Iran unveils squadrons of flying boats

Iran's Defense Ministry released photos of what it says are its new radar-evading flying boats, the Bavar 2.

Iran unveiled three squadrons of new flying boats on Tuesday, Iranian news agencies reported.

The craft, dubbed the Bavar 2, is armed with a machine gun and carries surveillance cameras, according to a report from the Iranian Student News Agency.

"Islamic Republic of Iran is one of the few countries which managed to design, build and use flying boats in a short time," said Defense Minister Brig. Gen. Ahmad Vahidi, who oversaw the delivering of the aircraft at the Bandar Abbas naval facility on the Persian Gulf near the Strait of Hormuz.

The delivery comes as Iran celebrates its Week of Sacred Defense, which commemorates its eight-year-long resistance to the 1980 Iraqi invasion, according to the Fars News Agency.

The flying boats look like one Iran used during Persian Gulf war games in April 2006. Media reports from the time include a video of a flying boat taking off.

After those 2006 reports, bloggers poked fun at Iran’s so-called stealth technology, saying the flying boat looked like something anyone could buy in kit form from mechanical magazine ads.

Must admit they are real terror weapons, I would be terrified too if I had to try flying one. Radar evading? Just because they don't show on Iranian radar doesn't make them invisible. Besides a machine gun they have an iPad with a complete copy of the Korahn in case the operator needs assistance. Hahaha.

This is old technology. It's called an Ekranoplan. Russians and others developed them back in the 60's. Wanna see a real one, just search for Caspian Sea Monster. That thing was HUGE. These things are a cheap, mass produced irritant. There's no way for Iran to produce indigenous naval vessels to go head to head against the US Navy. The only thing they can do is swarm the ships hoping that one will get through. Modern day kamikaze pilots. The US has more to worry about Iranians anti-ship missiles then anything else. Of which, if I was planning a defense against Iran, that'd be some of the first things to be neutralized.

Perhaps I am wrong...but I really think you could order a blueprint to build something very similar to this from one of those ads in popular mechanics back in the 80s. Either way, they might strafe some fisherman, but they aren't going to cause any concern for any military grade installation. If they were to attempt, the pilot is a sitting duck and as good as gone. the element of surpirse might last 30 secs, IF then. The sound that thing is going to put off relative to its speed isn't exactly going to provide the element of surprise. Surprising how quick they fall from the sky maybe.
