Iran unveils squadrons of flying boats

Iran's Defense Ministry released photos of what it says are its new radar-evading flying boats, the Bavar 2.

Iran unveiled three squadrons of new flying boats on Tuesday, Iranian news agencies reported.

The craft, dubbed the Bavar 2, is armed with a machine gun and carries surveillance cameras, according to a report from the Iranian Student News Agency.

"Islamic Republic of Iran is one of the few countries which managed to design, build and use flying boats in a short time," said Defense Minister Brig. Gen. Ahmad Vahidi, who oversaw the delivering of the aircraft at the Bandar Abbas naval facility on the Persian Gulf near the Strait of Hormuz.

The delivery comes as Iran celebrates its Week of Sacred Defense, which commemorates its eight-year-long resistance to the 1980 Iraqi invasion, according to the Fars News Agency.

The flying boats look like one Iran used during Persian Gulf war games in April 2006. Media reports from the time include a video of a flying boat taking off.

After those 2006 reports, bloggers poked fun at Iran’s so-called stealth technology, saying the flying boat looked like something anyone could buy in kit form from mechanical magazine ads.

These are just variants of the ancient Ekranoplan flying boats built by the old Soviet Union. The ones in the video are tiny compared to what the Russians built in the 1950's and 1960's.

These little simple things are based on a design that is decades old and it didn't really catch on then and it probably won't now. They do look like a heck of a lot of fun to play with.
Radar evadting in 2010, who is kidding whom?

They should make RC kits out of these and sell them online to finance their nuclear effort. Now there's a real idea.

A couple of P38 Lightening or P51 Mustang will take them down. No need to waste tax payer's money with F-22s.

Let's welcome Iran's air force to WW2 standard.

It's like we're going up against a villlian from one the 1960s James Bond movies. I'm sure he'll end up revealing his plan to destroy the world with a giant Death Ray hidden somewhere in the desert.

Does anyone know what these aircraft are made of ? If you can't see them on radar, they could easily sneek up on unsuspecting US Naval ships and BOOM.....

I question the news report. Really, this has to be some hoax and a pic from some ww1 archive. There is no way in hell that with all the engineering might of a future super power has the gonads to call this part of the Iran Navy.... By the way I just read they are concealing a nuclear development lab in the form of an Easy Bake Oven... Darn smart if you axe me....

I can see situations where vehicles like these could be very useful. I think the United States Coast Guard would love to have a fleet of them for running down drug smugglers. Very innovative.
