Iran unveils squadrons of flying boats

Iran's Defense Ministry released photos of what it says are its new radar-evading flying boats, the Bavar 2.

Iran unveiled three squadrons of new flying boats on Tuesday, Iranian news agencies reported.

The craft, dubbed the Bavar 2, is armed with a machine gun and carries surveillance cameras, according to a report from the Iranian Student News Agency.

Video: Watch boats soar

"Islamic Republic of Iran is one of the few countries which managed to design, build and use flying boats in a short time," said Defense Minister Brig. Gen. Ahmad Vahidi, who oversaw the delivering of the aircraft at the Bandar Abbas naval facility on the Persian Gulf near the Strait of Hormuz.

The delivery comes as Iran celebrates its Week of Sacred Defense, which commemorates its eight-year-long resistance to the 1980 Iraqi invasion, according to the Fars News Agency.

The flying boats look like one Iran used during Persian Gulf war games in April 2006. Media reports from the time include a video of a flying boat taking off.

After those 2006 reports, bloggers poked fun at Iran’s so-called stealth technology, saying the flying boat looked like something anyone could buy in kit form from mechanical magazine ads.

  2. Reality Sinks In

I think Snoopy could take it out with his Sopwith Camel. However, the Iran problem is not their military hardware. We would destroy every bunker, tank, plane, and boat within a matter of hours. It is the millions of insurgents with Kalashnikovs and RPGs that would pop up everywhere. And that, my friends, is why we want to avoid invasion at almost all costs. See Afghanistan for example.

    Don't underestimate these craft.

They are perfect for hit and run guerrilla tactics. They can hide anywhere along the coast, pop up out of nowhere, strike, and disappear. An hour latter they can do it again fifty miles away. Being ground effect machines, they would fly so low to the water they would extremely difficult to spot on radar unless you were right on top of them. Also, being able to fly, they are not limited to traveling over water; they are only limited to taking off and landing on water.

Finally, these things would be cheap enough to stamp them out in the thousands. They could really make life miserable for anyone going up against them. Something doesn't have to be high tech to be effective. I bet the U.S. Coast Guard would love to have a fleet of these things for running down drug smugglers.

A lot of the comments I have seen in this blog dismiss the Iranian military as technologically inferior and see them as a joke. I do not see them as a bunch of buffoons, but as a serious threat. Remember, in Vietnam a third rate military power defeated the most technologically advanced military force in the world.

They should use these for sightseeing tours or rental recreational vehicles. They would probably make more money that way. These not practical war machines.
