Iran unveils squadrons of flying boats

Iran's Defense Ministry released photos of what it says are its new radar-evading flying boats, the Bavar 2.

Iran unveiled three squadrons of new flying boats on Tuesday, Iranian news agencies reported.

The craft, dubbed the Bavar 2, is armed with a machine gun and carries surveillance cameras, according to a report from the Iranian Student News Agency.

"Islamic Republic of Iran is one of the few countries which managed to design, build and use flying boats in a short time," said Defense Minister Brig. Gen. Ahmad Vahidi, who oversaw the delivering of the aircraft at the Bandar Abbas naval facility on the Persian Gulf near the Strait of Hormuz.

The delivery comes as Iran celebrates its Week of Sacred Defense, which commemorates its eight-year-long resistance to the 1980 Iraqi invasion, according to the Fars News Agency.

The flying boats look like one Iran used during Persian Gulf war games in April 2006. Media reports from the time include a video of a flying boat taking off.

After those 2006 reports, bloggers poked fun at Iran’s so-called stealth technology, saying the flying boat looked like something anyone could buy in kit form from mechanical magazine ads.

Iran would love to live in peace, just not under the influence of a rogue nation! They say that Iran is the largest state sponsored terrorist country in the world is not true! Infact, the U.S. "Funded" Bin Laddin and his crew before they were deemed terrorist, during Desert Storm! The U.S. has harbored and produced terrorists since the beginning! The KKK are terrorists! There's been mass murders of slaves and other innocent black ppl! Isreal use their might because they have the U.S. funding them, but when the American ppl want help, it's Socialism! Just to show how backwards this country is! They'd rather neglect their own country, but give unlimited support to another country. What's so great about that?

New Technology, it is nothing more than an Iranian Ekranoplane, They had an Ekranoplane for sale on ebay recentley. They Russians have been flying these ground effect aircraft for years. The USAF calls the russian version the "Caspian Sea Monster". These are nothing new, another example of borrowed technology. I bet the Israili air force can destroy them all within 1 hr.

For a country that's hit with sanctions and isolated from the world... this is pretty impressive. It's great for Gorilla warfare. Che would love these planes.

It's obvious that these are floating planes, not flying boats...

This just in....Iranian flying boats defeated by large swells and seagulls.
I wish I could see the Great White Shark they always show during Shark Week, "leaping?" out of the water and just munching on one of those boats as it tries to achieve flight.

Thank you for the laugh. You have truly lifted my day with your new flying boats. And I believe the world feels much safer as well.

Sorry Iran, a nuclear powered aircraft carrier loaded with F-21s is still going to kick your ass. I'd settle down and agree to talks.

The real logic behind Iran's flying boat squadron has to do with their highly capable and world-renown "Psychological Operations" arm of their defense agency. I've been fortunate enough to interview one of their highest-ranking officers within this agency and he tells me the real reason behind the flying boats is so any enemy will drop to the ground and laugh hysterically when they see these flying boats coming at them. Then, while the enemy is on the ground laughing, Iran would then launch their ground assault with "plane-cars" (ie, planes that drive like cars) to run over the enemy while they are on the ground. It seemed to make sense at the time and their color, overhead slide-show of all this was very impressive.
