N.C. Republican calls gays 'fruitloops' in e-mail

Rep. Larry Brown is in hot water over a "fruitloops" e-mail.

A gay rights group is asking people to flood a North Carolina state representative's office with cereal after the Republican referred to gays as "queers" and "fruitloops" in an e-mail to other lawmakers.

Rep. Larry Brown, a Republican, was replying to an e-mail that state House Minority Leader Paul Stam sent to members of his caucus. That message, dated September 27, discussed Democratic House Speaker Joe Hackney receiving an award from Equality NC, according to Hackney spokesman Bill Holmes.

The e-mail string, which Holmes provided to CNN, had about 60 recipients. Brown's response consisted of two sentences: "I hope all the queers are thrilled to see him [Hackney]. I'm sure there will be a couple of legislative fruitloops there in the audience."

Messages left at Brown's legislative office were not returned Thursday morning. The cell number listed on his official state page is not working, and a message sent to Brown's e-mail address was not returned.

Brown is running unopposed for re-election this year.

The e-mail was made public recently when Equality NC Executive Director Ian Palmquist received a copy of it. "I was pretty shocked to see a legislator using that language," Palmquist said.

"Rep. Brown needs to apologize, but we haven't received any contact from him, not a word. It's offensive, but I really don't think he reflects what most North Carolinians think about gay people."

Stam told News 14 North Carolina that Brown's language was inappropriate but that he was not "the speech police."

What an idiot. He should know that the fruit loop is Dupont Circle, not the gay population at large. Does this guy even go to DC or does he just mail it in?

This is absurd and you wonder why everyone all over the world look at us laugh their butts off, calling us pathetic. Our skins have become so thin, if you say boo to someone they cry civil rights, gay rights violations, call CNN for a story, throw a big stinky fits or kill themselves. Toughen up America, there are more pressing things going on in the world then name calling. Such as people trying to Kill and Bankrupt us over in the Middle East. Own government taking away more of our hard earned money and freedoms each and every day. Do you really think some terrorist will say he's sorry for hurting your feelings before he blows you away, get a reality check people. Maybe you are a bunch fruitloops.

We aren't going away, so maybe you need to toughen up yourself. We have the right to campaign for relief of the injustices against us. Cry all you want–we are here until we win.

I love the trailer park people telling us on how the liberal media is trying to focus on the gay agenda when they are the ones who blindly follow the ignorant. At least liberals make decisions for themselves where as you do as your told. baaaahhhh

Nobody should be surprised. North Carolina is at the bottom of the state list for education along with South Carolina and Georgia. Poor education = Ignorant people. It's that simple.

So I thought "name calling" was no longer an acceptable way to communicate? And we expect our kids not to be bully's? Personally I think this man should step down gracefully or be removed. There is no room in Gov't for people who refer to others like this. I wonder what he calls African American's, Mexicans, Italians, etc? In Gov't ESPECIALLY we need to have a no tolerance clause for these types. We should model ourselves after the armed forces where this type of talk is frowned upon and can cause sanctions. I am so sick of people like this that get a news article about them, get away with it and continue to talk that way.
