Rafael Nadal wins U.S. Open

The world's top-ranked tennis player now has a career Grand Slam.

Rafael Nadal defeated third-seeded Novak Djokovic in the men’s singles final of the U.S. Open in New York on Monday night, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2. The match ended almost six hours after it began. Rain interrupted the second set for about two hours.

The win gives the 24-year-old Spaniard his first U.S. Open title. He becomes the seventh man to win all four Grand Slam singles titles for his career, and he has nine Grand Slams overall.

Asked what it meant to finally conquer the U.S. Open, he said: “That’s more [than] what I dreamed.”

Nadal also saluted his opponent, saying Djokovic would win the event himself very soon.

Nadal just missed winning all four Grand Slam singles titles in one calendar year. He won 2010’s Wimbledon and French Open, but not this year’s Australian Open.

The men’s final initially was scheduled for Sunday, but rain moved the event to Monday.

WELL DONE RAFFA!! I believe that Nadal is the youngest to do it. What a beautiful blond, green eyes model type sister he has. When it comes to women Spain rocks too.

I'm getting tired of this Hispanic propaganda. Nadal is a bum. The Obama administration wants to give amnesty to all the Mexicans and he thinks that this will help. Enough already this is America.

Lupe Ray are you that dumb? What does MExicans have to do with Nadal. He comes from White europe Spain!!
Does Gasol also have anything to do with MExicans. Is a Jamaican or Denzel Washinton White or British cuz he speaks English?

      Poor USA education??

BTW Spain is also the reason we are in the Americas and that includes the USA.

Joyce yes you are right but remember the great FEd wasn beating nobodies before Rafa came around. What happened to Arod, Hewitt??
Also Rafa has a 17-7 winning record vs Fed. That is pretty impressive and the fact that Fed is lucky that he won the FO and SW19 on 2009 due to Nadal getting injured. ONLY 24!! WOW!! AMAZING!! Hope he stays healthy.

lupe Ray. Are you loopy lupe? Have you lost your ray of shine Ray? Or are you just lackluster? Are you trolling for threads to make sick comments? How long have you been this sick? Therapists comes in all colors and I am sure you could find someone who would help you with yourself. Your comment reveals a disturbance in you that is about you, not about the awesome, bright shining, incredible tennis star, Rafael Nadal. Of course, he will celebrate his accomplishment with or without your comment. Where is your humility lupe Ray? Nadal wears his humility well and has chosen to do something with his life. Now, go do something with yours for the better. No, he isn't Mexican, all brown people aren't Mexican. Mexicans are good people, Spaniards are too! In fact, a lot of non-Caucasians are good decent people, expand your life lupe Ray. I celebrate RAFA! What a great match they both played.

I just dont get it how in the world Pete Sampras ever call the GOAT when then guy NEVER won the FO or couldnt play at all on clay?
Here Nadal owns Federer by beating him on grass, clay and even some hc tournaments. Even the great Agassi didnt have a winning streak vs Sampras.

Rafa is AMAZING!! IF he was from the USA for sure he would be dating the hottest Hollywood starlet!

Pete did get to a semi-final of the French, and he won the Italian Open on slow red clay – he could play on it. He won probably the greatest Davis cup tie ever played, clinching it himself in an epic match on slow red clay as well. He didn't win the French, that's true...but that doesn't mean he couldn't play on clay.

what other roger record will he try to break – 5 consecutive wimbledon, 5 consecutive us open....so sad for roger, it feels like the changing of the guard. roger at 29, we can only probably see a few more years from him. but he elevated the sport into what it is now. i still think he is the best ever. let's not forget that even as we bask in this new era of rafa.

. . . and he did beat Rafa in a few finals before he got too good for him. Although his Roland Garros victory will always have a question mark over it, I still would have to agree that he is the GOAT. He can still win a few more majors, in my opinion.

Who, what? Didn't this tennis match start like 4 months ago... When they decided to host this match in New York, the conversation went like this.. (Leaked via Wikiphagleaks)

Hey Tennis brethren, I have a splendid notion. Lets host a tennis match, in the late summer, in the Cesspool known as New York. Yes, the weather is terrible, the fans even worse...but imagine all the extra air time we will receive because the tournament is extended so many times because of the plethora of dilemma's we will face by hosting a tournament in a cesspool...think of all the extra income due to increased advertising revenue!

Yes! Then lets do that, who cares that nobody will be watching or care when Monday Night Football dominates the ratings, for we are Tennis! Roar one, roar all..go go our fellow ball huggers, for tennis is the sport of phags and europeans.. Thank you, and good night all of our fellow tennis folk who tuned in, all 10 of you!

Ah, an American at his finest. Has anybody seen my vomit bag? I feel sorry that you have this mentality. Tennis is a great sport. Hey I was lucky enough to watch football over the weekend for about an hour, of which there was only about 6 minutes of actual playing time. Talk about the most boring, tedious, over-rated, brain-dead sport in the world. Oh, and snazzy padding too. Ever heard of rugby? No pads, constant play, real men playing that would destroy any American football player. Oh that's right... rugby isn't an American sport, so that means you probably hate it. Can't wait to get out of this country. 3 more months. Congrats Rafa, great champion.

I lost a lot of respect for Federer a couple of years ago – he cried uncontrollably after losing in matches.

This would be so much better if he had to beat Federer to do it. That would mean not only that he had won all four majors against the same opponent, but that (if I remember correctly) the same two men will have played each other in all four finals for the first time. Add that to the fact that Federer is the GOAT (for now) and you realize just how much was lost when Djokovic took him out in the semis.
