iPhone app tracks settlement activity in Israel

Facts on the Ground uses various filters to display settlement activity in Israel.

Want to track settlement activity in the West Bank, Gaza or Golan Heights? There's an app for that.

Facts on the Ground is a free iPhone application that lets users track settlements in territory acquired by Israel in the 1967 Six Day War, according to the group behind it, Americans for Peace Now.

The map is organized in layers that show different kinds of data collected by the group, which describes itself as a "non-partisan" Zionist organization "working to achieve a comprehensive political settlement to the Arab-Israeli conflict."

By selecting a particular settlement, like Bracha, on the map, information such as date of establishment (1983) and settlement type (ideological) appear in a pop-up blurb alongside other data. Users can also click on a series of layers and overlays to display borders, Israeli municipal jurisdictions and Palestinian residential areas.

I am very sad that these occupiers keep stealing more lands from the Palestinians, but yet they get support from the Americans in reinforcing the occupations. I hope that justice will come soon eventually.

I know. Its sick what the U.S. government is using it's national resources for. And it's so dispiriting to see people (ie: "youreatool") lash out whenever someone speaks from the heart about U.S. government actions and the immorality of the whole enterprize they're committed to in the region. There is so much ignorance regarding U.S. government policies that it should be expected that people would attack someone who speaks from a moral center. Don't let them bring you down or make you feel that it is hopeless. It isn't.

      1) The disputed land came under Israeli administration as a result of a failed war launched by the Palestinians and other Arabs.
      2) It is not "Palestinian land" since there never was a country or sovereign state called "Palestine".
      3) Almost none of the established settlements displaced existing Palestinian villages. Most were built on state or public land.

@Bill – thanks for reciting Middle East History according to Rush Limbaugh. It's amazing how people can rationalize terrorist acts when they are committed by Israel.

There is no such thing as palestinian people and those lands did not belong to you .... check your history book .... not the one you have re-rewitten after 48 or 67. Plastenians are refugees from other arab countries or immigrants. the land of israel was a no mans land for a long time and that is after the jewish people were chased out of it many years ago

@ Meteorite .... check the facts and the dictionary definition of terrorists and terrorists act.... go back to the history book to check your references and then come back to this post and post your results.....
As Bill said ....in general the arab countires and the palestinians have started almost every was or attack on jewish people thru all the years of the JEWISH STATE existance and before that .... Israel is trying to protect iteself and its existance from people which try to wipe it off the face of the globe.... I wonder which country in the world would bear such an attack with no retaliation ??

The buzzword of the past ten years is occupier. It's used ln the same way one uses the word and and is. What is Israel occupying? This is a legitimate country under the UN charter. The arabs never accepted the charter therefore they don't have a country. Instead they chose to use terror to force Jews off their own land. There was never a historical "Palestinian" people. If there was then why didn't they object to being occupied by Jordan and Egypt pre 1967? Not one mention of a "Palestine" before that. Does anyone know the origin of the name "Palestine" or even care to pick up a history book to research it? didn't think so..

We ( Christians ) are stupid. We show sympathy to Jews knowingly that they were the ones who killed Jesus Christ.

Yes, some of us are stupid... since it was not just the Jews that killed Jesus Christ, but also the Gentiles (us) that put Him on the cross and put a spear in His side. All are responsible... every sinner.

Jews made too many mistakes. Among those the talks and conversations with Jesus and Mohammad instead of killing both without any doubt as would do any other people of that time.

Christianity is built on the values of the first testiment. Unless your IQ is below 30 you should know that the first testiment is in fact the Jewish bible.

What made it YOUR land B? The British? Or was it Moses? And yes the Israeli government has been so accomodating of the Arabs in Israel: expelling them from their homes, allowing massacres in their refugee camps, depriving them of the basic rights afforded to all Israeli citizens, as well as imposing a blockade on Gaza, building on Arab land illegally (I think the UN would agree with me). How can any Israeli leader promote peace talks yet refuse to freeze settlement construction. The Arabs have played their role in the violence as well: rocket attacks, suicide bombings, and kidnappings which in no way do I condone. But we all know the obstacle to peace now is the Israeli government (Netanyahu to be precise). Its sad that the truth is always distorted when it comes from a zionist.

C, we aren't using your made up definition. Instead use the real definition as in open up a #$% book and read it.

Zionism (Hebrew: ציונות‎, Tsiyonut) is a nationalist[1] Jewish political movement that, in its broadest sense, calls for the self-determination of the Jewish people in a sovereign Jewish national homeland

I have never witnessed more opposing opinions on a subject than this. There are reasons why politics and religion don't mix. Strong differing opinions and as a foundation many of the facts cannot be established. For the one who wrote the Jews killed Jesus, get a life and an education. First, the person you refer to as Jesus, well that was not his name. Perhaps Joshua or Yeshua. And there is no evidence of the date of his birthday. Nonetheless I'm happy that Jesus is the most celebrated Jew to ever live, and that every December when Christmas rolls around, most Christians celebrate a Jewish man's birthday. Now if Christians really wanted to follow in the steps of Jesus / Joshua / Yeshua they've convert to Judaism and practice religion to the way Jesus did as a devout Jew. As for the Palestinians, as many do I do not believe they are, Palestinian that is. Many have Jordanian heritage. Th bottom line is that when one country is attacked by a group of people, and the people that are attacked move their troops forward against their aggressors in self defense and then maintain that battle line to protect themselves, that new demarcation line usually holds until the aggressor, in this case some Palestinians and their terrorist counterparts, is willing to surrender and agree to a peace accord. Instead of that, the Palestinians come out with "let's destroy Israel" and at the same time expect Israel to retreat. No one No country with solid thinking would retreat and compromise their people's safety in the manner the Palestinians want. They don't want peace. They want Israel destroyed. They don't honor international law. They don't respect people's lives. Egypt and Saudi Arabia have come to terms and live in peace with Israel. Other Arab nations can do the same and the entire region would be a better place to live.

I guess you need to start with your self and get an education. you call building settlements in the West Bank self defense?!?! Israel is building settlements on occupied lands (that is a fact. Go after UN if you don't like it) and brings settlers to live there, and you call that self defense!! so if I understand this correctly, this means Israel is putting the settlers on the front line as human shields, right? and you seem to be proud of that...amazing

israel can end hamas in less than a week. why is it not? why are they selling more and more weapons to the palestinians undercover if they are truly worried about their safety? this is nothing but a pathetic excuse for israel to get more money, support, and sympathy from the west and the palestenians make the perfect scapegoats for violence. the more the conflict, the higher the awe factor. i see this as a business rather than anything with substance.

hudsonadam You clearly demonstrate how ignorance can be as contagious as the plague. You are spewing the same crap every socialist and extreme left winger has been doing for years. Making comments without being able to back them up seems to be a passtime for many. Being anti-Israel and anti-semetic is just too deep rooted for people like hudsonadam to use the part of his anatomy that God intended for thinking.

You just keep think that a land with over 2000 years of Jewish heritage, biblical heritage, and archiological heritage has no ties to the people who, for the other 1700 yrs included returning to this homeland in their daily prayers. Lets not forget to mention that there has been a Jewish presence for over 450 years.

israel needs to calm down on the settlements which are counterproductive and divisive. i don't foresee a happy ending anytime soon for either groups. we should stop giving israel free money and ask it to pay for itself. no more free military or stimulus aid. some republicans are against obama's stimulus bill for americans and at the very same time pro unconditional funding for israel. this is just pathetic, unacceptable, and unsustainable. time to pull the plug on this bs.

Can there be an app that does something useful like locating which cave Bin Ladin is hanging out in this week? That might be newsworthy.

On a side-note, maybe if Israel stopped making settlements in occupied territories we might not need the Bin Ladin tracking app in the first place. It's time that the US tells Israel that if they want our continued support, then they need to uphold their side of the bargain. Israel's breaking of agreements while we unconditionally support them has probably cost us as much in the middle east and riled up terrorists as much as anything else. In my opinion, until they clean up their act, they aren't much better than Hamas.

CNN, check your facts before you mislead the public. Your lead sentence says that the users of this app can check settlement activity in the West Bank, Gaza and The Golan Heights. Israel withdrew from Gaza in 2005. There are no Jews in Gaza. You are misrepresenting facts and leading your readers to believe that Jews are everywhere....stealing from Palestinians. Lest we forget that every withdrawl of land by the Israeli leads to rocket fire into central Israel killing civilians. Poor job on you!

@ Jack Frost – can you explain how this app promotes hatred? if you do a quick google search you can see that Americans for Peace Now is an American Jewish organization. They support Israel's right to exist. This app simply shows Israeli settlement activity in the West Bank. If you support that activity, which forgive me if I'm making the wrong assumption, but it seems you do, why would you be opposed to that activity being made public in an accessible way? Why would you want to hide that information?
