Report: U.S., Saudis close to largest arms deal ever

Boeing F-15 fighter jets like these would be a large part of the reported arms deal.

The United States may be on the verge of its largest arms sale ever, a package of aircraft and weapons systems for Saudi Arabia that could total $60 billion when the final bill is done, according to a report in Monday’s Wall Street Journal.

If completed, the deal could also generate more than 75,000 jobs, the Journal reported.

The Obama administration is expected to notify Congress of the planned sale this week, according to the Journal report. Production would take place over five to 10 years, the Journal said.

Key components of the sale would be Boeing F-15 fighter jets – as many as 84 new ones and the refurbishment of 70 others – and helicopters including 70 Apaches, 72 Black Hawks and three dozen Little Birds.

Discussions are also under way over naval and missile defense systems for the Saudis, the Journal reported.

Meanwhile, Boeing is a contender in another F-15 sale, this time to South Korea.

The Korea Times reported Monday that the Pentagon has approved a Boeing request to market a stealth version of the F-15, dubbed the Silent Eagle, to Seoul.

The Times points out, however, that Lockheed-Martin’s F-35 Lightning and the Eurofighter Typhoon may be stronger contenders to win a South Korean order for 60 fighter jets.

    Don't we ever learn?
We should not be selling or giving our weapons to anyone. In the end we usually end up fighting against our own weapons sooner or later, one way or another.

The amount of hatred growing between the public here in the US is astonishing. It is becoming harder and harder for many of us to be grateful when friends comes to help and in the process creating more enemies. This deal is nothing but a cover up by Saudi to give aid to the USA and generates 75,000 jobs. Saudi Arabia doesn’t need all these weapons especially if we keep in mind the fact that the population in Saudi Arabia is about 28 Millions out of that population 6 millions are perm resident foreigners (23% are foreigners). There is no way in hell that they have the manpower to handle such huge cash of weapons. In fact Saudi never fought a single war. If somebody knows of Saudi war, please enlighten me. Similar deals were done during the Clinton and Bush adminstrations.

We may disagree with Saudi Arabia on several issues, but one thing for sure; Saudi Arabia is the best US allies. Unlike Israel, which brings us a lot of grief and pay it in cash nonetheless for that and to sweeten the deal we give our cutting edge technology for free to Israel, the Saudi pay for every single “OVERPRICED outdated” item they buy from us. As for those hatred mongering morons out there, here is one simple fact; Al-Quada was an unfortunate US creation during the war against Russian in Afghanistan. Go pick up some history books and stop feeding on faux crab as the sole source for learning history.

What genius decided to sell military equipment to a failed dictatorship. The same ones that would sell their mothers and daughters to make a buck I expect. Who are the Saudis fighting? Do you really expect that the Saudis will join the USA in a fight against Iran? More likely the weapons will be used against Israel and US forces. STOP the sale of all weapons to Muslim countries except those that can only be used in a fight against terrorism. Helicopters would be good for that mission ... not top of the line fighter jets.

Why do we continue to do business with SA? They abuse, murder and deny the basic rights to people within their country. They are Islamic fundamentalists and they hate Americans. I can't believe this administration is selling them anything 'cause they are just selling our politicians a BS story or 'friendship'. I can't believe our leaders...they are without doubt some of the most greedy and gullible.

Calm down people! The Saudis just buy weapons from the US to help us our economy. Our economy keeps humming.. and they get to sell us oil. The weapons systems they buy from America always end up in warehouses unused. Why? They don't trust their own people to handle the weapons because of fears they'll be overthrown. Whenever they need a real army (see Houthi rebels, Kuwait invasion, etc.) they either rent a Pakistani battalion or 2 or call in the big guns – i.e. US Army. So calm the hell down and the Saudis for the added jobs!
