Iran unveils squadrons of flying boats

Iran's Defense Ministry released photos of what it says are its new radar-evading flying boats, the Bavar 2.

Iran unveiled three squadrons of new flying boats on Tuesday, Iranian news agencies reported.

The craft, dubbed the Bavar 2, is armed with a machine gun and carries surveillance cameras, according to a report from the Iranian Student News Agency.

Video: Watch boats soar

"Islamic Republic of Iran is one of the few countries which managed to design, build and use flying boats in a short time," said Defense Minister Brig. Gen. Ahmad Vahidi, who oversaw the delivering of the aircraft at the Bandar Abbas naval facility on the Persian Gulf near the Strait of Hormuz.

The delivery comes as Iran celebrates its Week of Sacred Defense, which commemorates its eight-year-long resistance to the 1980 Iraqi invasion, according to the Fars News Agency.

The flying boats look like one Iran used during Persian Gulf war games in April 2006. Media reports from the time include a video of a flying boat taking off.

After those 2006 reports, bloggers poked fun at Iran’s so-called stealth technology, saying the flying boat looked like something anyone could buy in kit form from mechanical magazine ads.

They really do look like something designed in someone's garage. And they also look really easy to shoot down. Anyone want to guess what a U.S. destroyer's Aegis system equipped with Phalanx cannons will do to a hundred of these (simultaneously)?

Ah, another weapon of mass distortion. More of a threat to the Iranian citizenry than anyone else.

Dear ALL DUDU who think Iran has weak military I am sure when any action happen in future then your mind will be expose because most Iranian not afraid of death they are good defenders and you must believe in middle east IRAN is No.1 in Military.
This is game you can see only some defend tools, my opinion is Iran never attacked any country and in last century,if you study in history it proved this matter.
So better don’t have doubt Iran is good defender and not as attacker.

OMG those things are so funny, it looks like a BB gun or a Paintball gun could take them out. An Apached could take out their whole squadron.

I'm worried. An F/A-18F Super Hornet is going to roll in on a squadron of those and go nose first into the drink. When they recover the flight recorder the pilot's last words are going to be, "hahahahahahahahhahaha Whoops! hahahahahahah"

Boy....thats handy isn't it?? They can't break ground effect, so they'll only be able to climb to 15 or 20 ft.......sounds like a turkey shoot to me!!!

We really shouldn't dismiss Iran's military machine as incompetent. Those planes are cheap to build and, if used in concert with formations of attack boats, could be quite effective against targets near Iran's coast (i.e., the oil-critical Straits of Hormuz). I think Iran's frantic preparation for an all-out defensive war is tantamount to an admission that they are seeking, and will use, nuclear weapons.

Kamal: I agree with you the Iranian people are probaly just like all people. They do not want war. I feel sorry for the Iranian people as they are dominated by a bad government who hires thugs to keep the people suppressed. I hope one day the people of Iran find a way to break free of oppression.

Yes! Take HEED America! Nevermind our tens of thousands of fighter aircraft stationed around the world, and our long range stealth bombers not to mention who are all nuclear capable, and our untouchable Naval armada including nuclear submarines, and inter-continantal balistic missiles. Watch out for Iran's flying boats.

Perhaps we should all take a deep breath. If these pose no military threat to us, what is the problem?

Keep in mind that press releases from Iran about military items are meant for the middle eastern and asian anti-American audience that wants to believe it is true. It is part of the attempt by Iran to be the leader of the Islamic world; that is, convince the illiterate masses Iran possesses many modern unstoppable weapons that can defeat America. The releases must be read and the photos examined very carefully as Iran will exaggerate the capabilities and make use of photoshop to obtain their desire results. I don't understand why they didn't place some 4inch pvc pipe on the sides and claim it could fire missles.

Having said that, if you would like a better version for your very own, visit Universal Hovercraft at http://www.hovercraft.com/content . They have wing-in-ground effect hovercraft available as turnkey or plans/kit.
