Report: U.S., Saudis close to largest arms deal ever

Boeing F-15 fighter jets like these would be a large part of the reported arms deal.

The United States may be on the verge of its largest arms sale ever, a package of aircraft and weapons systems for Saudi Arabia that could total $60 billion when the final bill is done, according to a report in Monday’s Wall Street Journal.

If completed, the deal could also generate more than 75,000 jobs, the Journal reported.

The Obama administration is expected to notify Congress of the planned sale this week, according to the Journal report. Production would take place over five to 10 years, the Journal said.

Key components of the sale would be Boeing F-15 fighter jets – as many as 84 new ones and the refurbishment of 70 others – and helicopters including 70 Apaches, 72 Black Hawks and three dozen Little Birds.

Discussions are also under way over naval and missile defense systems for the Saudis, the Journal reported.

Meanwhile, Boeing is a contender in another F-15 sale, this time to South Korea.

The Korea Times reported Monday that the Pentagon has approved a Boeing request to market a stealth version of the F-15, dubbed the Silent Eagle, to Seoul.

The Times points out, however, that Lockheed-Martin’s F-35 Lightning and the Eurofighter Typhoon may be stronger contenders to win a South Korean order for 60 fighter jets.

The Bushes and the U.S have been in bed with the Saudi's for decades. 9/11 terrorists – Saudi. We learn nothing other than what side our bread is buttered, i mean, oiled on.

The saddest part about this whole thing is that america has done to them selfs by empowering middle eastern country by the purchase of billions of dollars in oil.Instead of using oil from our own reserves or for that matter change to a alternate fuel source, that would be better for our planet. That being said they would not have 60 billion dollars to buy weapons from anyone they could not fund terrorist training camps and most of all would not own lager businesses in America. Its time to change now.

Probably should send Bin Laden a few so it won't tee him off. Must been a Berkley graduate that decided on this.

I'm now convinced that Corruption caused 9-11. The love of money is the beginning of all evil. Selling weapons to the country that produces all the terrorists in the world.

So.... we arm our enemies when they are our allies (Saddam Hussein, anyone?) then wonder why they have the military backing to kick our asses when we invade their country the moment they are no longer in our best interest.

Does anyone else have a problem with this? And, if we have so much surplus military gear, can we FINALLY pull some of this money out of defense and put it into, I don’t know, education and healthcare?

The USA is, in all effect, the EXXON Valdez and our entire government is Capt. Hazelwood. Any bets on how it’ll all end?

    Voter smart. Vote Centrist.

The weapons being sold will generate jobs for Americans. We do not sell our highest technology. You can bet we have safeguards built in, in one form or another. Have faith in your government. It is critical right now. Trust the joint chiefs of staff. They are the closest thing we have to J.Edgar to ensure our safety.

After reading some of the most absurd, racist, and all out ignorant posts I have to pose this question...Where do you people get your information? S.A. has been our most trusted ally other than Jordan for half of a century now. Also, George W. conducted an arms deal with S.A. in 2008 that was worth 20 billion dollars. It is amazing how Fox News (partially owned by a Saudi Prince) has used fear and lies to distort plain truths about what is going on in the world, past and present. People do yourselves a favor and turn off Glen Beck and go do some actual research on the issues that you seem so concerned about.

The Saudi Education system, has students sit for religion almost their entire week. The life style there. The strictness. Have you even been to Saudi Arabia... If you grew up there... you will become a terrorist or a terrorist financial supporter. why because you are brain washed. Look at 9-11 look at afghanistan who fund Alqaeda in Afghanistan? who funds the madrasses in Pakistan? Who funds Hamas? Saudi People!!! why ? because they are brought up this way. Selling arms to this country will only make it have more control over other ME countries and spead its sharia there.

Alex, according to what you just said, anyone who is born and raised in Saudi Arabia will eventually become a terrorist...I don't know how to respond to a statement like that because it is so blatantly stupid. You cannot honestly believe that all 28 million residents of a country are terrorists/being trained to become terrorists. Also keep in mind that this was one of the few Arab countries that openly stopped all recognition of the Taliban after 9/11 and its government buildings have been targeted by Al Quieda ever since.

But then again maybe you are right and the Saudi government has a secret agenda to befriend us for 80 years only to attempt a war against the largest military in the world by funding the very same terrorist organization that has been attempting to over throw the monarchy for over a decade....

@Mike: My argument is multi-level. DO I think that all Saudis are terrorists? Absolutely not! Do I think Saudi Arabia is a haven for terrorist cells? Absolutely. Do I think some Saudis fund terrorists who intend to harm America? Yes sir! However, that’s not my primary argument against the sale of arms to another sovereign country.

It was our arms and aid which gave rise to leaders such as Osama bin Laden. Furthermore, it was America’s involvement through arms sales which led to the Al-Qaida attack of Sept. 11, 2001. In short, our eagerness to arm others always backfires as their enemies become our enemies. Secondly, just looking at the new F-15s that lay unused until they are auctioned off – that’s $8.4 billion that should have been directed towards education, employment, etc. The military spending is atrocious and yet we continue to pump most of our money into it as the rest of the nation rots. How is this even remotely sane?

Illiterate stupid Saudis. I feel for the ordinary citizens who have NO say !
America buys Saudi Oil. Saudis buy American weapons. The cycle provided job for both Saudis & Americans.

Americans then send all the money to Israel as AID (FREE MONEY) !

Millions of Americans & Arabs live in utter poverty, yet Israel gets FREE MONEY every years ! AIPAC rules the world.

We are selling them F-15's and Apaches folks. These are very outdated aircraft. Our military is already moving solely to the F-22, and has already declared that to be the last human-operated aircraft. So, I am not worried about this. No harm in selling a regional ally some technology that we have already improved upon.

No worries. Of course not. The F-15s and Apaches can't possibly do any damage to anyone. Right. Who cares about anyone in any of the neighbouring countries. As long as U.S. citizens are ok.

If we don't buy oil from the saudi who are we to buy from? at least we know them we probably own them by now. they do everthing to help us. You buy from the russian you think they will bank the cash in the US and just take the interest. Irag, where al our money is right now can't figure out to form a gov't for six months now .when you think they will get back to production to give us some of that oil so we pay back the chinese who we borrowed from at interest. Better yet you iragis why don't you send it right to the chinese and saves us time and effort.

So funny to read the comments here.....why sell to them? we will only be at war with them soon, this is irresponsible, etc etc.

Saudi Arabia has been the biggest arms customer for the US for decades. This deal is nothing new, its just the latest in a loooooong line of arms sales. Its not the first, and unlikely to be the last.

The F15s are inferior to what the US sell to Israel, they shoulf buy jets from Russia instedad, and only refurbish the existing jets.
