letter would read: Dear Iran: We are not going to bomb you. From: USA
