Iran unveils squadrons of flying boats

Iran's Defense Ministry released photos of what it says are its new radar-evading flying boats, the Bavar 2.

Iran unveiled three squadrons of new flying boats on Tuesday, Iranian news agencies reported.

The craft, dubbed the Bavar 2, is armed with a machine gun and carries surveillance cameras, according to a report from the Iranian Student News Agency.

Video: Watch boats soar

"Islamic Republic of Iran is one of the few countries which managed to design, build and use flying boats in a short time," said Defense Minister Brig. Gen. Ahmad Vahidi, who oversaw the delivering of the aircraft at the Bandar Abbas naval facility on the Persian Gulf near the Strait of Hormuz.

The delivery comes as Iran celebrates its Week of Sacred Defense, which commemorates its eight-year-long resistance to the 1980 Iraqi invasion, according to the Fars News Agency.

The flying boats look like one Iran used during Persian Gulf war games in April 2006. Media reports from the time include a video of a flying boat taking off.

After those 2006 reports, bloggers poked fun at Iran’s so-called stealth technology, saying the flying boat looked like something anyone could buy in kit form from mechanical magazine ads.

Oh no! They are catching up to the 1905 technology. 1905 is when the first "seaplane" was invented(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seaplane). Way to re-invent technology and say it's your own....nice.

We had those types flying boats in WW2. They are taken out quite easily. Next they will show off new type of submarine that runs on batteries. Oh ya, we had those in WW2 as well. Idiots

How is the pilot going to rewind his disposeable camera for surveillance, while flying a World War I airplane?

@Chuck you said "These people are psycho. Women in Saudi Arabia are not allowed to walk their dogs for fear of attracting young men."

    LOL LOL LOL

Let me explain to you how stupid and ignorant you are. THEY ARE A DIFFERENT CULTURE. Why can't you accept that? why must you be like "EVERYONE IN THE WORLD SHOULD BE EXACTLY LIKE US AND IF THEY ARE NOT THEN WE HAVE EVERY RIGHT TO INVADE AND OCCUPY THEIR COUNTRY"

What are you insane or something? Who are you calling the psycho's? America is the one invading and occupying countries based on total lies. America is the one responsible for the deaths of over 1 million Iraqi children. 1 MILLION! and you have the nerve to call the Iranian's psycho? They haven't invaded or attacked another nation in over 400 years (fact: the Iraqi's invaded THEM with the support of the US government).

America has the highest rates of mental illness, the highest rates of crime, the highest rates of divorce, etc. Perhaps they are doing a good thing trying to protect their citizens from becoming fat, disgusting, ignorant racist idiots like yourself.

So Iran reads vintage popular mechanics magazines and the stepford broad from Alaska believes everything the teleprompter tells her to say. The latter is much more dangerous. Iran is just trying to get on SNL.

This is World War II tech and is totally useless. The scary thing about this is that people in Iran's military believed that this is a real and useful weapons system in the modern world. This clearly shows that the people making decisions there are not dealing with the real world. We really need to fear people who can't think logically possessing nuclear weapons... If it weren't for that I'd be laughing... but in that context it isn't funny.

Iran's economy is bankruped. It has no airforce, no navy. It has few helicopters. All the money from its oil has been spent on massive subsidy to keep prices of basic food items down such as eggs, bread, chicken and also public transportation so that people don't revolt. It costs Iran about $8 billion a year! Now you multiply that to 30 years and you see how much money has been wasted. Khamenei and its revolutionnary guards have stollen more than $100 billions over the past 10 years and the money his hidden in China, Russia, North Korea, Venezuela... for the raining days once they are deposed...They have made Bernie Maddoff look like a saint!

Actually I think they are pretty cool, other than otters and beaver float planes that carry multiple people I think that's one of the first single seat purpose designed float planes ever. Bet there would be a market for them worldwide if Iran considers it.

The only way this thing is going to beat our radar is if if it flys underneath it. If it does its bound to fly so slow you could shoot it down with a .22

Are they even supposed to be tactically useful? The showed off some drones a few weeks ago. If the drones actually work, what is the point of sending out flying boats?
