Crossing guards needed for crabs

A crab crosses Provincial Highway 26 in Taiwan.

Help wanted: Crossing guards.

Job description: Escort female crabs across a busy highway during the peak of spawning season.

Think you’re the right person for the job? Apply to Kenting National Park in Taiwan. The park put out the word Thursday that it needs help protecting female land crabs as they migrate from inland areas to coastal spawning grounds. To get there, they need to cross Provincial Highway 26.

Crushed crustaceans are a common sight along the highway, so the park administration will close parts of it for three days this month and three days in October, the Taipei Times reported Thursday.

During other times, park administration is asking motorists to slow down and posting yield-to-the-crabs signs. Officials are also asking for volunteers to carry the creatures across the highway to the ocean.

Officials say there are more than 30 species of land crab in the park, making the park and its surrounding areas the richest habitat for land crabs in the world, according to the Taipei Times report.

I recall land crabs in South Florida coming into yards in clacking herds some fifty years back. Bobwhites whistled and piped from every tree. Ground doves and sand jays were common... they're virtually gone, now, and not because mean drivers ran over them or greedy hunters bagged too many. We scarified, paved over, plowed under, or drained everyplace they used to live. Is this just a case of a wolf devouring a screaming bunny? (and if hounds and hunting dogs are any guide, they don't: I've never seen a large canine kill small prey but with a single, neck-snapping toss) No, because we don't need to do this to live. It's bottom-linism: the same doctrine that holds that wounded veterans, old people, and others past profitability should quietly croak without indebting the nation. Neither a society, an ecology, nor a planet can exist like that for long.

That crab is so damn cute. It's like HAI GUYZ! Aw I wish we cared about our animals like this. Americans don't give a crap if they run about a mother crab. Or a mother anything for that matter.

How about people, as a general rule, quit being so damn arrogant and start living WITH the natural Earth instead of ON TOP of it like they think they're kings or something. These crabs didn't ask for this. They didn't ask for our humanoid evolution and stupidity and laziness. They are doing what they evolved to do – get to their spawning grounds. It's humans who are in the way of the crabs, not the other way around. Get it through your heads – they're not here for us! They were here millions of years before us and they'll be here long after we've destroyed ourselves. We have got to change the way we think about the living Earth. It's all around us and we treat it like our personal toy to abuse. We are not the be all, end all, people. We are ignorant, selfish and stupid, and we're trampling all over this Earth, overpopulating it, using all its last resources, torturing other living beings, simply because we can. WTH?
