Student's apparent suicide linked to webcast of sexual encounter

On the evening of September 19, Rutgers University student Dharun Ravi is believed to have sent a message by Twitter about his roommate, Tyler Clementi.

"Roommate asked for the room till midnight. I went into molly's room and turned on my webcam. I saw him making out with a dude. Yay."

Ravi, 18, of Plainsboro, New Jersey, surreptitiously placed the camera in their dorm room and broadcast video of Clementi's sexual encounter on the internet, the Middlesex County prosecutor's office said. Ravi tried to use the webcam again on two days later, on September 21.

"Anyone with iChat, I dare you to video chat me between the hours of 9:30 and 12. Yes it's happening again," Ravi is believed to have tweeted.

The next day, Clementi was dead.

New Jersey authorities said he apparently committed suicide by jumping off the George Washington Bridge, which spans the Hudson River between New
Jersey and New York. A law enforcement source told CNN that Clementi's wallet
and cell phone were found on the bridge.

A week later, the New York City Police harbor unit recovered the body of an unidentified male from the Hudson River. Thursday, authorities were trying to determine if it was Clementi's body.

Love how all the comments will be 'oh that poor boy oh goodness it's a shame those boys did this to him' yet the people posting will be the same people who make gays feel unwanted in the first place.

Sadly Mister Chorf, you are probably correct. People will talk a good game, but the reality is that there's just not enough genuine love & acceptance in this world. Too many spiteful, jealous, loveless creatures who just want to destroy one another. Just look at Jeff ^ 😦

I do feed horrible for him, and having a lot of gay friends and family members, I would definitely NOT be someone who would make gay people "feel unwanted" as "Mister Chorf" stated. I think society's treatment of people in the LGBT community is absolutely horrendous.

I can't believe I found this story on a Philippine news website and had to back-track to find the US story. The older I get, the more it sinks in that the vast majority of people suck, and the media just about 99% sucks.

It's his problem for jumping off the bridge... He killed him self... No blame should be put on the students... They never told him to jump off the bridge and kill his self... Secondly he should have seeker some psych help with his hormone inbalancment.. Those ppl should be accepted but they need some help to get them back to the norms of life.. Boy is attracted to a girl and viceversa... What they do is sick and it's an indication of a hormone illness that needs medical attention just like another disease... So seek a doctor and don't jump off the bridge but at the same time don't black the 2 kids

This was a young man who was obviously struggling (with himself, his demons, however you want to phrase it). Being young, he was probably not yet secure with himself and probably had not shared his personal life with many (read family and close family friends). The thought that this was out there before he was ready to open himself up to others was probably simply too overwhelming.

What his room mate did was a blatant invasion of privacy and could easily be counted as defamation of character. Think about it, what if there were cameras recording our own secrets and someone put it out there for the whole world to see.

Prayers out to his family and those close to him.

Stop being a drama queen! Everyone is in agreement of poor taste and judgement involved by all parties. Those want privacy go to a hotel room or acquire living arrangement for single occupancy. When you live with room mate(s) there is no privacy especially in a dormitory. Both have equal and legal access to this living space at any given time. He(the Roomate) could have acces the room with his key anytime. You people are creating laws and manipulating the law to appease a distaste for what happen.

David's post has to be satire. No-one can be that stupid. Sasha Baron Cohen himself would be proud of some of this writing: "They never told him to jump off the bridge and kill his self", "seeker some psych help with his hormone inbalancment", "Boy is attracted to a girl and viceversa". Actually, I could quote his entire post.
It's red-neck satire at its best. The alternative is that David's parents were related and did a little too much necking at a family thanksgiving dinner, resulting in young David ending up with a little "hormone inbalacment" of his own.

Does the person who committed suicide has some responsibility and accountabilty for his acts?

  8. Idiot Kids Need To Think

A roommate who sets-up someone having a private moment on a webcam, then goes into another dorm room and accesses the webcam to "out" or "embarrass" the room-mate is indeed a violation of privacy. When he walked-out of the dorm room leaving his room-mate alone; the room-mate left behind HAS an expectation of privacy not to be set-up, intruded upon, or offered-up to the internet for someone else's amusement.

Criminal and kids need to learn how to think critically and how your immature actions affect caused this kid to kill himself...his blood will be on your hands and conscience for your entire life. You'd think people would raise their kids and have an open-eye and mind to what they could do. No your precious little darlings are not angels; they do stupid things when they don't think or are taught better.

@idiot you must have been a fly in the wall. The webcam appeared to be remotely activated. How does it differ from those busted on "Cheaters"? It would be called entertainment but here its crimminal. Please stop the relativism: Truth and ettiquette doesn't exist and anything goes! The comments here are public stoners: throwing their opinions at a passing article event!

I think it is stupid for people to do this to others. Everyone has to just mind their own business. It is just not right at all. How would they like it if their own secrets were revieled? They would not like it at all. So im just gonna say "JUST MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS!!" Your gonna have bad consequences in the end.

I had my original comment blocked for some reason. Maybe mein furor disagreed with my point of view. Gay or straight shouldn't matter in this case. The reality obsessed media in this country has made it seem ok to invade other's lives. Kids are dumb enough to begin with. Sorry if you disagree CNN

Hey Jeff my bro is a Staff Sergeant and did a tour over there. I'm joining next year. The sacrifice you are making is great but you chose that profession. You should be more upset that you're protecting snobby little teens that make other people's lives hell.
