Hiker detained in Iran is back in U.S.

Sarah Shourd arrived in Washington, D.C., on Sunday.

[Updated at 7:33 p.m.] Sarah Shourd, the American hiker released from an Iranian prison, told reporters in New York on Sunday that doctors in Oman have assured her that she is "physically well."

Reading from a prepared statement, Shourd expressed thanks to Iranian government and religious leaders, including Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, for her release after 410 days.

"It is my deepest hope that the world will not let this humanitarian gesture ... go unrecognized," she said. "I believe this decision is a step in the right direction for all of us."

However, she and the mothers of the other two detained Americans, Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal, called for their release. The two men remain in Tehran's Evin Prison.

Shourd, who initially was taken to Oman after leaving Iran, arrived in the United States early Sunday at Washington Dulles International Airport on a flight from Dubai. She, her mother and Fattal's brother, Alex, then drove from Washington to New York to hold Sunday's news conference, appearing with Cindy Hickey, mother of Bauer, and Fattal's mother, Laura Fattal.

[Originial post] Sarah Shourd, the American released from Iran after more than a year in detention, arrived in the United States on Sunday, according to a spokesperson.

Samantha Topping, who has spoken to the media on the behalf of the families of Shourd and two other Americans held in Iran, said Shourd and her mother arrived at Dulles International Airport outside Washington, D.C.

Shourd was expected to arrive at New York's Kennedy International Airport and hold a news conference in New York City later Sunday. Topping said the New York news conference would proceed as planned, but offered no details on how Shourd would get there.

I am tired, very tired of reading these stupid idiotic comments after every CNN news report. My god people, grow up!!
Learn to have a little compassion for another human soul! You are truly beyond pathetic! You are better than that, please show a better side.!

These three young people went to check out a waterfall, they were never in Iranian territory. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard, crossed into Iraq and detained them. Were they stupid to do this? Absolutely. Was that worth 410 days in Evin bloody prison? God no! Her two friends are still there. Meanwhile Sarah, and her friends are being broken by there Iranian jailers. Put yourself in their position please! THEY WERE NEVER IN IRAN!

You are isolated alone, interrogated, perhaps torured, for days on end, no internet, no cellphone, no family. The Iranian jailers are working on you night and day shaping your thoughts. You or anyone else would be totally brainwashed. It will take a very long time for this girl to sort herself out.

It's very cruel to condemn her out of hand, in a knee jerk reaction. That is so cheap. It's beyond stupid to throw outcliches, and react like out of hand.

To JRS–I can appreciate your compassion for thier situation, but you cannot excuse the very actions that put them in this situation. We have to stop making excuses for these people, they have to start taking responsibility for themselves. They take risks at our expense, then cry for our help when things go wrong. Tired of hearing about it.

Ok JRS calm down. Some of these people may have over-reactive things they are saying. But they have the right to say it if they want. If you don't like the reactions so much don't read them. It's not like your reaction wasn't a little overly reactionary and judgmental as well. They may not have been in Iran, the Iranian guard may have crossed the border and grabbed them. Honesty I'm not even sure that accusation is even true. But heres the point. They are idiots to be in the area in the first place. It is obviously very far from safe and no one has to have any sympathy for them.

So, why does she warrant being set free and not the others? Apparently all it takes in these countries is a family that can afford to pay a large bribe.

When the trial will come out for the other two, I bet they will be found guilty on something, and that including her. Now, they will be sentence for at least 5 years in prison each. But Ms.Shourd is in the US, and obviously she will not go back to save her own mother if she the one that was the one in prison. So I assume that Iran will increase both hikers prison term to hers. They'll be there for a long time. That the scenario I see will be played by the Iranians. Her love to her fiancee will show in probably matter of weeks.

Sorry, I cannot get too teary-eyed and lose sleep over a bunch of bratty risk takers who get in trouble over there.
The average guy or girl would hike the Appalachia or the Rockies. Noooo, these elitists have to hike near the . . . Iranian border. And then we have to give something in return for the selfish acts of these loser, unemployed "travelers" on the dime of their parents and now the U.S.

Um, i am losing no sleep over these. There are enough Americans held captive and dying in Afghanistan and Iraq and Detroit and Omaha and El Paso.
Save your tears for the truly innocent victims and not bratty world traveler risktakers.
