Killer: Lennon's murder meant 'I would become somebody'

Mark David Chapman, left, and John Lennon.

The man who shot John Lennon told a parole board this week that he killed the star because he wanted "instant notoriety."

"I made a horrible decision to end another human being's life, for reasons of selfishness, and that was my decision at that time," Mark David Chapman said.

"I felt that by killing John Lennon I would become somebody, and instead of that I became a murderer and murderers are not somebodies."

Chapman said Lennon was at the top of his celebrity hit list which included Johnny Carson and Elizabeth Taylor. He's been in prison for 29 years. He was denied parole on Tuesday.

Whenever I think of John Lennon's untimely death at the age of 40, I think of all the magnificent music he would have written had he lived and feel bereft. When his assassin took his life he hurt not only John's family and friends, but all of us who reveled in his music.

At least he made it to 40. You wanna know who got taken too soon – Buddy Holly, that's who. He only made it to 22, and had he lived, we probably would never have heard of 'St. John'

There's a reason for the death penalty and Chapman is one of those reasons. Nuff said.

Give me a break... if this was any ordinary joe shmoe this guy would have been out long ago.. How is that VIP's are able to keep their assailants locked up waaaaaaay past their deserved incarceration.

Not saying what he did wasn't wrong, or that John Lennon was one of the greatest songwriters of all time, but let's face the facts... This guy has more than done his time, and from what I've seen and heard in interviews with Chapman, he's more than become aware of what he did and why it was wrong... B.S.. on Yoko saying he's still a threat to her or her family... . Give me a break!

How can you know how Yoko feels? She is afraid of him, she has stated it many times.

If he thinks he was crazy and selfish for going after Lennon just wait until he sees how many crazy and selfish Beatles fans are waiting to kill Bungalow Dave.

Beatle fans are lazy and incompetent. The only thing they're capable of killing are their own brain cells.

I want this clown to get out just as, I suspect, the same reason some of the other posters here want him to be paroled. They think, as I, they could ACTUALLY get away with it. They are keeping him there for his own protection.

  10. A valued reader

The key to keeping Chapman in prison is determining the nature of his marriage.
1, An enterprising journalist needs to photograph his wife's closets and drawers. Is there space for his stuff? If not, he's just a tax deduction. (worth about $400 a month) "Imagine" how many "tax men" Mr. Chapman will kill when he learns that.
    2. Another enterprising individual needs to determine if his wife has any tramp stamps. Comparing photos of her tattoos to any on record with the local police might identify her pimp or gang affiliation. How will he react if his conjugal visits are terminated?
Any information should be sent to the New York Board of Parole (available on Google)

I think Chapman should be paroled the minute John Lennon walks out of his grave.

I'm willing to forgive his trangressions for all that he gave to us...By the way his 1st wife and son forgave him many years ago so for all u fools on the hill who keep bringing it up...drop it. Many of the posters on here are disgusting, nasty and sick themselves to say if John did drugs(as every rock band and music artist did in the 60's and 70's,including Bob Dylan who turned The Beatles on to pot, Jimi Hendrix, and Janis Joplin died of drug overdoses!),and because John was emotionally messed up for most of his life, because of the traumas he had as a child and teen,he,the extremely talented singer song writer and musician, father of a 5 year old son and 17 year old son, loving husband of Yoko, like a son to his poor aunt Mimi who raised him as her own son from the time John was 5 and her younger sister Juila John's mother gave him away to be raised by her,and she had no children of her own and she was an old lady when this happened, and had to live to know it,deserved to be shot at close range(or any range!) by a crazy fan 4 times, right in front of the wife he loved very much and she loved him very much,as he was innocently walking to his home and after he even gave his killer an autograph just hours before?! And he has even admitted he wanted to kill other innocent celebrity people!
