Iran unveils squadrons of flying boats

Iran's Defense Ministry released photos of what it says are its new radar-evading flying boats, the Bavar 2.

Iran unveiled three squadrons of new flying boats on Tuesday, Iranian news agencies reported.

The craft, dubbed the Bavar 2, is armed with a machine gun and carries surveillance cameras, according to a report from the Iranian Student News Agency.

Video: Watch boats soar

"Islamic Republic of Iran is one of the few countries which managed to design, build and use flying boats in a short time," said Defense Minister Brig. Gen. Ahmad Vahidi, who oversaw the delivering of the aircraft at the Bandar Abbas naval facility on the Persian Gulf near the Strait of Hormuz.

The delivery comes as Iran celebrates its Week of Sacred Defense, which commemorates its eight-year-long resistance to the 1980 Iraqi invasion, according to the Fars News Agency.

The flying boats look like one Iran used during Persian Gulf war games in April 2006. Media reports from the time include a video of a flying boat taking off.

After those 2006 reports, bloggers poked fun at Iran’s so-called stealth technology, saying the flying boat looked like something anyone could buy in kit form from mechanical magazine ads.

Yes, the entire world SHOULD take action immediately!
I'll start with an inquiry in price and availability for civilian use.
The only way it's radar evading is because it's REAL low on the water and would have to fly low to remain radar unobservable.
But for a rapid response aircraft for civilian emergencies, it'd be quite a good craft!

I imagine that you could only land this thing in the calmest of waters. Watch out pro-democracy demonstrators, there is a camera on you. Is this not against their religion. If people were meant to fly.............. Everything is against their religion. I read that they can no longer own a dog. It is highly frowned upon to keep it in the house because dogs are known to be dirty. They are obsessed with things that are dirty. The unelected mullahs also say that pet ownership is too western and that anyone who owns one is just copying western civilizations. These people are psycho. Women in Saudi Arabia are not allowed to walk their dogs for fear of attracting young men. Poor dog. It has to wait on a gender specific walker. Religion is weird and religious conservatives in America won't be happy until we have become Iran.

Yeah that engine hanging out in the breeze is a real radar fooler. I'm pretty sure a washing machine sized piece of metal is going to be stealthy as hell. I wouldn't mind having one though. Might be a little tricky to land in anything less than a .5 meter wave.

      What are you afraid of?
Speed Boats with a propeller ? That is just sad you and Glenn Beck get your undies on a bunch because of this, so now the US has to police every country and act if they don't like what they see? Grow up!
If you apply the same rationale to the US, then what should happen to us if we develop Flying Boats?
We, America have enough power to turn Iran into ashes, that does not means that we have to and I am pretty confident that we will if attacked.

As a offensive platform, these are a joke, as a maritime patrol craft these are awesome. Radar evading? have the Iranians not heard about lookdown shoot down radar tech that was perfected in the 80's? Interms of protecting territorial waterways, this is a nice craft.

If you're worried about these things being packed full of explosives and being flown into our ships, just do a quick youtube search on "phalanx system" and your mind will be quickly put at ease. These things shoot down antiship missiles which are much faster, stealthier, and smaller than these antiquated planes. On the other hand, they do look like a lot of fun to fly.

These are copies of a 1980s-vintage, German-built wing-in-ground-effect (WIG) craft. With their large, angular tail units and broad ground-effect wing, they certainly aren't "stealthy." Moreover, the high-mounted engine and its large propellor will be clearly visible both on radar and on thermal imagers. I'd hate to be the guy who tries to "fly" one of these contraptions in combat.

For those of us who spent time in military aviation, just the name IRAN has a specific meaning, which is Inspect and Repair As Needed. I think any inspection would uncover needed repairs, not only for these new fangled flying boats, but for the whole country!! We shouldn't worry about attaching Iran for any reason. All these clowns have to do is look like they are doing something we don't like, and we will spend millions trying to find out what it really is. Our enemies don't have to attack us on the battlefield. All they have to do is make us spend ourselves to death. Right now, they are doing a pretty good job of it. We'll still win, but we will be poorer for it.

Why in the world should we even bother worrying about Iran building prop-power flying boats with BB guns when we have the technological know-how for building jet-powered variants with stealth technology? Also, does Iran actually think it found new technologies? This is old-school tech. Heck, a Russian from decades past figured out how to create a flying boat that can submerge.

These are ground effect type aircraft. Similar to the Soviet Ekranoplan. These aircraft have been build by amateurs, but are very limited in their capabilities. They are unstable outside of ground effect. They have a lot of drag and are underpowered. They have, in their current form, a maximum load of around 800lbs, including pilot and fuel. They have a top speed of around 100MPH. They can't follow terrain, so they're useless against land troops. They are only usable on calm seas, so they have limited value against water based forces.

Their only value to the Iranian military is as a propaganda tool to try to impress their own citizens. The actually military value of these things is nil.

A reported witness stated, "look up in the sky, It's a Plane... No, its a friggin Boat????"
6 planes were reported to have crashed while trying to refuel in air, and hundreds of discarded petrol cans have been found in an E/SE direction from LA to Houston... Meanwhile, thousands of flying carpets were spotted heading towards..

As a former Intelligence analyst for the US NAVY one must always consider that Iran physically controlls the SOH (straight of hormus). All they have to do is let a few sea mines go in the SOH or sink a tanker and no oil tanker would be able to get insurance to transit the straight. Meaning if a ship were to sink, oil prices would hit above 10 dollars a gallon at the pumps. 70-80's ring a bell? We have to be firm, but also very watchfull since they control the worlds oil.

@ Texas Pete: Missiles? I am thinking a baseball, or .50 cal, either would likely down them. Or we would install astro-turf and rubber tees down the sides of our ships and pretend they are the ball fetcher at the driving range and have everyone just slam away golf balls.

Looking at it, the wing is a high lift, low-efficiency design, and very short, so I am guessing this thing walks(flies) a very fine line between controlled flight and chaos. It is all the pilot can probably do to keep it aloft, much less line it up for a gun run. As far as radar evading, pretty tough to claim that with an engine block exposed like that, plus a pure vertical vertical stabilizer and T-Tail horizontal one. I think the Iranians had the radar turning in standby when they ran that test, not actively transmitting. Last, any IR weapon will have a hayday with that glowing engine in the air.

It will s*ck to be the pilot of that thing in an engagement, his survival is only hooked to the low and slow, and certainly not any stealth characteristics this sled has.

Mine did and I spent about $2,000 for the radar so i could see other BOATS in the fog and at night Yes radar can see things that are close o the water and even on the water and we are talking about a $2K radar not something exotic. And YES I could see wooden and fiberglass boats although the big 700 foot long steel hull ships show up much better, small sailboats like mide show up too.

Big Dave, are you bothering to look at the bigger picture? The Iranian government and conservative religionists posture against the USA, but it is calculated, I believe, rather than based on unchecked emotion. In fact, my research and correspondence lead me to conclude (along with many others) that the Iranian PEOPLE in general like the USA. Bombing Iranian civilian populations (which is unavoidable in nuclear strikes) would be so counter-productive as to make it absolutely not worth doing. When we start throwing nukes around innocent people with no clear national-security emergency we have forfeited any moral high ground.

Ah, I believe you've identified how they are "radar evading". Radar is ineffective in locating sunken objects.

Only good for patrolling their own waters and controlling fishing boats, etc. They pose no military threat. I'm sure "radar evading" means just that...flying very low to evade radar. Certainly with that engine and prop mounted high...they are NOT "low observable" by any means.
