N.C. Republican calls gays 'fruitloops' in e-mail

Rep. Larry Brown is in hot water over a "fruitloops" e-mail.

A gay rights group is asking people to flood a North Carolina state representative's office with cereal after the Republican referred to gays as "queers" and "fruitloops" in an e-mail to other lawmakers.

Rep. Larry Brown, a Republican, was replying to an e-mail that state House Minority Leader Paul Stam sent to members of his caucus. That message, dated September 27, discussed Democratic House Speaker Joe Hackney receiving an award from Equality NC, according to Hackney spokesman Bill Holmes.

The e-mail string, which Holmes provided to CNN, had about 60 recipients. Brown's response consisted of two sentences: "I hope all the queers are thrilled to see him [Hackney]. I'm sure there will be a couple of legislative fruitloops there in the audience."

Messages left at Brown's legislative office were not returned Thursday morning. The cell number listed on his official state page is not working, and a message sent to Brown's e-mail address was not returned.

Brown is running unopposed for re-election this year.

The e-mail was made public recently when Equality NC Executive Director Ian Palmquist received a copy of it. "I was pretty shocked to see a legislator using that language," Palmquist said.

"Rep. Brown needs to apologize, but we haven't received any contact from him, not a word. It's offensive, but I really don't think he reflects what most North Carolinians think about gay people."

Stam told News 14 North Carolina that Brown's language was inappropriate but that he was not "the speech police."

I am so glad there are people within these offices that are faithful to report these emails. BTW, his pic makes me think he is a closeted fruitloop... but most of them are as we have seen in the past...

This country is becoming a group of sensitive crybabies. Everyone gets bullied, it's called humanity. Deal with it instead of blaming everyone else.

Please tell that to the 5 (or is it now 6) families of children who have committed suicide as a result of being bullied. "It's just humanity, kids. Take it." Bullying has NEVER been acceptable.

God destroyed Sodom and Gamorah because of men laying with men and beast. Yes he should not use name calling to get his point across he should have said gay people. Then this wouldnt have set people off and his point would have came across a little better. Why do people believe in evolution? Who created the big bang? who created the cell that evolved? Do u still believe in something u cant explain? Why not believe in a higher power than urselves?

That is only an assumption. The prophet Ezekiel states the REAL reason for their destruction and does not mention anything about anyone being gay. Go and read your Bible and learn the truth–it says that S&G were destroyed because of greed and not tending to their poor. That would put most Republicans on the judgment chopping block...

What would you expect from someone in a State, where the N word was as common as water until at least '93?!

I notice my comments were censored. I would expect this from a country run by non-whites. That is okay. Whites will overcome non-whites and win in the end.

F: Is that why your shot callers take orders from Eme? Don't worry, you'll be back soon getting what you want and able to say you don't have a choice.

there is also a facebook campaign to support the Central NC foodbank, in which you can donate, and send either an "In honor" , or " In memorium" email to Rep. Brown. Mine read,
    My MEMORIAL note was:
"Representative Brown, I just wanted to let you know that this fruitloop cares.
Do you understand the national bullying crisis regarding youg gay teens?
the blood of gay teen suicides is on the hands of people like you.
Please understand and respe...ct the platform you hold as a representative of my state."

In recent history, the Republicans who holler loudest against gays are the ones who make passes in secret.
