Iran unveils squadrons of flying boats

Iran's Defense Ministry released photos of what it says are its new radar-evading flying boats, the Bavar 2.

Iran unveiled three squadrons of new flying boats on Tuesday, Iranian news agencies reported.

The craft, dubbed the Bavar 2, is armed with a machine gun and carries surveillance cameras, according to a report from the Iranian Student News Agency.

"Islamic Republic of Iran is one of the few countries which managed to design, build and use flying boats in a short time," said Defense Minister Brig. Gen. Ahmad Vahidi, who oversaw the delivering of the aircraft at the Bandar Abbas naval facility on the Persian Gulf near the Strait of Hormuz.

The delivery comes as Iran celebrates its Week of Sacred Defense, which commemorates its eight-year-long resistance to the 1980 Iraqi invasion, according to the Fars News Agency.

The flying boats look like one Iran used during Persian Gulf war games in April 2006. Media reports from the time include a video of a flying boat taking off.

After those 2006 reports, bloggers poked fun at Iran’s so-called stealth technology, saying the flying boat looked like something anyone could buy in kit form from mechanical magazine ads.

On a more interesting note, check out the old Russian ekranoplans. Perhaps Iran is slowly working to this goal – kinda like strapping a few barrels together as afirst step toward a missile cruiser. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=2200021317530929051#

They are now training secret Iranian pilots that are able to peddle these things extremely fast, while simultaneously holding steady the hand-held sling shot. (with 2 exceptions. One who was extremely uncomfortable on the Banana Seat, and the other who's pants leg got caught in the chain... Co-pilots have already been made effecient at dropping the stones and pebbles into the slings during flight, allowing for rapid-fire of the vessels primary weapon. An amazing feat while pulling .005 G's

While this may be one of the most useless military inventions of all time, I will admit that they're pretty neat. I'd take one.

These are what are known as WIG vehicles and they are built to fly very close to the water using ground effects. The old USSR had several of them, but much larger, which they used as transports on in-land seas and lakes. These WIG craft move very fast, close to the water making them very difficult targets to see and hit. A small squadron of them outfitted with anti-ship missiles could be very dangerous. However, they do not do well in bad weather and flying them at night would require very sophisticated ground avoidance radar.

How easy would it be to add a missle to this and use it against our ships.

Think outside the envelope asks: "How easy would it be to add a missle to this and use it against our ships."

      Answer, exceedingly easy.

Uh...the existing missile threat to all shipping has absolutely NOTHING to do with these "flying boats". We DO realize that, don't we?
