'Draw Mohammed' cartoonist goes into hiding, paper says

Muslims burn an effigy of cartoonist Molly Norris in Karachi, Pakistan, on May 26.

A cartoonist for Seattle Weekly in Washington state is in hiding after she received death threats for mocking the Prophet Mohammed five months ago, the newspaper reported.

The alternative weekly’s editor in chief reported this week that artist Molly Norris is “going ghost” on the advice of FBI security specialists. She will be moving and changing her name, Mark Fefer wrote.

“You may have noticed that Molly Norris’ comic is not in the paper this week. That’s because there is no more Molly,” he said. “She is, in effect, being put into a witness-protection program – except, as she notes, without the government picking up the tab.”

Norris’ hasty exodus stems from an April controversy in which the creators of “South Park” saw their 201st episode censored over its inclusion of Mohammed as a character. Creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker received death threats because their 200th episode featured the Muslim prophet in a bear suit.

Norris dedicated her cartoon that week to Stone and Parker and attacked bloggers at Revolution Muslim, who she said made threats against the “South Park” masterminds. Couching the cartoon as a First Amendment protest, she accused the Comedy Central network of cooperating with terrorists for pulling the original episode.

(Revolution Muslim's organizers told CNN in April the blog post - which said Parker and Stone would "probably wind up like Theo Van Gogh," the Dutch filmmaker stabbed to death after releasing a film about the oppression of Islamic women - was a call to protest, not violence.)

Norris announced that May 20 would be “Everybody Draw Mohammed Day!” above a cartoon of a cherry, domino, handbag, cup of coffee, spool of thread and box of pasta arguing over who was the “REAL likeness of Mohammed.”

But by the time May 19 rolled around, Norris had been overwhelmed with the attention surrounding her tongue-in-cheek proclamation. Tens of thousands of people took to Facebook to lambaste her, similar numbers jumped to her defense and Pakistan blocked access to the social-networking site until the furor subsided, according to The Big Blog, a cultural offering from the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

“It's been horrible,” Norris told the blog, explaining she had lost seven pounds and spent previous weeks issuing apologies and talking with national media. “I'm just trying to breathe and get through it.”

The controversy didn’t pass after the fictional holiday. On July 11, The New York Daily News reported that Yemeni-American cleric Anwar al-Awlaki – who has been linked to the Fort Hood massacre and the botched May 1 bombing in Times Square – called for Norris’ assassination.

In the July issue of al Qaeda’s Inspire magazine, which included an article on how to “make a bomb in the kitchen of your mom” by the AQ Chef, al-Awlaki called for Norris and others to be executed for their “blasphemous caricatures.”

“The medicine prescribed by the Messenger of Allah is the execution of those involved,” The Daily News quoted al-Awlaki as writing.

The FBI told the newspaper the threat was serious and said it was working with the targeted individuals. On Wednesday, Seattle Weekly reported Norris had gone into hiding.

Fefer wrote that Norris likened the development to cancer: “It might be urgent and serious, it might go away and never return or it might pop up again when she least expects it.

“We’re hoping the religious bigots go into full and immediate remission, and we wish her the best.”

Maybe its not being sensitive to other cultures, however, Digger, in the US we have freedom of speech, the cartoonist had every right in the world to draw what she wants, we all do. What is unbelievable is that you expect Americans to be sensitive to other cultures yet its completely acceptable for other cultures to act however they wish toward the US.

So it's not ok for us to draw pictures of Mohammed but some dirt farmer in Afghanistan can behead an innocent person? Let's just cut off all funding to these backwards people, not allow them in our country and let them die off.

People need to get over themselves and their religious beliefs. And that includes the people in this conversation blasting Islam as a religion, because we are basically doing the same thing to the Islamic Community Center in New York. Take a step back and live a little. If you really want to stick it to Islam, print off flyers of Mohammed and put them everywhere in your city. Then, when everyone gets furious, print off some more. Rinse and repeat.

Amust the origional eason that muslims did not want images of mohammad was because they were afraid it would turn into idolitry. They thought the image would become more important than the message. over time the tradition has been twisted

There is no flexibility in the Islamic faith. This is very evident here. Our country is about interpretting a fath as we see fit (freedom). Any idea of this is squashed by Islam. It is time we force this religion to evolve. Where are the Lutheran, Episcopalian, Presbytirian, sects of Islam. Time to force the extremists inot the minority.

If an American Citizen must change their name and go into hiding on the advice of the FBI then we have lost the war.

The next thing they will want is for us to turn in our weapons and hand over the rest of our rights........It appears the FBI already has...... if it is unable or unwilling to protect this one US Citizen inside the USA.

      God help us all..........................

For one, we are talking about America. You can deny the Holocaust, you can say n*gger, etc. The reason you would draw a picture of the prophet of Islam is because you can. And if you are a person who would kill someone for that, who then has hate in their heart.

While I agree that Islam has not atiquately adapted over time they do have different sects(or denominatiions) much loke Christianity. Aside from the largest divide between Sunni and Shia there are smaller groups such as Kharijite and Sufi. The Quran does say that they should not be divided (it is a sin to be). This unity did not last long because Sunni and Shia splintered very early in Islamic history

For the last 1200+ years it has been a constant plundering and burning of other cultures by the Muslims. From the ancient libraries of Alexandria in Egypt, the Nalanda University, to the many magnificent temples in India to the most recent Bamiyan Buddhas in Afghanistan. Even today many countries in Middle east do not respect other cultures, the confiscate any religious literature, symbols and trash them. And now when they get their own medicine they reach violently. Is it what is called as civilized behaviour? Islam is acting like a bully. Eventually a bully gets what he gets when the effects of his bullying reaches a critical mass. Its going to happen sooner than you think.

I love how abuzzayd claims that anyone who mocks Mohammed is a hate-filled bigot, yet claims that violence in the name of Mohammed is okay because "people love him more than their own mothers." Violence IS NOT OKAY and I'm getting tired of liberals trying to make everyone overlook the violent, animalistic tendencies of offended Muslims by saying "only extremists act this way." When Americans exercising freedom of speech within their own country are encouraged to hide, I say enough is enough. Either learn to behave in a civil manner or perhaps you should be taught a lesson in manners you won't soon forget!

So let me get this straight: According to Muslims, building a Mosque near Ground Zero is not insensitive and is exercising their freedom of expression. However, a cartoon of Mohammed *is* insensitive and is not subject to the same rights to freedom of expression?

How about this: You go and build your Mosque and we get to put up giant billboards outside with cartoons of Mohammed and call it even?

People get knifed and shot in the US all the time for simply showing disrespect. Showing even the slightest disrespect to a gang banger can provoke a violent response. I once saw an ex-con pull a knife out at a part simply because he thought someone looked at him funny. Obviously Americans have every right to disrespect anyone they want, but if you disrespect the wrong person, don't be surprised if you find yourself in the hospital or dead. Would Ms. Norris intentionally disrespect a member of the Hells Angels or the Crips? Well, maybe she would, because she seems a bit short on common sense.

Middle Easterners cannot read at the 40-60 percent level. They also do not often have books. Islam should be treated with love even though their countries don't always love us back. WIN THEM OVER WITH LOVE! NO VIOLENCE OR HATE. still, we should protect these individuals' free speech...but it is getting tougher. Islamic leaders must be the immediate target if any kind of religious war breaks out...all Islamic exceptions. For if Islamic violence is the fault of Islamic leadership.

At least 99.99% of Muslims are not going to commit violence because someone insults Islam, yet racist idiots insist on condemning an entire religion based on a tiny fraction of its followers. There are millions of Muslims in the US. If even 0.01% were willing to kill someone for insulting Islam, people would be getting murdered every day. What I see on this board is a bunch of people overcome with fear that lack even an ounce of courage. Your hate is a product of your fear, and your complete lack of courage makes you irrationally fear those that mean you no harm. Every hater of Islam on this board is a complete coward, and this is immediately apparent to anyone with an ounce of courage when they read your posts.

It certainly is unbelievable that anyone in this day and age would want to kill someone over a freaking cartoon? Just proves even more that the middle east still exists in a mental stone age and Islam is not a religion of peace and tolerance as much as I would like to think it is. This would tend to prove otherwise again and again. If a religion is valid, nothing can harm it or take away from it. The only reason I can think a religious sect would react like this is that they are deathly afraid someone will be able to show them their religious beliefs are not strong enough to survive without killing everyone in the universe. That's my opinion.

They live among us they are Americans, they are Africans, they span the world. When we keep preaching hate we become no better then the outliers in any religion. So just think of that before you open your mouth and let hate and stupidity flow from your lips. I am a Christian, but Jesus was a Jew and Mohammed was orphan who grew up to unite a people. actually I, I am not even close to being a redneck. I am a pretty regular person who goes to work, pays her bills and raises her kids. I send my children to a quaker school and believe in peace. What I don't believe in is pandering to a religion that has more extremists in it than people who worship peacefully. We aren't talking about a handful of people here. We are talking about thousands who turn out and want to kill one person because of a stupid cartoon. There comes a point when a person has to look at the situation and say enough is enough. Islam is clearly NOT peaceful. Maybe you moderate muslims should start to police your side of the street and let these extremists know they are doing wrong. Oh wait, you can't, they will kill you too.

If we wonder why preachers from Florida want to burn Kuran's, this article is a good start. Why aren't law enforcement pursuing those who are putting out the death threats? Is inciting violence still against the law? For international cases, why isn't the CIA doing what the do best to mitigate threats? The issues surrounding the Southpark episode were sickening and to hear that another tongue in cheek author is receiving similar heat for her stance is wrong. We can not allow ourselves and our way of life to be bullied by radical fundamentalism. It harms Muslims in our country, creates anger and hostility, and perpetuates violence.

All religions are peaceful. Until you disagree with them.

Most Muslims are peaceful; but the "extremists" aren't simply a handful of people, but rather tens of thousands (to pull a number out of thin air). (Religious fervor) x (number of extremists) x (money) = a big problem for the rest of us.

He did not say to hide behind a rock and wait in ambuch for them whereever they are. Yes the Crusades were violent and executed by Christians but you'll be hard pressed to find cause for them in the Bible. Muslims cannot say the same about their book.

Ike- really? Christianity is the most violent religion in the world? Ok, let's assume you are speaking of the Bible and actions taken in the Old Testament (Because I know you are so well versed on the New testament-where "Christianity" really comes from- to know that no wars were ever instigated by Christians in the Bible after Christ came- right?), then you automatically know that not only do Christians adhere to that testament, but so do Jews, and Muslims even agree that the lineage of Abraham is part of their religion. So what you are referring to as "the most violent", is really a summation of all the major monotheistic religions alive today. Honestly- Islam was created by a fame seeking prophet that slaughtered twice as many Jews as Hitler's holocaust, and then received "divine" inspiration from Allah to create the Quaran, an virtual "instruction" booklet on maintaining the rightful act of "jihad" in order to condone killing non-believers. So who has the most violent religion? At least Christianity's fault does not lie in the doctrine itself- it lies where most religions problems do- in the interpretations of it's followers.
      Get your facts straight- seriously!

@Bamatree, no sir, you need to get your facts straight, there are several stories in the bible where God told his people to attack certain cities. Yes, that was in the old testament, but the old testament is still used to teach, so, don't fool yourself, chritianity is a very judgemental religion, even if it does murder anymore, or burn people at the stake anymore, it still alienates people and trods on them.

By the rules that Muslims claim for themselves, the Crusades were perfectly justified, and the excesses (though beneath Christian standards) pale in comparison with the historical treatment of conquered populations at the hands of Muslims.
      Here are some quick facts…
The first Crusade began in 1095… 460 years after the first Christian city was overrun by Muslim armies, 457 years after Jerusalem was conquered by Muslim armies, 453 years after Egypt was taken by Muslim armies, 443 after Muslims first plundered Italy, 427 years after Muslim armies first laid siege to the Christian capital of Constantinople, 380 years after Spain was conquered by Muslim armies, 363 years after France was first attacked by Muslim armies, 249 years after Rome itself was sacked by a Muslim army, and only after centuries of church burnings, killings, enslavement and forced conversions of Christians.
By the time the Crusades finally began, Muslim armies had conquered two-thirds of the Christian world.
Europe had been harassed by Muslims since the first few years following Muhammad's death. As early as 652, Muhammad's followers launched raids on the island of Sicily, waging a full-scale occupation 200 years later that lasted almost a century and was punctuated by massacres, such as that at the town of Castrogiovanni, in which 8,000 Christians were put to death. In 1084, ten years before the first crusade, Muslims staged another devastating Sicilian raid, burning churches in Reggio, enslaving monks and raping an abbey of nuns before carrying them into captivity.
In theory, the Crusades were provoked by the harassment of Christian pilgrims from Europe to the Holy Land, in which many were kidnapped, molested, forcibly converted to Islam or even killed. (Compare this to Islam's justification for slaughter on the basis of Muslims being denied access to the Meccan pilgrimage in Muhammad's time).
The Crusaders only invaded lands that were Christian. They never attacked Saudi Arabia or sacked Mecca as the Muslims had done (and continued doing) to Italy and Constantinople.
The period of Crusader "occupation" (of its own former land) was stretched over less than two centuries. The Muslim occupation is in its 1,372nd year.
The period of Crusader "aggression" compresses to about 20 years of actual military campaign, much of which was spent on organization and travel. (They were from 1098-1099, 1146-1148, 1188-1192, 1201-1204, 1218-1221, 1228-1229, and 1248-1250). By comparison, the Muslim Jihad against the island of Sicily alone lasted 75 grinding years.
Unlike Jihad, the Crusades were never justified on the basis of New Testament teachings. This is why they are an anomaly, the brief interruption of fourteen centuries of relentless Jihad against Christianity that began long before the Crusades and continued well after they were over.
The greatest crime of the Crusaders was the sacking of Jerusalem, in which 30,000 people were said to have been massacred. This number is dwarfed by the number of Jihad victims, from India to Constantinople and Narbonne, but Muslims have never apologized for their crimes and never will.
What is called 'sin and excess' by other religions, is what Islam refers to as the will of Allah.

I think some people should double check there facts. The Quran never says to kill all infidels. What it does say is if you are attacked to kill all of you attackers. As far as Muslem attacks on Europe these were done more for financal gain than religious expansion (much like the real reason for the Crusades). During Muslem expansion any Jews or Christians that were encountered were left in peace, if they did not fight back. They were allowed to keep there religion, they usually only had to pay a tax. They were not forced to convert unlike many Christian expansions.

Also, if you actually read up on your history, the sadistic muslim "extremists" began killing christian pilgrims, which gave that selfish numbskull of a pope an excuse to start the first crusade.

That's why tthey're mad, because it's a "f-ing hand drawn picture". Fundie Muslims believe that art (especially secular art) is sinful; the act of creating an image shows that you're tryng to compete with God. Back then, the only acceptable way for an artist to satisfy their creativity was through stylized calligraphy of verses from the Qu'ran. That's why there are absolutely no ancient middle-eastern works after Islam took over. Come to think of it, when was the last time you heard of a middle-eastern artist period?

Maybe that's why they're all so violent; their religion has little faith in the power of God and no tolerance for man-made beauty. Give those people some art classes, see if they calm down.

The "right" to mock a god? I don't recall ever asking for permission to do so. I don't recall any law getting passed saying I didn't have that right. I'll mock any and every god. They're all trouble.

Yes we do have that right. I am not compelled by any law to respect anyone's religion. Drawing mohammed doesn't violate anyone's rights. We are all free to worship (or not to) as we see fit. We are also free to speak as we choose. No one, on the other hand, is free to make death threats.

Wait..."THE nation of Christianity?" Hardly...the country was founded on the philosophy of "Enlightenment".
Stupid rules or laws should always be questioned, disputed and refuted.People should stop hiding behind religion and start thinking for themselves.

If you think I don't have a right to mock religion or anything else, then you utterly fail as an American.

Bottom line. The US government is afraid of the two percent that makes the other 98 percent look bad. That makes us a bunch of pu$$ies because government doesn't want Ali and Omar coming to blow us up, so they cave in and cower to the two percent fringe. Well here is a bit of news. The two percent don't care. They know we are a bunch of pu$$ies and unfortunately, until we refuse to back down from these terrorists we will forever be their fodder. Remember people, the biggest difference between us and them is we fear death, they embrace it.

You may fear death, but you don't speak for me. I'm not afraid to face my fears and die if I have to, 'cause everybody dies. Everybody. Nobody is getting out of life alive. Life is 100percent fatal. If they want some help with that, I'd be glad to help them for everyone's sake.

I am of course speaking in general terms as free Americans versus muslim extremists. So all you said was you would be willing to kill in the name of something, so that makes you no better then the extremists. I am not afraid to die personally, but as a society in general, we are and the extremists aren't.

Metallica you are an insult to every american soldier who has given his or her life fighting this 2 % you are talking about! "the 2% knows we are pu$$ies" Is that the same 2% percent who strap a bomb on themselves and blow up children, the same 2% who dress like woman and bury a bomb in the road not knowing who its going to kill then go hide in an oven breathing through a tube because they are too much of a pu$$y to stand and fight like a man! We have been in 2 country's for over 10 years fighting these 2% hero's of yours and you say until we show them we won't back down we will forever be their fodder............we

      @Metallica and @confused

I agree with Metallica in so far as he is referring to those who believe we must remain tolerant of their demands (I mean religion), unfortunately there is a percentage of those in this country (and plenty of them in political office) who cower from standing up FOR our rights and choose to bow to the "2% fringe". That said, thankfully there are still plenty with the backbone that this country was built with that are willing to go so far as wield a weapon and defend our rights and freedoms with their lives. Let us hope (screw that, PRAY) that we never run low on those who have the backbone and sense of values/honor that ARE willing to fight for what's right... we need more of them and less of those who are willing to lie down at the sight of a bully.

Thanks Ken. Obviously Confused missed my point. I realize and acknowledge what the military is doing. After all, I am retired AF and spent three tours in both Gulf wars.

  12. You bet I did

Yinka, do you believe that someone should be murdered in cold blood because they disrespect another's religion? Al Quaida disrespects our way of life every. single. day. This is America where nothing is too sacred to joke about. You don't like it? Go somewhere else.

I wonder what would happen if we built a memorial of our soldiers anywhere in the middle east. They would probably propose that it be moved or rather burn in down and kill everyone who acknowledges it. This religion isn't just ludcris it's dangerous and has no place in moder society.

  14. Tired of Muslim Double Standard!

All this “Walking on Egg Shells” as not to offend Islam is nonsense! If I go to Saudi Arabia, Iran or Syria and Yell from the rooftops: “I think the Buddha is great” I would not see the morning light but be tied up and sold in the market like a “Cow” This “We might hurt the Muslims Feelings” but Muslims can burn our Flag, pictures of our Leaders and Kill Cartoonists just trying to make us laugh! But it is OK for Muslims to jump up and down like Babies who don’t get their “Bottle” because they deserve “Special Treatment?” Muslims can decide what is “okay” or “not okay” but shame on the French if they like their women in Silk Lingerie instead of looking like the Grim Reaper or Darth Vader’s Mistress!

Nobody should have to change their name and go into hiding because of a lack of respect. Nobody should fear their lives because of a joke. This is nonsense.
