Vatican Bank investigated over money laundering allegations

Italian authorities are investigating the Vatican Bank over possible violations of money laundering regulations, the Bank of Italy told CNN Tuesday.

Another Italian bank alerted Bank of Italy investigators to two Vatican Bank transactions that did not appear to comply with anti-money laundering requirements, the Bank of Italy said.

When Bank of Italy investigators told legal authorities about the transactions, they were told that judicial authorities were already investigating the Vatican Bank, the Bank of Italy said.

The Vatican said Tuesday it is "perplexed and baffled" by the public prosecutor's actions, and that the Holy See aims for "complete transparency" in its financial operations.

I'm proud to be a Catholic in spite of all the bumps and thumps the Vatican gets. No road is easy – but Catholicism sticks to it's traditions and faith no matter what. If anything, they need to do an Assessment and be more thorough in the acceptance of young men who want to be priests. The Church doesn't make them molesters, they were that way when they came in. I think they get these "bad apples" because of the priest shortage and they aren't screening thoroughly enough The Vatican needs to "tighten-up" on the incoming and get help for those priests who have made seriious mistakes.

      Happy,
The article is about money laundering at the highest level, not about sick priests in local parishes. I repeat, "HIGHEST LEVEL"... I challenge you to defend the Vatican treasurer for what he did, and I challenge you to defend the Pope for knowing about it.

Before anyone starts ripping the Vatican church, the CHAIRMAN is being investigated. There's a difference.

Eric, maybe you should do some fact checking before spewing such hate! If you check the facts, there is more child molesting and rap cases in evangelical churches than catholic. Its just there are so many denominations that they are not heard all at once. Really, go find out for yourself. It is an awful thing and all denominations need to do more to make sure this does not continue. Going to church, any church, does not make you a christian no more than being at the airport makes you an airplane. There are bad people and terrible things in all denominations. God cannot be happy with the ways of his people and decisions they are making these days.

The Vatican has billions in Gold. Look at the history of Popes who where mudered due to greed. Most Catholics ( its people) are God fearing people who love Christ! God is the Judge and will deal with Popes who hoard the Churches/ peoples money and do not put it to use properly as Jesus said, feed the poor, clothe the naked, the lease you did unto them you did it to ME!! Read your Bible, the Word of God and you will find exactly what God comands us to do. Give to Charities that do good for others or yourself feed the poor and dress the homeless. The Vatican has done nothing to address those issues. They talk about it like Politicians but do nothing. I speak about the Vatican and not the Cathoic people who give!

The Church has hit new lows and molesting children and money laundering. Then they still want your faith. They're getting as bad as our Treasury Department and Wall Street. They molested us: the american tax payer and then laundered the money with the old bailout and bonus strategy.

@Lefty Avenger - I'm pretty sure money laundering isn't a 'new low,' when compared to the molestation.

Kind of a stupid statement there Ralph. Ignorance and stupidity as well as natural events are the primary causes of most conflict in the world. Religion is simply a tool used to come to terms with reality. Sometimes it works and sometimes it does not.

Gorilla, you really do not think all the things you listed would not manifest themselves in society without religion? Highly naive. Religion is more often than not used as an excuse for violence and hate. It isn't the actual cause. Power usually is the cause. Think about the Crusades. It wasn't religion that was to blame. That was merely the justification. It was the search for wealth and fortune to promote one's own agenda.

That isn't to say religion doesn't spawn hatred and violence in and of itself. We have the current War on Terrorism as proof of this. However, the largest conflicts in the world can be traced to the desire for land and money in the name of religion. Think Manifest Destiny, if you will. If religion did not exist then you and I would most likely be debating on whatever other excuse had been used instead.
