Report: U.S., Saudis close to largest arms deal ever

Boeing F-15 fighter jets like these would be a large part of the reported arms deal.

The United States may be on the verge of its largest arms sale ever, a package of aircraft and weapons systems for Saudi Arabia that could total $60 billion when the final bill is done, according to a report in Monday’s Wall Street Journal.

If completed, the deal could also generate more than 75,000 jobs, the Journal reported.

The Obama administration is expected to notify Congress of the planned sale this week, according to the Journal report. Production would take place over five to 10 years, the Journal said.

Key components of the sale would be Boeing F-15 fighter jets – as many as 84 new ones and the refurbishment of 70 others – and helicopters including 70 Apaches, 72 Black Hawks and three dozen Little Birds.

Discussions are also under way over naval and missile defense systems for the Saudis, the Journal reported.

Meanwhile, Boeing is a contender in another F-15 sale, this time to South Korea.

The Korea Times reported Monday that the Pentagon has approved a Boeing request to market a stealth version of the F-15, dubbed the Silent Eagle, to Seoul.

The Times points out, however, that Lockheed-Martin’s F-35 Lightning and the Eurofighter Typhoon may be stronger contenders to win a South Korean order for 60 fighter jets.

Money rule the work, if they were poor like Pakistan or Afghanistan we could be shred them into pieces but stop they are our friends and we know how take their petro money. So we will not attack and shut up Iran because then how we will scare them of ?. Lets keep this conflicts going as only thing we make good is bombs and weapons.

Why do the Saudis keep getting a pass from the USA? The Bush family was extremely tight with the King. So many people make such a big deal about Muslims and how evil every last one of them is, but Saudi Arabia is an Islamic theocratic monarchy. Hey, right-wing nuts....where is your outrage about this arms deal if you are so concerned about those devil Muslims?

do you remember the last huge arms deal? The one where America sent Afghanistan billions of dollars worth of Ammo to take out those pesky Russians! Then Bin Laden used them to make America look folish.

I say 10 years and Saudi will do the same to America.

I am a Jew and I have to be fair. Saudi Arabia has been and remains one of the strongest ally for us Since 1933. They are fighting al-Qaeda like us and they are the only ones who stood with us in this economic crisis unlike Israel.

I have to wonder, as high tech as these jets are, if we embed some sort of code in the electronics that would allow our fighters to send a signal and shut them down in the event they are ever used against us.

Don't think the Saudis are our friends. But, don't think we're going to sell them our best either. This sell will be good for us, good for the economy, and relations.

To the tune of $60 Billion, the United States can sell aircrafts and weapons to Saudi Arabia, the country where 19 out of the 20 9/11 hijackers originated from....But Muslims cannot have a peaceful place of worship 2 Blocks from the site of Ground Zero??? If this isn't hypocritical, I don't know what is.... Oh, and might I mention we attacked Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan looking for the Saudi Arabian born Bin Laden.....SMDH

Why are you all so negative? Stay at the facts Saudi Arabia is an ally of the Unites states for so many years.
Maybe its a good thing that they will get the arms deal! Its in our own interest to get a balance in the middle east.
Especially with Iran as neighbouring country and building its military power and technology!, you know this lovely peaceful loving country.

Saudi Arabia is maybe not the most democratic country in the world but hey the US is addicted to oil so congrats youve got common interest. And oh yeah the US can now work on its trade deficit with this arms deal!
