Police: Washington woman admits acid attack was a hoax

Bethany Storro told police an African-American woman threw acid in her face.

A Washington woman who told police that a stranger threw acid in her face admitted Thursday that her injuries were self-inflicted, authorities said.

Bethany Storro, 28, told Vancouver Police that an African-American woman passed her on the street and threw a cup of caustic liquid in her face the evening of August 30. She was released from an Oregon hospital on September 5 after undergoing surgery for her injuries after the alleged attack.

But discrepancies emerged during the investigation, Vancouver Police Chief Clifford Cook said in a press conference Thursday.

"Ms. Storro admitted her injuries were self-inflicted and the attack itself had not occurred as she had previously reported," he said.

Storro had credited a pair of sunglasses that she bought shortly before the attack with saving her eyesight. But details such as those led police to question her version of the attack, said police Commander Marla Schuman.

"It was all the little things that didnt quite add up," Schuman said.

Storro is still being interviewed by detectives. Prosecutors will decide whether to charge her, Schuman said.

"She is extremely upset," Schuman said. "She is very remorseful. It got bigger than she expected."

Blaming this violent act on another person is not the real issue. This woman is not well; she didn't harm anyone but herself – she needs help not a host to ridicule her.

By blaming someone else she could have caused harm in other ways. What if someone who looked like the sketch of the suspect had been attacked? Apparently there was a copy-cat crime in AZ. And what about people who donated money to her? Don't assume she's the only victim.

Amazing that she accused an African-American woman. She has racial issues... on the top of all the others. I fell sad for her. She needs major help. In truth... this woman is a threat to society.

She has only confirmed what I, as a white male, have known for years. White women are nuts.

She took up police time from more serious crimes, and hospital space for those who truly needs it. I hope she finds help for her mental instability.

Officers should have wondered about it when she identified the assailant as an African American woman - sounds too made-up to me. And the acid is too evenly distributed on he face to be real attack. But what was she hoping for? A weepy television movie to be made about her? Money? Fame? DId she think the acid would just give her a deep peel? She will be scared for life. Even if the doctors can help her avoid surface scars, this woman will have uneven pigment on her face forever.

Charge her. Sure, she is definitely mentally deficient, but she must serve as an example. You don't have to throw her in jail, but she should be charged and given a criminal record if convicted.

About a week after this happened, another woman had acid thrown on her in Arizona. This woman's fake attack most likely inspired that real attack.

I'm very disappointed in, who I thought was a fellow believer. Her story of Jesus saving her eyesight by prompting her to buy sunglasses was inspiring. I even brought it up in my prayer group and we praised God for his faithfulness to this girl and we prayed for her healing.
It is so sad that someone would hurt herself for attention, then tells lies that hurt so many others.
She will still be in my prayers because she needs more help than we originally thought.

About 2 days after this nut job was supposedly doused with acid, someone here in Phoenix decided to copy the incident and threw acid in a woman's face. And now we find out the original crime never happened?

Like The_Dude said above: "Great she just ruined it for everyone who honestly gets doused with acid in their face. The next time someone says they were doused in the face with acid I will have a hard time believing that."

I think the Phoenix case was real... Maybe...

Unfortunately it is very real for the young women it happens to in the Middle East. I'm not hate-mongering, it does happen! A girl turns down a guy (which she would be expected to do anyway) and sometimes that is how he retaliates, to ruin her looks. Maybe that gave her the idea & she thought everyone would feel sorry for her.
