Seven former U.S. Air Force personnel gathered in Washington Monday to recount UFO sightings over nuclear weapons facilities in decades past – accounts that a UFO researcher says show extraterrestrial beings are interested in the world’s nuclear arms race and may be sending humans a message.
At a news conference at the National Press Club, the six former officers and one ex-enlisted man recalled either personal sightings or reports from subordinates and others of UFOs hovering over nuclear missile silos or nuclear weapons storage areas in the 1960s, '70s and '80s.
Three of the former Air Force officers – though they hadn’t seen the UFOs themselves - told reporters that UFOs hovering over silos around Montana’s Malmstrom Air Force Base in 1967 appeared to have temporarily deactivated some of the nuclear missiles.
Much of the testimony already has appeared in books, websites and elsewhere. But UFO researcher and author Robert Hastings, who organized the news conference, said the time has come for the U.S. government to acknowledge the UFO visits.
“I believe - these gentlemen believe - that this planet is being visited by beings from another world, who for whatever reason have taken an interest in the nuclear arms race which began at the end of World War II,” said Hastings, who added that more than 120 former military personnel have told him about UFOs visiting nuclear sites.
“Regarding the missile shutdown incidents, my opinion … is that whoever are aboard these craft are sending a signal to both Washington and Moscow, among others, that we are playing with fire – that the possession and threatened use of nuclear weapons potentially threatens the human race and the integrity of the planetary environment,” he said.
Former Air Force Capt. Robert Salas – who has written a book about the Montana incidents – said he was underground when a UFO hovered over his missile silo in March 1967, and therefore couldn’t see it. He said one of his guards above ground told him a red, glowing object about 30 feet in diameter was hovering just above the front gate of the facility, in an isolated area far from Malmstrom.
“And just as I [called my commander], our missiles began going into what’s called a no-go condition, or unlaunchable. Essentially, they were disabled while this object was still hovering over out site,” Salas said.
Salas and others said the military urged them at the time not to talk about the incidents.
Retired Col. Charles Halt recalled seeing UFOs over the woods near Royal Air Force Stations Bentwaters and Woodbridge in eastern England in December 1980. He and security personnel were investigating reports of strange lights just outside one of the bases.
“All through the forest was a bright glowing object,” he said Monday. “The best way I can describe it, it looked like an eye – with bright red, with a dark center. It appeared to be winking. It was shedding something like molten metal, was dripping off it.
“It silently moved through the trees, avoiding any contact, it bobbed up and down, and at one point it actually approached us. We tried to get closer. It receded out into the field, beyond the forest, and silently exploded into five white objects – gone. So we went out into the field looking for any evidence, because something had been apparently falling off it – and we find nothing,” he said.
He recalled subsequently seeing other objects in the sky, including one that stopped about 3,000 feet overhead and “sent down a concentrated beam at our feet.” No one was harmed.
“The best way I can equate it is sort of a laser beam. We stood there in awe. Was this a warning? Was this an attempt to communicate? Was this a weapon? Or just a probe?” he said.
At about the same time, he was hearing radio reports from base personnel that beams from some of the objects were “falling into or near the weapons storage area.”
In a staff meeting later, a general decided “it happened off base, so it’s a British affair,” Halt recalled. “In other words, they were loathe to get involved.”
The Air Force investigated UFOs from 1948 to 1969 under a program eventually called Project Blue Book. The service, on its website, says the project concluded that “no UFO reported, investigated, and evaluated by the Air Force has ever given any indication of threat to our national security.” It also says there has been "no evidence that sightings categorized as 'unidentified' are extraterrestrial vehicles."
Salas said the UFO phenomenon “is real, not imaginary.”
“There is current excessive secrecy in our government surrounding this phenomenon,” he said.
A reporter asked how many of the former military personnel subscribed to Hastings’ theory that the message of extraterrestrials is that humans should get rid of nuclear weapons, and how many of them believed that we should get rid of nukes. Of the seven, it appeared that only Salas raised his hand.
I was intrigued by the person who wondered if other nations with nukes have experienced this problem.
What if it were the Soviets and they knew Americans buy into the ET/UFO idea so much that what a great "cover" it would be to spy under if they sent a plane that looked like a UFO. You only hear about this happening in the 60's, 70's thru 90's. By then the Soviet Union had collapsed and could no longer afford to keep up the charade. Just a thought...
MikeyNYC says it best and gives a great chuckle. Ever see Solent Green? The aliens are cultivating a food supply, that's
why we have white meat, dark meat, yellow meat, and red meat.
With the size of the universe, the diverse forms of life just on our planet alone, how could anyone honestly think that we're the only ones? Seriously
Existence of flying aircraft that exhibit unusual flight abilities? I don't doubt it.
Manned by "ETs"? Why does that follow? It's just as likely these are aircraft designed and flown by humans.
With countless sightings over the years it seems odd that none of these ET folks have done anything other than just look at us. At some point they'd be attracted to all the lights of a big city and decide to stop by for a visit.
I fear that we increasingly live in an irrational age. It is well known that if you look for something you will find it. This is why science does double-blind studies! Unless you stake out a nuclear missile silo and also stake out a bare piece of ground with the same numbers of passer's by you can't truly say that silos involve more UFO sightings. Have any of these people done this? We are forgetting, as a culture, the very scientific method that created these weapons! Without the scientific method people are free to believe any old nonsense they want and their ability to do so depends not on their history, honesty, or rank. It merely depends on whether or not they "get" why we need the rational scientific method–something that is apparently not taught at the Air Force Academy.
Greetings Earthlings,
Ask any Air Force Flight Officer stationed at Minot AFB during the late sixties. A few will probably talk about such things. However, remember, for the most part anything that can deactivate a nuclear warhead falls under national security criteria. Many of these flight officers still are on retirement pay and maintain their orders.
People will think this is funny but think about this, you think God just created us? The universe is very big and there are many planets out there. I saw this movie and I think you should take a look at it. The day the earth stood still (1951) this is the original movie not the one from Tom Cruse.
The main thing in this movie is about nuclear weapons and what can happen if we continue using them....
Don't panic people....NASA will be all over this. Right after they make the muslims feel better about their accomplishments.
If Einstein was right about the speed of light being a barrier to travel, then these things are not space craft. I know for a fact hallucinations and bad memory are real - I do not know that Klatu is real
Operation Blue beam has begun. Dum dum dum. This is old news btw. Was in reuters over a week ago.
I believe there is life on another planet if there is here. One night in 1993, my girlfriend and I were driving from the movies in the city of Oxnard, CA and we witnessed a UFO above the city. We pulled over along with several other cars that said they had been following it since the hills of Ventura. It was disc shaped and had little windows and lights at the bottom. It hoovered above houses briefly and then would move on. We followed it all the way to Pt Mugu Naval Weapons Base until it vanished against the hills as hellos approached. To this day no one believes us. This UFO was low enough above the houses to see clearly that it was no helicopter or blimp. It was silent and observant. So yes I do believe these gentlemen when they say there is life out there other than us and they can possibly be sending us a message.
could these UFO's being flying reconnasance for beings from a planet so far away it takes decades to make the journey? worst case scenario is their planet is dying and they are looking for a new place to live. Sending a scout ship with a few individuals and sending large numbers that far in space are two completely different matters. Maybe the light-speed barrier hasn't be overcome by even these advanced beings if they are real. Worst case scenario is they are studying our weapons in order to refine their ability to disable them when they arrive. I hope I am wrong, but should we be so niave as to believe this isn't a possibility that we should prepare for on some level?
And just how does one prepare for a defense against a technology one cannot even comprehend?
Besides, we've got enough real problems right here and right now to keep us busy for the next 10,000 years. We don't need to fabricate any new ones. Perhaps we should consider doing what we can in our own lifetime to solve one or two of them. How about building an infrastructure to deliver water across the planet NOW before all the glaciers melt?
While I don't believe any ETs have sent us any mesages, or communicated with us, or flown over us, I do believe that if they did, their first messages should be to Muslims. Muslims have been bound into internecine wars for centuries. Of course christians have too, but they seem to be getting a handle on that...at least for now.
As more unstable Muslim countries obtain nuclear weapons, the chances of human survival on earth becomes less and less. sanjosemike
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence, and all I see is a bunch of people standing around claiming they saw something years ago. When you've captured a ship and shown me technology beyond our comprehension, then I'll believe. But just because some guy waves his arms and says he saw something doesn't prove aliens.
Well....it's a hell-of-a-way to keep people in fear.......people who are afraid are easy to control.
