Phillies' Halladay no-hits Reds in playoff opener

Halladay no-hitter came in the first postseason start of his career.

Roy Halladay of the Phillies pitched the second no-hitter in Major League Baseball postseason history on Wednesday as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Cincinnati Reds 4-0 in their National League Division Series opener in Philadelphia.

Halladay, making his first postseason start in his 12-year career, struck out eight and walked one. He threw 104 pitches, 79 for strikes.  Read the boxscore at SI.com

The only blemish on his night was a two-out walk on a 3-2 pitch to Jay Bruce in the Reds' half of the fifth inning.

There were at least two hard hit balls against Halladay. Reds pitcher Travis Wood lined to right in the third. In the fourth inning, Reds star Joey Votto hit a hard grounder between second and third base that Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins fielded and threw to first for the out.

On May 29, Halladay threw a perfect game against the Florida Marlins, the 20th perfect game in MLB history. On the night he struck out 11 batters.

The only other no-hitter in playoffs history was a perfect game thrown by the Yankees Don Larsen, who won Game 5 of the 1956 World Series, defeating the Brooklyn Dodgers 2-0.

Ramon Hernandez popped out to second to start the 9th inning. Pinch-hitter Miguel Cairo popped out to third baseman Wilson Valdez in foul territory.

Brandon Phillips hit a slow roller about 10 feet in front of the plate that catcher Carlos Ruiz fielded and fired to first baseman Ryan Howard for the final out.

"I felt like we got in a groove early [with catcher Carlos Ruiz]," Halladay said.

"This is what you come here for. You come in you try to chip in and be a part of [the winning tradition]."

It's surreal. It really is. To be able to go out and have a game like that. It's a dream come true.

In Game 2 of the series, the Phillies will start Roy Oswalt against Cincinnati’s Bronson Arroyo on Friday at 6:07 p.m. ET

This year there should be an asterisk required for this "no-hitter" : *This "no hitter" was performed in the absence of Umpire Jim Joyce, who would have disallowed the final out.

Jim Joyce screwed up a Perfect Game, not a np-hitter. There is a huge difference. Galarraga didn't walk anyone.

James: it was not TSN giving him the name. Philly Fans were holding signs with Mr. Doc-tober throughout the entire game. They also have the nickname for their big 3 pitchers on a few signs H2O (Halliday, Hamels and Oswalt).

    Great nickname Philly Fans.

Pablum Lovers: If it doesn't matter to you, why did you read it and then feel the need to comment on it?

There is nothing wrong with a little reprieve from death, destruction, political and economic unrest. Congrats to CNN for giving baseball and the 'Doc' some respect. I'm sure things will get back to 'normal' soon!

Just maybe the Reds fans should be excited. Don Larson through a perfect game against the Dodgers in 1956 World Series and the Dodgers won the series!

The Dodgers lost the series in seven games in 1956. They won the series in 1955, Brooklyn's only championship in nine WS appearances. Try doing some research – it only takes about 30 seconds...

One walk.... just one walk kept him from being the second in pitching a perfect game! Definitely CONGRATS ARE IN ORDER.... a no hitter is the next best thing to a perfect game.... he just built his nitche in baseball history...

CNN, It's tough to care about baseball when you know that your gov't and media have been lying to you for your whole life on EARTH. Don't you think it is kind of weird that the Airport in Mongolia was just shutdown because of The "ufos" or our ancestors communicating with us in the skies. The only news on youtube is about First Contact and our Ancestors who've arrived to earth. and the 150 mile spaceship currently on it's way here. What is going on? Are you really not aware of this stuff? You Mainstreams totally ignored all the Truth information over the past years. A bit weird that the most occuring news on here isn't about Anunnaki, our ancestors in Sirius, Orion, Arcturus, Andromeda etc. What is going on? How long do all of us in the know have to pretend dumb?

As a Braves fan, I cringed through most of his outing, but at the end I was pulling for him. I'm NL all the way, so I'll be rooting for them in the WS anyway, barring a miracle that is. GG halladay, just wish you could of saved that for the yanks LOL.
