Iran unveils squadrons of flying boats

Iran's Defense Ministry released photos of what it says are its new radar-evading flying boats, the Bavar 2.

Iran unveiled three squadrons of new flying boats on Tuesday, Iranian news agencies reported.

The craft, dubbed the Bavar 2, is armed with a machine gun and carries surveillance cameras, according to a report from the Iranian Student News Agency.

"Islamic Republic of Iran is one of the few countries which managed to design, build and use flying boats in a short time," said Defense Minister Brig. Gen. Ahmad Vahidi, who oversaw the delivering of the aircraft at the Bandar Abbas naval facility on the Persian Gulf near the Strait of Hormuz.

The delivery comes as Iran celebrates its Week of Sacred Defense, which commemorates its eight-year-long resistance to the 1980 Iraqi invasion, according to the Fars News Agency.

The flying boats look like one Iran used during Persian Gulf war games in April 2006. Media reports from the time include a video of a flying boat taking off.

After those 2006 reports, bloggers poked fun at Iran’s so-called stealth technology, saying the flying boat looked like something anyone could buy in kit form from mechanical magazine ads.

This may be an overly simplistic, even childish view. However, does anyone think that, without the armaments, these look like they could be INSANELY fun!!!!! I see that a few of you agree with me. Cool!

These are not flying boats and are not even considered aircraft. About 20 years ago, Popular Science revealed a new type of ground effect vehicle, which these vehicles eerily resemble. These vehicles cannot attain a height greater than 50-60 feet and fly on a cushion of air created by their, broad, flying body design. As somoneone mentioned, it appears to be resemble a kit available through mail-order and the design for it probably is available to anybody online. Remember a few years ago when you could by an plan for an airplane, which was powered by a VW Beetle engine? Yep, that's what these are. These are not combat aircraft and a single A-10 Warthog could probably make quick work of all the Iranian squadrons of these so called "flying boats".

Was the boom attached to the theme park ride removed from the picture via photoshop?

After seeing these images, I am convinced that any nuclear threat from a country constructing such machinery to be composed of the decayed Americium-241 found in smoke detectors.

Think of the possibilities of using one as a deep sea fishiing boat, fly in and catch the fish by surprise. Then if you didn't get a bite you could blow them out the water....

These boats could be a real threat. They could crash in the water and the pilot could get injured. I hope the US can defend us from this new strategy. I do not quite understand the importance of landing in the water. Maybe there unsure about the worthiness of the aircraft and the pilot can just crash in the water. These Iranians are very sneaky, not very smart, but very sneaky. Watching Iran is like watching your teenage son making stupid, bad choices. Of course we are running ourselves into the ground also under our brilliant leadership.

Does the media honestly expect people to worry about Irans flying boat technology?

A radar guided gattling gun on the side of most US military ships would turn this "flying boat" and its "pilot" into 1000 pieces in about 0.3 seconds, because there is no way in hell this thing is any sort of stealth.

All fun and joke aside I do not think we have anything to worry about but at the same time we should take this seriously. As a Techie/Mechanical junkie be honest I am actually impressed 1) It actually works, 2) It is compact and easily transportable 3) A few of our major cities around the world are close to large bodies of water. That said we do not want any idiots getting their hands on somethng like this to start flying them into buildings or crowded spaces loaded with explosives. They already use bikes and cars on our troops. I think the major concern here is letting it get further outside into the wrong hands.

This is the most rickety p.o.s. I've ever seen. It's a bayou fan boat with wings and a gun, and I'm betting the average cajun is more well armed. Gotta love the Iranian navy!

    Aren't those usually called "planes"?

@Chuck you said "These people are psycho. Women in Saudi Arabia are not allowed to walk their dogs for fear of attracting young men."

Let me explain to you how stupid and ignorant you are. THEY ARE A DIFFERENT CULTURE. Why can't you accept that? why must you be like "EVERYONE IN THE WORLD SHOULD BE EXACTLY LIKE US AND IF THEY ARE NOT THEN WE HAVE EVERY RIGHT TO INVADE AND OCCUPY THEIR COUNTRY"

What are you insane or something? Who are you calling the psycho's? America is the one invading and occupying countries based on total lies. America is the one responsible for the deaths of over 1 million Iraqi children. 1 MILLION! and you have the nerve to call the Iranian's psycho? They haven't invaded or attacked another nation in over 400 years (fact: the Iraqi's invaded THEM with the support of the US government).

America has the highest rates of mental illness, the highest rates of crime, the highest rates of divorce, etc. Perhaps they are doing a good thing trying to protect their citizens from becoming fat, disgusting, ignorant racist idiots like yourself.
