Report: U.S., Saudis close to largest arms deal ever

Boeing F-15 fighter jets like these would be a large part of the reported arms deal.

The United States may be on the verge of its largest arms sale ever, a package of aircraft and weapons systems for Saudi Arabia that could total $60 billion when the final bill is done, according to a report in Monday’s Wall Street Journal.

If completed, the deal could also generate more than 75,000 jobs, the Journal reported.

The Obama administration is expected to notify Congress of the planned sale this week, according to the Journal report. Production would take place over five to 10 years, the Journal said.

Key components of the sale would be Boeing F-15 fighter jets – as many as 84 new ones and the refurbishment of 70 others – and helicopters including 70 Apaches, 72 Black Hawks and three dozen Little Birds.

Discussions are also under way over naval and missile defense systems for the Saudis, the Journal reported.

Meanwhile, Boeing is a contender in another F-15 sale, this time to South Korea.

The Korea Times reported Monday that the Pentagon has approved a Boeing request to market a stealth version of the F-15, dubbed the Silent Eagle, to Seoul.

The Times points out, however, that Lockheed-Martin’s F-35 Lightning and the Eurofighter Typhoon may be stronger contenders to win a South Korean order for 60 fighter jets.

Wasn't Timothy Mcveigh a terrorist and also an American? Because Osama was a Saudi doesn't make all Saudis terrorists. If you throw ALL Saudis in with insane terrorist extremists, then you are in essence saying the same thing about all Americans based on those types of comments. I can't believe I'm wasting my time to try and make a point. Every country has hoards of "Evil Doers" LOL

They are confuse and lost country. Many people in Saudi Arabia do NOT have anything to live and live in poverty level. In spite of using that money to improve their own nation living standard, they buy weapons. I guess, that is a good policy by US to make Saudi worry about their neighbors and balance their budget.

    What lost leadership.

Why Saudi Arabia needs so many weapons, and why US needs to supply them, while we know that all the major hijackers of 9/11 were Saudis? WHY?

Yes most of the hijackers were from S.Arabia but Bin Laden did that on purpose. Why? 1). S.Arabia kicked him out because he wants to turn it into a Theological Government. Not a Monarchy. 2). He was kicked out of S.Arabia and The King refused his groups help when Iraq invaded Kuwaitt. LEARN YOUR HISTORY!!

Supporting the farm the milks terror. The Saudi system is also about teaching Islam to school children all week long, that's why they become terrorists.. or financial supported of terrorists (for the war in afghanistan or Iraq or Madrassas in Pakistan or 9-11). This is it the Saudi System is what breeds the terror, and the US only rewards that system, Thank you America.

If The US doesn't sell, Russia will. So we'd better sell and make money. We also need to stop giving all of this to Israel for free.

Stop buying OIL FROM SAUDI ARABIA, they will have no money to buy weapons. This is crazy. The US can not produce its own energy? why not? No resources here, no Smart people here?

The saddest part about this whole thing is that america has done to them selfs by empowering middle eastern country by the purchase of billions of dollars in oil.Instead of using oil from our own reserves or for that matter change to a alternate fuel source, that would be better for our planet. That being said they would not have 60 billion dollars to buy weapons from anyone they could not fund terrorist training camps and most of all would not own lager businesses in America. Its time to change now
