Iran unveils squadrons of flying boats

Iran's Defense Ministry released photos of what it says are its new radar-evading flying boats, the Bavar 2.

Iran unveiled three squadrons of new flying boats on Tuesday, Iranian news agencies reported.

The craft, dubbed the Bavar 2, is armed with a machine gun and carries surveillance cameras, according to a report from the Iranian Student News Agency.

Video: Watch boats soar

"Islamic Republic of Iran is one of the few countries which managed to design, build and use flying boats in a short time," said Defense Minister Brig. Gen. Ahmad Vahidi, who oversaw the delivering of the aircraft at the Bandar Abbas naval facility on the Persian Gulf near the Strait of Hormuz.

The delivery comes as Iran celebrates its Week of Sacred Defense, which commemorates its eight-year-long resistance to the 1980 Iraqi invasion, according to the Fars News Agency.

The flying boats look like one Iran used during Persian Gulf war games in April 2006. Media reports from the time include a video of a flying boat taking off.

After those 2006 reports, bloggers poked fun at Iran’s so-called stealth technology, saying the flying boat looked like something anyone could buy in kit form from mechanical magazine ads.

A soldier defending his country is not a coward.

A puppet government controlled by clerics that's afraid of free speech and free elections, that's cowardice.

People who fight rigged elections and die for fairness and freedom are the brave ones.

Sadly, in Iran, there's no lack of cowards.

On a positive note, there are plenty of brave people. They just need to act and they need help..

I see, debate on women's rights, ok. In the U.S. women can vote. They don't have to meet a prescribed clothing standard under the guise of modesty set forth by a bunch of clerics who are so old they can't remember what a woman looks like. Women can drive and they can vote. Here and in Israel! Wow! What does the Arab and Persian brand of Islam offer them? The status of property equivalent to a cow where they are only for having the children of some filthy pig 25 years older than they are. I suppose for you this would be paradise. How about the political process. I agree all politicians are liars and they use that to their advantage to get elected and we get to protest here without getting shot. In Iran, it's labeled as subversion, a crime against the state (Moronic Clerics) and you get shot. Enjoy your 12th century paradise, General!

To all of you misinformed individuals that don't think that the Muslim world is
capable of holding their own, you're sadly mistaken! You are truly ignorant if you think Iran doesn't have the intelligence, creativity,or technology to create a functional and effective weapon! If that was the case, it wouldn't be any worries about they're nuclear program! By the way, I don't think Isreal has a chance without the help of the U.S.!

Oh, so, Iran must be showing off these masterful pieces of weaponry in order to divert us from their real military backbone technology? And your wrong. Israel can easily handle whatever problems come their way. The U.S. funds and supplies their military after all.

Not to be an ass but the most capable aircraft that Iran has is the F-14 Tomcat fighters it bought from the U.S. before the Shah was thrown out of power. The F-14, while a fine fighter in it's day, is now antiquated technology. Sure, if there's a decent pilot behind the stick it may still be effective, but it can't handle the technology out there today.

Also, you're sadly misinformed about Israel. I hate to say it but, given their record of handing out ass whoopin to all comers in the middle east, I don't think Iran would stand a chance in a straight up one-on-one fight with Israel using conventional means. Iran would have it's ass handed to it. Why do you all have a problem with Israel anyway? What did they do to you? NOTHING!

As for ill feelings towards the Iranian people, most Americans have no problem with Iranians. Only a with the puppet Government whose strings are being pulled by zealot clerics who refuse to move into the modern age (no pun intended towards your float planes) and join with the rest of humanity to move forward.

Are Americans arrogant? I suppose? Have you ever seen an interview with Ahmadina-however the hell you spell his name? That is one arrogant little turd.

I'm totally baffelled too as to whether mister Mehdi General Dr Bad is a real Iranian or just some smartass college kid spoofing Iranians. I like to think that he's real because it puts him right in line with the flying boat technology. It makes me think that any war with Iran would be an easier walkover than the two Iraq Gulf wars – by far. If we took down these clowns, the youth and intellectuals would bring the country into the modern era and never look back.

Didn't Glenn Curtiss develope this idea about 100 years ago? A larger version of this flew across the Atlantic in 1919... the US Navy's NC-4. Iran is once again behind the rest of the world... as usual.

Catalina flying boats run by TWA(?) had regular flight service to Australia and Pacific islands in the 1930s. Amazing when you realize that the Wright brothers first flight was 1910.
