I feel for her, she's mentally ill and needs help. These charges seem too harsh for this young lady.

What charge would you expect for her? Theft seems pretty easy on her. Does the insanity plea apply in these cases? I've never heard of it other than on TV murder cases.

Too harsh, really??? She mutilates herself in order to get attention and then takes money from people who show compassion on her. She should be charged with a lot more--AFTER her psych exam

Are you kidding? So if they do nothing, then every person who pulls a stunt like this and wastes 10s of thousands of dollars of taxpayer money will just claim mental issues.

uhhh yeah because normal, sane people do that.
clearly there is something very wrong with her and it IS too harsh.

AmandaB, you have got to be kidding me. She blamed a group of people who are and have always been an easy target for blame (sometimes with reason). I don't care what her mental state, if it is bad then good she can go get help, but right after she can get a real sentence which I hope means a stint working with inner city kids and getting to know the people she has tried to demonize. TLynn – I agree about the fear factor, but to use terrorism so much weakens the meaning.

John - exactly how many people are you expecting will throw acid in their own faces - or otherwise mutilate themselves - in order to rip off Good Samaritans? I don't think that compassion shown to this woman will result in a lot of copy cats.

Too harsh? Police are out searching for some imaginary black woman while people are panicked that someone's out on the streets randomly throwing acid at innocent victims. She was wasting resources that could have stopped real crimes. I really do hope she gets the help she needs, but she deserves punishment.

WOW What do you think she deserves? I mean now a days everyone has some kind of mental issue, problem, or something that needs medication etc.

They should make her bob for apples stuck at the bottom of a acid barrel

Yes and no. One of the faults of our justice system is that the police don't have it in their power to force someone to receive mental services. A lot of the people that are in jail are minor offenders with mental illnesses that can't keep themselves out of trouble due to their disabilities. I'm sure that quite a number of them wouldn't have ended up in jail if the police or prosecutors had the ability to force them into a hospital. The main problem with allowing them this authority is the potential for abuse a lack of due process.
Frankly, if we'd just make mental illness criminal then only criminals would be mentally ill. :-p

There are always women who are unable to hold another woman accountable for her megative actions but yet want equality for all things positive. Equality is a two way street missy.

Thoughts like this are why people are able to commit multiple crimes before someone actually does anything about it. Send her to prison and let her spend 5 – 10 thinking about what she did. She can get therapy in there.

This woman obvisouly needs mental help, as well as criminal charges. I'm surprised she wasn't hit with mischeif for trying to send police on a wild goose chase after a non existant black woman, randomly attacking "pretty girl"s with acid. Just because you're a mental doesnt mean you dont know what's right or wrong. Lock her up in a mental ward.

Are you serious? A little harsh? Did you just want to slap her wrist and tell her not to do it again? People like her deserves a long jail time! She collected lots of money from people and she hurt a lot of people!

Look at all these people... crying out for blood as usual. Holier than thou, as usual. Well, I for one agree with this poster. I think having her return the money, and given the fact that her face is scarred for life, not to mention that she's been publicly humiliated... well that is punishment enough. She needs help.

She should be charged with something but NOT theft. It's not the definition of theft therefore more taxpayer money is lost in this fiasco.

That's a person who is better off with psychological help, rather than a jail cell and more problems. There's obviously something very wrong with her in the head. But, in an increasingly police state in a country that jails more people than anyone else in the world, good luck with common sense.

I think this young lady needs a dose of grow up and face the consequences. If her own parents were unaware of her "mental issues", chances are that they are not PERMANENT mental issues and it is something that is fleeting, such as the feeling of insecurity one gets when they are 1) newly divorced, and 2) newly relocated from out of state. She also has partial hearing loss (unrelated to her self-mutilation). So I imagine she was feeling very insecure right about then and decided to get some attention.

I feel that she should be charged for a hate crime, for targeting a group people, Black. I’ am so sick of people blaming their ignorance on Black people. I feel that if there was a penalty for doing this to any group of people they may think twice. Also it boarder on terrorist conduct, because it creates fear.
