Report: U.S., Saudis close to largest arms deal ever

Boeing F-15 fighter jets like these would be a large part of the reported arms deal.

The United States may be on the verge of its largest arms sale ever, a package of aircraft and weapons systems for Saudi Arabia that could total $60 billion when the final bill is done, according to a report in Monday’s Wall Street Journal.

If completed, the deal could also generate more than 75,000 jobs, the Journal reported.

The Obama administration is expected to notify Congress of the planned sale this week, according to the Journal report. Production would take place over five to 10 years, the Journal said.

Key components of the sale would be Boeing F-15 fighter jets – as many as 84 new ones and the refurbishment of 70 others – and helicopters including 70 Apaches, 72 Black Hawks and three dozen Little Birds.

Discussions are also under way over naval and missile defense systems for the Saudis, the Journal reported.

Meanwhile, Boeing is a contender in another F-15 sale, this time to South Korea.

The Korea Times reported Monday that the Pentagon has approved a Boeing request to market a stealth version of the F-15, dubbed the Silent Eagle, to Seoul.

The Times points out, however, that Lockheed-Martin’s F-35 Lightning and the Eurofighter Typhoon may be stronger contenders to win a South Korean order for 60 fighter jets.

The Saudi government is friends with the USA, really? Which government is that, the monarchal or theocratic government of the USA? Saudi Arabia has two governments, a monarchy that pays for weapons etc. and a theocracy that teaches its citizen to hate and kill Americans, probably with the weapons the Americans sold their great "friend".

If you think Saudi Arabia is America's friend you really do not know much about Saudi Arabia. The monarchy appears to be on friendly terms with the US but the theocracy is nothing but hatred for the US and the theocracy is what shapes the minds and spirits of Saudi Arabians. Read some books about the KIngdom and you definitely won't think the same Saudi Arabia that produced the majority of the 9-11 hijackers as well as financed the 9-11 hijackers is America's friend anymore than Pakistan is, yes, the same Pakistan whose equivalent of the CIA, the Pakistani Inter Service Intelligence, aids Al Qaeda anyway Al Qaeda needs assistance.

Wonderful. This is how it always starts. We (the US) sells arms to foreign countries, then calls them a threat, then invades them and starts a war.

Saudi Arabia has a lot of religious nuts because it's a holy land, but the Kingdom has been very good to the US in regards to fighting terrorism in their country and keeping Iran in check. South Korea has been allied with US for 50 years.

I would be totally against selling weapons to a country like Venuzela who I know will be a future enemy but not Saudi. Better them be strong in the middle east then the US babysitting the region.

Sounds like some people here get their history from snippets rather than understanding the whole relationship that these countries have with the US.

I remember the 80s and Saddam was no friend but he was against the Iranians who were really dangerous back then. If you read the history now, it sounds like Saddam was taking orders from the US but that's not how it was at the time.

History can be twisted later but if you lived through the times, you realize a lot is misunderstood later and used as propaganda.
