Report: U.S., Saudis close to largest arms deal ever

Boeing F-15 fighter jets like these would be a large part of the reported arms deal.

The United States may be on the verge of its largest arms sale ever, a package of aircraft and weapons systems for Saudi Arabia that could total $60 billion when the final bill is done, according to a report in Monday’s Wall Street Journal.

If completed, the deal could also generate more than 75,000 jobs, the Journal reported.

The Obama administration is expected to notify Congress of the planned sale this week, according to the Journal report. Production would take place over five to 10 years, the Journal said.

Key components of the sale would be Boeing F-15 fighter jets – as many as 84 new ones and the refurbishment of 70 others – and helicopters including 70 Apaches, 72 Black Hawks and three dozen Little Birds.

Discussions are also under way over naval and missile defense systems for the Saudis, the Journal reported.

Meanwhile, Boeing is a contender in another F-15 sale, this time to South Korea.

The Korea Times reported Monday that the Pentagon has approved a Boeing request to market a stealth version of the F-15, dubbed the Silent Eagle, to Seoul.

The Times points out, however, that Lockheed-Martin’s F-35 Lightning and the Eurofighter Typhoon may be stronger contenders to win a South Korean order for 60 fighter jets.

Without the Saudi's the US would be in banko protection right now. Just imagine that everything the Saudi's have is bought with interest generated from their money in US banks. THe deal that the US struck with Saudi was that the US would protect Saudi as long as it leaves all it's oil revenue in US banks but they can withdraw the interest. The Saudi King could write a cheque today only with interest it's generated and pay off the $13 trillion national debt. Can you see why they can't do anything to the Saudi's. They can openly flaunt they are not a free society...so just like every other dictator the Americans created something will come back and bite them in the end...just like Norieaga.....SAdam Hussein....The Shah.....Pinochet....and when stupid americas actually learns that their country has done to the rest of the world maybe then they would understand why so many hate us. It's not the fact we have so much....America is kinda like that relatives who drive around in a Mercededs...lives in a Mansion but is begging you and your $10/hr earning for gas money for their Benz and still refuses to give up their opulant lifestyle..just like most Americans....consumed by debt just like the country itself but eventually the credit card and banks says no more...and luckily China has so much invested that they can't cut and run...but most of you writing these comments and reading this is just simply to stupid so realize or even fathom this is the problem...like Bush casuing this recession with his BS while his Defense and Oil company firends get richer...haven't you idiots figured this out yet....this has happended in a cycle continually for over a century and they keep moving more cash from the lower and middle classes to the rich...my my you people are phucking stupid....plain and simple

I like where you're going with this. You make a lot of valid points that are true, you just need to clean it up a little bit and organize your thoughts in a clear manner. Also, using swear words and calling people idiots makes others ignore you.

Great, send them out dated weapons that have a chip implanted that reders them useless if they try to use them on us. Remember, we supplied Saddam and the Afan's with weapons 10-20 years before going to war with them. Our country has the most advanced weapons system on the planet. If the Saudi's tried to use them against us, their planes wouldn't get off the groud. It's the relentless gorilla war and politiacal iimpotence that is the biggest threat to this country.

    What a bunch of looser....

Here's the deal... The USA needs friends close to IRAN because if worst comes to worst, The US cannot send a nuclear bomb in IRAN because it would affect friendly neibour... So, sell enough weapon to their neibour, and then ask them to take care if IRAN themself... This way it won't look its the united state that attacked... And the muslinn world won't be more against the states...

You must think on the long run.

You really think the cold war is over... Sure, say that to all the dead people killed by spies this year in multiple countries...

hahahahahahaha are these commenters serious. Saudi arabia is an ally! YOU SELL WEAPONS TO ALLIES- especially when those allies neighbor your future enemy (iran)! if america is bold enough to invade a country that MIGHT have weapons of mass destruction, iraq, you best believe they'll invade that DOES have them (iran)!

They are only our allies because we thrive on their black gold. If it weren't for that the Saudis would have the same relationship with us that Iran does.

    A radical thought here:

I believe that the Saudis, the ruling family of which has only been educated in Western ways for the last 100 years, are our best hope. I believe that during the last 100 years they realized that the only way for their people to evolve would take radical reforms which cannot be forced overnight.

Just as the Catholic Church recognized the need for reform in the 1960s, so must the Saudis see the need for their culture to evolve. They are keepers of the two holiest cities in Islam and pretty much the capital of that religion, however the biggest investor in Muslim-hating Fox News is a Saudi prince. They may not be able to snap their fingers and turn Riyadh into the West Village because they'd face a tremendous uprising that would result in Iran 2.0.

I believe that, at the base of it, all our incursions into the Middle East during the last 20 years have been at the Saudis' behest, in an effort to wipe out radical elements outside their country, before helping them do the same in their own. Then, the most-oil-rich nation in the Middle East can slowly progress toward the same level of civilization as the West.

At least that's what I'm hoping is going on without our explicit knowledge. Roll it around in your heads for a while...I;m sure you've all heard crazier theories here.

republicans have brokered deals with the saudi's. George Bush Sr. was and still is very close to the Saudi Royal family. Also, remember during Reagan's administration arms were being distributed illegally.

is this going into my head correctly? We are selling arms, jets, ammunition, and probably nukes on the sly to the folks that will ultimately take out the US and Israel? Obama needs to be impeached for treason and a DEATH WISH toward his own country, just for another temporary CASH FIX...! If this is another cover-up used in place of bailout money, then someone needs to give a OBOZOA a golden parachute complete with FRAYED STRINGS attached!

you are severally uneducated, perhaps suffering from severe brain damage.... we are selling outdated weapons that our current weapons could obliterate without difficulty, and we have done this all over the world. Saudi Arabia is half way around the world, with no air craft carriers, they can not fly those F-15s to the US with out an aircraft carrier to take off of or planes to re-fuel them, they have neither, and would get shot down before they got even close... this is essentially our military having a garage sale to make room for all the better weapons we have. Take your misguided hatred of Obama and turn it on yourself, because obviously you are the cause of all your problems, you know, the ones that make you rant like a fool on the internet. Selling nukes to the Saudis?? Yeah, we give them out to everyone... cause thats the smartest thing to do... the Israelies are the only people we MIGHT have ever given them to, but they may have built there own, I don't really know, and there is no point in checking just to have an intellectual argument with an unarmed man... Reagan, Bush I, and Bush II have all done business with the Saudis. This is hardly Obama "hating his own country"

Believe it or not, the Saudis actually fear Iran influence more than Israel. The Saudis (Sunnis Muslims) would like to keep Iran at bay from being a big powerful Islamic Republic (Shiats). The US knows Israel is not strong enough to stop Iran. The Saudis actually has one of the biggest military in the gulf that is capable of pushing Iran in check. The Jordanias and the Syrians do not have the money/wealth to built a defense against the Iranian influence.

We sell the Saudis weapons today or end up fighting someone like Iran tomorrow for shutting down the flow of oil tomorrow.

All you idiots that say President Obama is wrong for selling arms to the Saudis, what about the "True Savior" Reagan and his arms sales? Read your history and get your facts straight, countries have always sold arms to other countries.

Besides we sold F-14's to Iran and after the coup they were all "broken" by some tech guys and to this day Iran is trying to get spare parts for planes they can't even fly.

How about we stop selling weapons to countries we will soon eventually goto war with. Its tough hearing about american soldiers being killed with american weapons we sold them. Kinda like Afghanistan.

F-15 is very old technology (even older than the F16 even though it has been constantly updated). You don't see that F-15 are being sold to Saudi in the 70's. F-15 will be out-performed by the latest generation of fighter designs in both west and east blocs so it does not matter that Saudi can buy more as this is the only way that trade deficit can be reduced by a tiny bit. AMEN.

I'm surprised the Israeli's haven't screamed about it. The F-15 may be dated by U.S. standards, but it will still CRUSH anything in that region and then some. The kill ratio of all F-15 battles in the Arabian area is about 130:0, counting Israeli fighters.
