1 dead, 2 wounded in Fort Bliss shooting

The FBI is on its way to Fort Bliss in west Texas to investigate a shooting at a convenience store on the base that left a man dead  and two women wounded, according to base spokesman Dieter Jester.

The man, who authorities say shot the females, was shot and killed by law enforcement officers on the base.

It's unclear what may have been the motive for the shooting or even if
the man or his victims are in the military or are civilians.

The police officers who killed the alleged gunman responded within three to four minutes because their offices are very near the base shopping area.

Fort Bliss is close to the Mexican border near El Paso, Texas, but straddles the Texas-New Mexico border. Most of the base is located in New Mexico, but the main headquarters is in Texas.

The base is home to the First Armored Division. President Barack Obama
visited there last month to meet the troops and mark the end of the official combat mission in Iraq.

Actually, a large portion of the base spills over into NM. I believe it's mostly used for training and that the inhabited bits are moslty or all in TX.

My info comes from my brother, who was stationed there. But it is readily visible on maps if I recall correctly

Truly they should shut the base down and move the soldiers. El Paso is the worst and ugliest place to live or raise a child. To many illegals running drugs and causing issues there. But I am sure we will just keep throwing money that way.

Wrong. A bulk of the base IS in New Mexico. It is mostly training area and land. But the main post and things are in El Paso.

The base is in Texas and its only minutes from the NM border. 99% of the training for the soldiers is done in NM. The Land for the training is owned by Fort Bliss there for Fort Bliss is both in El Paso, TX and NM. But I do agree that the place is ugly and I hate the the Army moved us here.

  4. AM1 only took CNN 4 hours to report on this one. Seems like they would have been on the spot with all the terror happening cross border.

Actually Sherry the base extends all the way to White Sands Missile Range. Dona Ana Range and McGregor range, both in New Mexico are part of Fort Bliss.

Im stationed at Fort Bliss and work a few blocks from the shoppette. I'm glad I didn't stop by for a soda today. You would think security on base would be a bit more stringent in a post 9-11 world. As a resident of Fort Bliss it concerns me to think that my wife and children are not safe on a military installation. To my understanding this is not the first incident of this type at this same location. At least in Iraq it was a bit easier to tell who the enemy was.

Actually he is right. A majority of the base is located in New Mexico, but remember it is the training area. The main part of the base is in El Paso. Personally I think the base needs to be shut down. To much illegal activity around there and El Paso is a waste of a city for anyone who does not even speak Spanish. And it has to be one of the ugliest cities I have seen. Even uglier than areas of Iraq. Except most of Iraq is less violent and corrupt

Army of One...part of your comment is very ignorant. Just because you don't speak spanish doesn't mean this City is a waste. Learn to speak, read and understand spanish and it won't be a waste for you. What if you were stationed in Germany or Alaska, would you say it's a waste because you don't speak German or Yupik? If you don't like to be moved around different bases of the ARMY, then look for a way to sign off the ARMY or you shouldn't have enlisted anyways. If you're going to serve this Nation, do it from your heart. By the way: I'm not Mexican but learn your history, Texas was property of Mexico in the first place. So get used to the Hispanic language. God bless you, have a great night!!

I currently live in El Paso. Fort Bliss does extend into New Mexico. That is a fact. As far as not being able to speak the Spanish, I understand that certain areas of the country it is important to embrace the culture and try to find a balance. I have lived on the east coast, we have been stationed in Alaska for three years and most recently moved here to El Paso two years ago. It is one of the most safest cities in the United States, but that is only because of government security and the location of one of the largest Army posts in the world. I hate to admit it, but the first thing that came to my mind when my husband received the call to locate all of his soldiers because there was a shooting was that another soldier had opened fire. I didn't come to that conclusion because it is a Army post, anyone who has any knowledge of the military knows that civilians are just as numerous on a post or base as active duty military. I have seen so many men and women come home from overseas that are scarred, depressed and most of all scared of the real world. There are thousands of soldiers who need help and maxing them out on anti-anxiety meds and feeding them Ambien is not going to do the trick. The government has turned their backs on the men and women who come home and need help that isn't considered "emergent"! The therapists and psychologists are overwhelmed and over payed because our soldiers are not getting the care that is needed. They are either afraid to lose their benefits or lose promotion statuses and many don't report symptoms of PTSD. They can't choose their own therapist depending on their needs, the government mass enrollls the patients just like they are herding cattle. It is wrong, and these soldiers don't think they can help themselves. They take these extremely addictive drugs and suffer from the side affects while the world around them continues to unravel. They don't forget the horrific things they witnessed, they go about their days in a drug induced coma until they fall asleep and have nightmares about what they went through. When their monthly appointment with their government appointed Therapist arrives he or she describes the nightmares in the ten minutes they are provided with because of over scheduling, the the "therapist" decides that that soldier could benefit from a super addictive sleep aid called Ambien. These so called "doctors" are taking these men and women and prescribing them the maximum dose of serious drugs......many of them have never taken anything more than an Advil for a headache.

The reality is anyone can bring a weapon on any military installation and shoot someone if they wanted. Do you expect the gate guards to strip search every person and vehicle entering post? That is unrealistic as it'd take a very long time. This is just an unpreventable, but unfortunate incident.

All you need to get on Fort Bliss if you are military is a valid military ID, you don't even need Decal stickers anymore. For civilians all you need is proof of insurance and that is it. They sometimes check your car randomly but they only check your car and not the person.

1st people are INJURED OR DEAD! It is sad to know as a military wife that these things aren't as uncommon as people would like to think. 2nd google maps shows the base in both states as does the government if in doubt ask your CO. Seriously.
