N.C. Republican calls gays 'fruitloops' in e-mail

Rep. Larry Brown is in hot water over a "fruitloops" e-mail.

A gay rights group is asking people to flood a North Carolina state representative's office with cereal after the Republican referred to gays as "queers" and "fruitloops" in an e-mail to other lawmakers.

Rep. Larry Brown, a Republican, was replying to an e-mail that state House Minority Leader Paul Stam sent to members of his caucus. That message, dated September 27, discussed Democratic House Speaker Joe Hackney receiving an award from Equality NC, according to Hackney spokesman Bill Holmes.

The e-mail string, which Holmes provided to CNN, had about 60 recipients. Brown's response consisted of two sentences: "I hope all the queers are thrilled to see him [Hackney]. I'm sure there will be a couple of legislative fruitloops there in the audience."

Messages left at Brown's legislative office were not returned Thursday morning. The cell number listed on his official state page is not working, and a message sent to Brown's e-mail address was not returned.

Brown is running unopposed for re-election this year.

The e-mail was made public recently when Equality NC Executive Director Ian Palmquist received a copy of it. "I was pretty shocked to see a legislator using that language," Palmquist said.

"Rep. Brown needs to apologize, but we haven't received any contact from him, not a word. It's offensive, but I really don't think he reflects what most North Carolinians think about gay people."

Stam told News 14 North Carolina that Brown's language was inappropriate but that he was not "the speech police."

Free speech cuts both ways. Immorality gets called out; it's a free country. The gays must not really be all that comfortable with their behavior if they have to demand acceptance by everyone.

It's clear that he who screams the loudest is usually the one doing the thing they are screaming about. This is why gay youth is committing suicide.

When so called grown-ups whom represents all the people “RIGHT” ??????? acts worst than a 10 year old.

People grow-up and let people who have nothing to do with you live as they let you live.

Let every child know they will not be harmed because of inane people who have such fear they have to strike out at others.

He does not have to use that language to prove that he is a southern bigot. This guy proves that nothing good comes for the south or ever will!

"Brown is running unopposed for re-election this year"

It would be simply amazing if someone organized a write-in campaign and got Toucan Sam elected to the legislature instead of this guy!

I think that the "old man" was rude in his wording and his opinions about gay's. Whether he should be an elected official is to doubt, considering that his language is quite crude. The one thing that really hurts me to see as a "Christian" who does not support the gay life stlye is the fact that everyone thinks Republicans = Christians. This is not true, a true follower of Christ, should not be getting hate messages due to the harsh words that he speaks. This is a false representation of what a Christian should look like. Sorry everybody...

Bet u this idiot is a fruit loop too, hate to profile or stereotype but look at him, especially his ugly photo. IM GAY, served in the Navy for 20 years, received 6 Navy Commendations, 6 Navy Achievement Medal, 8 Good Conduct Medals, served in 1st gulf war, and several other commendations, not to mention Sailor of the Year (twice) Sailors of the Month and Quarter. Served my country honorably and serving my country as a tax payer....Am a Democratic and not on the Obama bandwagon, nor for undeserving Republicans like this hypocrite serving us. He must go, just like the rest of the racist politicians who do not faithful serve all Americans. I served this Nation as a Mexican-American, a US citizen, in the Armed Forces not for me or any president or politician but for the American people, my country Land of the Free! This bigot needs to be thrown out of office, and any other politician who believes this way too. Nothing there is so much profiling, hatred and racism in American all the so called leaders of American practice and preach this, sad but true. It all starts at the TOP and trickles down.....Shame on him and Shame on the Government. Sad part about this too, its in the media too, just watch and listen to the various news programs and news talk shows – shame ONLY in AMERICA. Its no wonder that other countries hate us, cant blame them at all. But I still proud to be an American – true of the Red, White and Blue. But I served TWENTY YEARS to protect this bigots freedom and rights as an AMERICAN, sorry I did!

I agree that he's wrong and there should be consequences when sending such hateful words in a work email. But I don't think that the gay rights group should encourage wasting our cereal in order to "send him a message". In addition to Gay Rights, Hunger and Starvation are major problems in America.

Just how clueless does someone have to be not to know that anything written down (whether on hard-copies or the internet) will be read by others outside the 'circle'. This fool is in Congress....great....

When I was a kid, we called gay people things a lot worse than fruit loops. Fruit Loops sounds pretty nice compared to what we used to call them. Really, getting all upset over being called a silly name is exactly the pathetic sort of thing I'd expect from gay sissies. oops... sissy... did I say that? I meant pansy... er uh. whimp? or fruitcake? wait that's kinda like fruitloop. Hold on... isn't GAY one of the mean names we used to call them? Now they seem to like it. Perhaps they'll get to like fruitloop, since they clearly don't have any self esteem anyway.
