Bishop Long: Charges against me are false

In a statement read on a radio show Thursday, Atlanta pastor Eddie Long said he was anxious to respond to allegations contained in lawsuits that he had coerced young church members into sex, but his lawyers would not permit him.

"I have been through storms and my faith has always sustained me," Long said in a statement read by attorney Craig Gillen. "... Let me be clear: the charges against me and New Birth are false. I have devoted my life to helping others, and these false allegations hurt me deeply, but my faith is strong and the truth will emerge."

Long said he denies "each and every one of these ugly charges" and will respond to his congregation on Sunday.

This is not the first time a clergyman have been charged with commiting an immoral act. Usually as more accusers come forward confessions from the accused comes forward as well. There must be more oversight for clergyman of all denominations. Finances, personal, and church ministries must be put under a microscope as well as all of the church's spiritual leaders examined. This is not a random or icelated act but it is the " don't asks and don't tell" within christendom where bragging rights are given to the ones who gets away the longest.

Really? Why is it ok to protect Wolves? Is it ok for priest to prey on children?
Where are we on the moral scale? Is it just want ever I want, I do. No regard for others.
It is upsetting to read the lack of concern for others.

I don't know if the accusations or true, but its a shame how negative media travels so fast. You never here the media broadcasting anything about all the positive things the Bishop Long or any other clergyman has done in the community, but just like the previous comments, everyone is so quick and anxious to scream, GUILTY before all the facts come out. Hmmm, this sounds familiar. They did JESUS the same way! Let God be the judge, NOT US!

Erick, Mr. Long is no Jesus. And what about Jesus since you mentioned it. The life of Jesus was one of a pauper where he spent his life then forsaken by many for the sake of the gospel. This isn't about the gospel but of how a very well spoken individual can manipulate the message of good news into fine cars and worldly living. The church should not be a business model but a true example of Christ that the community as a whole can grow not just a few.

Thank you Eric! New Birth and the Long Family do so much for the schools and community in GA and around the world. Why does this never make CNN? I'm in my third year of law school, and I'm pretty sure they taught us early on-innocent until proven guilty, so a lot of folks need to slow down with the accusations of guilt.

Hello Karrah, your bluff was well taken however you need to finish law school to be taken more serious. Are you saying that giving to the community outweighs social responsibility? Giving out money with one hand and throwing a rock with the other at most confuses. The rock outweighs the giving especially if the church receives benefits in return.

I think what Karrah is saying is that she has learned that accusations without credible evidence are just that...accusations. However, there are some who have already rendered him guilty simply because he has been accused. There is nothing to prevent someone from falsely accusing another. We have no reason to believe these allegations are true.

Hello iamloved, you are correct in saying that a jury & judge has not presided over the case to make a decision. For most, this shows justice based on the outcome. However a pastor should be held to a higher standard based on the confession of his faith, the duties required of the position, and the trust that others have placed in the position. Don't continue to play the public for a fool. Based on past results of churches under this cloud about 50% of the members leave in the first year alone and the remaining members never truly overcome the travesty of its history.

Erick, Jesus came to die for our sins. ANY Man of the cloth (Bishop, Priest, Apostle, etc) are supposeto guide us according to God's Will . They Areb Called by God to lead His People; not HARM them. So, dont compare this incident to the crucifixion of our Lord and Savior.

Erick, I could not have said it better. I have a 101yr old grandmother who constantly reminds all of her grandchildren that GOD can take care of people far better than we ever could. It is just a shame that we as people find it so hard to be happy for the blessings of each other. We all have to realize that GOD has different blessing for each of us.

He claim that these are "false" allegations is probably very technical in a sense. He may have indeed engaged in these acts but did not "coerce" the plaintiffs. Given this stance he technically can make a statement like that. Furthermore, the "anxious to respond" was all to decisive as well. Anyone with good public relation skills knows that the sooner you address things of this nature the more credible you appear (as we saw with Tiger Woods, etc). All I can say is the pics that he sent look suspect, no Pastor or professional of any sort would send images like that to parishioners or subordinates w/o their being some level of trust or intimacy. BUT innocent until proven guilty (on earth, that is).

While living on this planet called earth, man has truly offended a HOLY, LOVING, JUST and Righteous God who has gave the ultimate sacrifice to insure our preservation for eternity. We have insulted Our Creator with our pretentious conversations, our self-serving board meetings and bureaucratic verbage, with our self-righteous efforts to seek Him and our pitiful giving and sharing of all that He has created for our maintenance, sustenance and enjoyment. Since the beginning we have been unable and unwilling to personally accept any responsonsibility for our poor, miserable condition and have blatently refused to come forward, confess our sins and repent. God has decided it is time now, for us to either adjust our thinking or to pay the price for our ungodly decisions. We say, we have done nothing. In Isaiah 59, for example, God clearly states His case against us. He does not admonish us about the pastor's aide committee cancelling the bake sale on Saturday at the last minute because no one wanted to work. There is a far deeper cry from the heart of God than we really care to hear, again. Our Savior was killed by all of us, every single saved and unconverted individual on the planet earth had a hammer and a nail in His hand and stood on Calvary's Cross and murdered the Son of God. We asssassinate him everyday in our churches whenwe cut and torment the heirs of Christ with issues that do not pertain to the Doctrine of Salvation, the Healing Ministry of the Holy Spirit or the Process of Transformation, our Translation from beast to the nobility of stature and countenance of Jesus Christ in the natural and the spiritual that are only learned by being governed, counseled, taught, mentored and tutored to walk in the Spirit. People are on standing room only in many churches and have never been touched by the Spirit of the Living God. Publicly appearing Strong and annoited, but privately struggling. People have learned to talk the talk but living nothing. Many standing in the pulpits around the world will never experience a real move of God in their churches or their homes until they push harder into the spirit realm for the annointing that will break through their tedious traditions and seek whole-heartedly a new, deeper revelation about Christ's Project, THE CHURCH. The reconciliation of people to God, Our Father. In the Bible, The Word of God, God has continually asked us, prodded us, coaxed us and outright tried bribing us to do the right thing and live a superior lifestyle of holinesswith Him that will allow His chosen to walk in the blessings of the righteous, instead of the treachery of the pleasures of sin for a season. He has brought forth a myriad of messages that literally beg His people to confess our sins and repent, to come before Him as humbly as we are able, to pray, to seek His face and turn from our wicked, hateful ways. Isn't it interesting that we all believe that we did that already? We must ask the Lord to reveal us to us, confess our sins and repent to the Lord that our unwillingness to change our ways is not out of ignorance, but out of rejection to the true will of God. This means that every bought child of God would have to start all over again and hit the hedges and highways and make the changes that we need to make in our lives to accomodate those that we bring in. We will have to leave our comfy little coners and our taped messages and our little classrooms where we are taught how to say it just right and reteach ourselves the BOOK of Acts. Humbling ourselves before Him for the purification and sancctification of our souls to be ready to receive Him will net us the holy instructions and directions that we need to personally and corporately see the Body of Christ arise from the dust. The populus of Christians attend church on Sunday morning and have no idea what it really means to be set apart to a Holy God. There is no way to escape ,evangelism is our primary call. We all, (no matter how grand, righteous and pompous we have become) owe God some real kneeling time on the behalf of the unconverted, those who are truly ignorantof the devil's devices. It is time for us to make a sacrifice and make more of a sincere effort to seek God to find out how we can personally do more to enhanceand increase the spiritual and natural condition of the lives of the unconverted and the unheard. I don't if any of you are going through what feels like hell at the moment but I serve a True God. There isn't anything my God can't do. Read Isaiah 59:16 "And He saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no intercessor: therefore his arm brought salvation unto Him; and his righteousness, it sustained Him
The Bible is clearly fulfilling the word. We as christians really need to examine ourselves....we make Pastors, Bishops ect. into Gods. They are still of the flesh.....What's bad, most don't have a personal relationship with GOD.....People are being brain washed and we make excuses for these leaders because they preach well or sound they Holy. We are living in a time that we all need God. I pray that this Bishop really seek God and repent. Many are called but FEW are choosen!!!

GOD, Bishop Eddie Long and those three accusers know if this story is true...if it is...Lord have mercy on them all..if it is not, what reason would three young men have for making accusations of this sort...and why did it take three years...if this is in fact true, did something go wrong that caused them to come forward?

You all should just sit back and wait before you judge. None of us have that power. I'm not sure if its true or false, but I do know that we all should be careful with how we state our opinions. Matthew 7: 1-5 states...1 “Judge not, that you be not judged. 2 For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you. 3 And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye? 4 Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me remove the speck from your eye’; and look, a plank is in your own eye? 5 Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye

Faith, you are missing the point. It is not about Mr. Long but its about the office of the clergy. This is not an icelated event but business as usual. Somehow the ability to persuade sinners to Christ has lead to brainwashing, deception, and other unethical conduct for many in this capacity.

@ Faith, you know what kills me about Christians, especially baptist, they take one epistles in one book and feel like they have justify their point, not knowing it's more to the story(epistles) that what you read read 6-7 verses before and 7-8 after, and that will tell you what he was actually saying at the time and why he said what he sad.....

Very serious accusations. The accusers must have known how the media would eat this up and affect public opinion so I would think they have solid evidence to back up this claim. Time will tell...

Of course they knew the media would eat this up which is why they want a jury trial. its a horrible attempt to convince him to settle rather than suffer a lengthy trial and damage to his reputation. its a clever lawyer trick. Leak the story; inflame the jury pool; request a jury trial and hope the defendant settles to make you go away. Oldest lawyer trick in the book and if a person didn't have as much to lose by settling as Bishop does, then it might work. I wouldn't be surprised if this never makes it beyond the initial judicial review.

It is very unfortunate. I am more concerned with the impact it has on the Body of Christ. Many are not able to separate Bishop Long with Jesus. Jesus is blameless, however, those who follow Jesus are not. As I said, it is unfortunate, but my faith has and will always been in Jesus and not in a man or the vessel He chooses to use. Man will always fail you, but God will never fail.

How many of you remember the case of Tawana Brawley and Reverend Al Sharpton? What a liar she was, but...we all believed her until the proof...look at the woman who just threw acid on herself and said a "black woman" did it...
oh well...the "truth" will come out. Lets just hope that the Pastor's numbers don't grow as large as Tiger's list...
