Police: Washington woman admits acid attack was a hoax

Bethany Storro told police an African-American woman threw acid in her face.

A Washington woman who told police that a stranger threw acid in her face admitted Thursday that her injuries were self-inflicted, authorities said.

Bethany Storro, 28, told Vancouver Police that an African-American woman passed her on the street and threw a cup of caustic liquid in her face the evening of August 30. She was released from an Oregon hospital on September 5 after undergoing surgery for her injuries after the alleged attack.

But discrepancies emerged during the investigation, Vancouver Police Chief Clifford Cook said in a press conference Thursday.

"Ms. Storro admitted her injuries were self-inflicted and the attack itself had not occurred as she had previously reported," he said.

Storro had credited a pair of sunglasses that she bought shortly before the attack with saving her eyesight. But details such as those led police to question her version of the attack, said police Commander Marla Schuman.

"It was all the little things that didnt quite add up," Schuman said.

Storro is still being interviewed by detectives. Prosecutors will decide whether to charge her, Schuman said.

"She is extremely upset," Schuman said. "She is very remorseful. It got bigger than she expected."

She should be charged with something. This was really uncalled for. It sends a horrible message to kids also especially if nothing I'd done about it. I wonder what her overall reason for doing this was, she sounds unstable.

I really do feel sorry for someone so troubled in their own life that they would do such a thing. What also makes me sad is that she used a "race" that was obviously outside her own to blame. We are one people, we work hard, we bust our tails to have a good life, we are still learning and need to keep learning but..BAM...someone this stupid gets noticed nationally and instead of moving forward – we give her attention and publicity she doesn't deserve.

I thought she did it 'to bring people to God'... which begs the question, how did she get that twisted logic going and are the 'christians' around her or who raised her as screwed up as she is? It seems to me, if she was trying to get people to 'know God', she has done the exact opposite. No one wants to get to know 'her god'. God doesn't want us to hurt ourselves or deface His creation. He doesn't want us to lie or deceive people or blame innocents for our wrong doing. He wants us to love ourselves and each other. How did she get it so wrong? Why are some people so mentally and spiritually screwed up? Was she listening to Benny Hinn and/or some other meglomaniac to get so screwed up? How can anyone get through to her that this did not bring 'glory to God'. I wonder if there is a psych drug that can get her back to anything close to reality. Spiritual delusions seem to be the most scary to me and produce the most violent and irrational actions. Can society screen for these deluded people before they get out on our streets?

Her original plan was to use acid to etch "O-B-A-M-A" into her forehead, but even with a newspaper and two mirrors she couldn't get the spelling right.

I totally called this! I knew it was fake as soon as she said it was an unknown person. Throwing acid on someone is a personal thing, it's not an act committed by a random stranger. Additionally, why do white women blame black men (now women, new trend?) for things that they do to themselves? Susan Smith, the runaway bride chick, oh, well, that's not entirely true, I think she blamed Mexican's. I sincerely hope they charge her for false reporting, causing a public disaster, tying up emergency services, and just for generally being stupid. Throw the book at her. She needs to serve jail time and then have her life ruined by having to pay pack HUGE fines. You know I'm serious because HUGE is in capital letters.

Trash like her is what perpetuates and spreads racism even further. WAKE UP, PEOPLE. We all have red blood, we are all nothing more than meat and bones under our skin, regardless of whatever color that skin is. Hating someone because of the color of their skin is the same as hating someone for being retarded: a person has no control over how they are born, and we are ALL THE SAME IN THE END.

I understand the urge to protect retarded people – but in this case the retarded person ended up in a hospital bed with a mutilated face. SCORE! Who are you, Sarah Palin?

The pieces don't fit. Could it be the assailant threatened the victim and she was forced to change her story? POLICE, look closer!
