Iran unveils squadrons of flying boats

Iran's Defense Ministry released photos of what it says are its new radar-evading flying boats, the Bavar 2.

Iran unveiled three squadrons of new flying boats on Tuesday, Iranian news agencies reported.

The craft, dubbed the Bavar 2, is armed with a machine gun and carries surveillance cameras, according to a report from the Iranian Student News Agency.

"Islamic Republic of Iran is one of the few countries which managed to design, build and use flying boats in a short time," said Defense Minister Brig. Gen. Ahmad Vahidi, who oversaw the delivering of the aircraft at the Bandar Abbas naval facility on the Persian Gulf near the Strait of Hormuz.

The delivery comes as Iran celebrates its Week of Sacred Defense, which commemorates its eight-year-long resistance to the 1980 Iraqi invasion, according to the Fars News Agency.

The flying boats look like one Iran used during Persian Gulf war games in April 2006. Media reports from the time include a video of a flying boat taking off.

After those 2006 reports, bloggers poked fun at Iranโ€™s so-called stealth technology, saying the flying boat looked like something anyone could buy in kit form from mechanical magazine ads.

Time for the US to spend about 500 billion dollars for flying boat counter measures?

Are you people stupid? These are what are called WIGE or Wing In Ground Efect craft and are an off-shoot of a hovercraft or an Air-Cushioned Vehicle (ACV). They really have little or no military value, and are more of a hobby type of craft, that unless ramped up to a much larger scale, have no effecvtiveness. They are toys not bonafide weapons. Just another example of how crazy the so-called President of Iran is. Yeah, try strapping some of your nuclear weapons you are going to make on one of these and attack us with it. See how far it will fly then. Oh, and there's no Stealth to them, they are just too samll to show up on most Radar's. Morons!

Squadrons of these armed with missiles or RPGs could do a lot of damage. Do some research on "technicals".

And if this is the Bavar-2 I'd hate to see what the Bavar-1 looks like. That procession of them in the photo looks like the Swan ride on the lake at Disney World.

Well, good for Iran's military. That brings them about up to par with 1930's Germany now.

They'd do better selling civilian versions to rich kids. Heck, if I had some money to blow, I'd buy one of these.
