Iran unveils squadrons of flying boats

Iran's Defense Ministry released photos of what it says are its new radar-evading flying boats, the Bavar 2.

Iran unveiled three squadrons of new flying boats on Tuesday, Iranian news agencies reported.

The craft, dubbed the Bavar 2, is armed with a machine gun and carries surveillance cameras, according to a report from the Iranian Student News Agency.

"Islamic Republic of Iran is one of the few countries which managed to design, build and use flying boats in a short time," said Defense Minister Brig. Gen. Ahmad Vahidi, who oversaw the delivering of the aircraft at the Bandar Abbas naval facility on the Persian Gulf near the Strait of Hormuz.

The delivery comes as Iran celebrates its Week of Sacred Defense, which commemorates its eight-year-long resistance to the 1980 Iraqi invasion, according to the Fars News Agency.

The flying boats look like one Iran used during Persian Gulf war games in April 2006. Media reports from the time include a video of a flying boat taking off.

After those 2006 reports, bloggers poked fun at Iran’s so-called stealth technology, saying the flying boat looked like something anyone could buy in kit form from mechanical magazine ads.

I expect to see Indiana Jones swimming out to one being chased by tribesmen in the 1930's. I mean, machine guns? What are they gonna do, get in a dogfight with an F-22?

They would never even see the F-22. They would have a missle lock on them well before they came into visual range.

I love the propeller on the back! Top speed = 55 mph. Easy target to take down.

Never underestimate the enemy, you younger generation would be amazed what the North Viennese solders could do with little, inferior, or next to nothing equipment / materials during the Vietnam War.

Bro, are you concerned that somehow one of these radar-evading flying boats will bomb us? What WON'T make you panic?

Get real, Georgn. Good old GWB included Iran in his "Axis of Evil" speech way back in 2002. And what exactly did he do about it between 2002 and 2008?

Those look pretty cool... I wouldn't mind having one to take out to the lake... just no where to put the bikini clad ladies... then again, it is Iran.. they don't have bikini clad ladies... Let's just send in a squadron of drones to knock'em out of the sky, or sink em... ok now I am confused... If a drone commander shoots one down, does it count as an air force kill or a naval sinking?

That's actually a very valid question... I wonder how they would classify that. You'd think it would depend on the state of the air/water craft at the time of destruction.

Also, what would a F-18 pilot draw on his fuselage if he shot one down? I got my money on a Rubber Ducky with wings spread out.

Wow. We don't even need to shoot these down. Just put sanctions on rubber bands and AAA batteries and Iran won't be able to afford to make them. They have got to be kidding with these things.

The Tea Baggers are getting scared now that we are not taking action to stop the Iranians. Look, they're building flying boats! Fox News will have this under "BREAKING NEWS" and all the childish Tea Baggers will rush to get their paranaoi going!

      Glenn Beck is crying....

Yeah that does seem to be a modified Lake Amphibian. So basically the Iranians are all excited about their souped up decade old technology with a nice new paint job. Seriously, can I go back to sleep now?
