Iran unveils squadrons of flying boats

Iran's Defense Ministry released photos of what it says are its new radar-evading flying boats, the Bavar 2.

Iran unveiled three squadrons of new flying boats on Tuesday, Iranian news agencies reported.

The craft, dubbed the Bavar 2, is armed with a machine gun and carries surveillance cameras, according to a report from the Iranian Student News Agency.

Video: Watch boats soar

"Islamic Republic of Iran is one of the few countries which managed to design, build and use flying boats in a short time," said Defense Minister Brig. Gen. Ahmad Vahidi, who oversaw the delivering of the aircraft at the Bandar Abbas naval facility on the Persian Gulf near the Strait of Hormuz.

The delivery comes as Iran celebrates its Week of Sacred Defense, which commemorates its eight-year-long resistance to the 1980 Iraqi invasion, according to the Fars News Agency.

The flying boats look like one Iran used during Persian Gulf war games in April 2006. Media reports from the time include a video of a flying boat taking off.

After those 2006 reports, bloggers poked fun at Iran’s so-called stealth technology, saying the flying boat looked like something anyone could buy in kit form from mechanical magazine ads.

The Iranians are on to something here. Since they have no way to compete technologically they came up with another way to evade the 'enemy'. This approach allows them to fly right past armies that are too busy laughing at these silly pea shoters.

They're called flarecraft and they've been getting more use lately as island hoppers. They usually get 100 mpg. Radar evading to a point but we have radar that can count the blades as they spin. Sssooo they beat

      Mehdi General Dr Bad:
Tell me you're a real Iranian and not some smartass college kid spoofing Iranians. Its so much funnier if you are a real Iranian. If this is the vanguard of the Iranian naval defense forces, we should have strafed the coast of Iran years ago, just for the cool lighting effects of setting these craft on fire. Wait!! Maybe they're supposed to be decoys to lure ships within range of coastal guns.

My uncle Jed built one of those a couple of years back with an 56' Ford, 72' Cessna, a couple of aluminum canoes, and an old Winchester repeater. It is about time they caught up!

my Dad worked in the middle east in the 80's. He was invited to view the unvieling of some new "warships" the King of Saudi had just bought. They were basically speed boats with guns tied to them lol. Not just that but 1 of them hit the gas with out being untied and pulled the dock with the VIP guests into the water. The driver of the boat was then beaten with flip flops by the guests on the shore. Classic
