Social Security benefits won't increase for second straight year

Social Security beneficiaries will see no increase in their benefit checks next year, the federal government said on Friday.

For more than 58 million seniors and other Social Security beneficiaries, 2011 will mark the second in a row without an inflation adjustment.

Inflation has been low in the past two years because of the recession. The Bureau of Labor Statistics on Friday morning reported prices were up only slightly over last year.

The last Social Security inflation adjustment was in 2009: Beneficiaries got a higher-than-normal 5.8% increase because of a temporary spike in energy prices in the third quarter of 2008.

Soon after, however, energy prices plummeted. Then the bottom fell out of the economy and by the third quarter of 2009 overall price levels had fallen 2.1% from the same period a year earlier. That meant no increase in 2010 Social Security benefit checks.

I can't believe someone would write that illegal aliens AREN'T getting welfare, YOU IGNORAMOUS, just go into any state welfare agency and ask any Mexican looking person(let me hear you say it) to see proof their a citizen and you'll get your proof. One; you better speak Spanish because it'll be doubtful if they can and lets not forget about health services, illegals can walk into any government backed hospital and get tax payer funded health care. Ahhh they have to wait until all paying customers are served, they should be put in concentration camps and fed soup and bread until their own governments can support them.

Concentration camps?! This isn't the 1940s and I would think enough lessons have been learned already about this type of inhumanity to know not to permit it to occur again.

Obviously the people making these kinds of decisions have never had to rely on social security for survival. Social Security as it is now doesn't pay the rent never mind medicine, food and the other necessities that our elderly need. They didn't get a cost of living this year and now not next year either. I'm not on social security, so I'm speaking objectively, but I will say that these politicians are so out of touch with our seniors that they need to go. Vote them all out, it's time for term limits.

For all you ill informed people out there here is a fact about welfare. You need a state ID/Drivers license and a social security card in order to get benefits. They don't just hand out that stuff to anyone who walks through the door including illegal aliens. If you are convicted of certain crimes you are not eligible for welfare. The department of human services does not buy people cars whether they are citizens or not. No wonder the government gets away with lying to everybody. Half of us are too stupid to tie our shoes and believe every lame rumor we hear online. Either way there are no increases in benefits because there is no money. Wonder why we have no money? Oh that's right $1.4 trillion is tied up by a bunch of rich guys on wall st.

yes illegals get freebies. I worked in healthcare and education in southern california for many years.... they qualify through their anchor babies which they have MANY

they get the free healthcare the minute they get pregnant. they then get the housing and food through their anchor baby(ies). They intentiailly don't get married since then the father would have to take financial responsiblity.

they don't bother trying to get legal since then they can be traced. they don't bother with auto insurance, health- they just show up at the emergency room if they get sick and give a fake name. they can't be refused.

my 'friend' personally told me about her friends mom using somebody else's soc sec # to get a monthly soc sec check.

When I was a bit younger Saturday Night Live made fun of Al Gore for wanting a social security "lock box". In hindsight that idea now looks brilliant. I say keep adding funds to social security until it has a decent surplus that can accommodate benefit increases and new retirees. This $ should not be touched for any reason and any politician that does should be kicked out immediately. All the American people do is pass blame instead of suggesting ways to fix the problems. Half of people's arguments aren't even based on any real facts to back up your theory. Washington is much worse at the blame game by far, but has that worked?

It's my money. It came oout of my pay check and I want it back! Social security isn't welfare, it's my right. It is for disabled and elderly. The gpvernment borrowed my money for years and years, and when the time comes I expcet a return, period. Rich or poor, you payed into it and it should be paid back to you when the time comes. Of course if they keep raising the retirement age alot of people will never see the money and I guess it goes to pay for a big government party?? To all Americans.... Stay healthy and stay alive, rich or poor, retirement funds or not, you payed for it, demand your proper dues!

Cindy, you are correct IMHO. Social security is meant for people who cannot work, period. We all pay taxes to still be able to give these people an income.
Fraud is however rampant and it is the frauds (i.e.: people that can work but are unwilling or just plain lazy) that cause people to think about wether social security should be abolished or lowered.

I think the government should keep on supporting the unable/ elderly and instead of trying to save money by lowering that income, they should invest in finding ways to point out the people who abuse/ misuse the social security. It costs a bit more now but will eventually save money as those who really need it will receive it, and noone else.

@ Jill: fraud is different than the government openly handing money out to illegal immigrants. I think with all the social programs our country does have it is unacceptable for anyone to be on welfare longer than 5 years. Poor people get free school, food stamps, cash benefits, shelter expenses, child care, medicaid and emergency utility services. Force these lifetime sponges to go to school and get into the workforce or their benefits will be cut off. A college grad makes enough $ to pay back into the system. Many politicians need poor people that they can point to when election season arrives. There are 40 million people on food stamps now and there's no talk from Washington about making outsourcing illegal to bring the jobs back. All you hear is how food stamps are an acceptable form of "stimulus". The rich are in bed with the politicians and need more slaves here to work crappy minimum wage jobs. That's my theory.

I disagree with post 17 and 18 – Obama won't be a one termer – this is not his fault. All this was started by Republicans the last 8 yrs. I hate to say it that not getting COLA increases is nothing compared to what the RepubliKKKans want do. They're now advocating doing away with Social Security all together. And doing away with minimum wage. Obama is the best thing for this country in a long time. Bush dug us a hole so deep its gonna take 6 terms to get us out. RepubliKKKans are a disgrace – they're subversive – they don't care about you. Wake the hell up!

Teabaggers should be rejoicing! How can anyone be angry over this? Social security is a socialist program and people should be glad that our tax dollars will NOT support a raise for the free loaders that are getting more out of the system than they paid in! Now if we could just get rid of that other socialist program... medicare! Hey maybe after the november elections we will! LOL

Oh Lord~I hate to get started on this~in a way~but~in another way everybody has somehow GOT to REALLY understand what is going on BEFORE you vote Nov.2nd!~1st of all~DONT blame Pres.O for ANYTHING TO DO WITH SOC.SEC.COLA raise!~HE has NOTHING TO DO WITH THAT! 1st~CONGRESS determines what happens~when the normal raise does NOT kick in~what I mean is that since it has not automatically come in the last 2yrs~because of the screwy way the economy is acting~THEN CONGRESS COULD HAVE OVERIDDEN THAT AND MADE SURE ALL SENIORS DID GET A BADLY NEEDED RAISE~but~there is NO WAY THE REPUBS~who want to STOP Soc.Sec.will ever agree to give us the raise now and the Dems cant do it on their own ~The President has NO control over the SS rasise!

@ Brian who posted at 2:10pm – are you serious? Than again l think you are. You're one of millions of other brain washed people in this country nowadays. You want to do away with social Security and Medicare. Where did you come up with that there's no way you had enough wattage in your brain to think of it on your own. And you called those programs Socialist. Please – if anything you're a follower – you heard that word on tv – you called SS recipients free loaders – clowns like you are the ones destroying this country right now.

Every civilized major country on this Earth takes care of its citizens. Most you can go to any hospital or doctor you want just walk in no charge. Thats the way it should be. Thats the ultimate in citenzenship. Lot of these countries you can go to school free up thru the University. Always look out for your fellow man always! And always look out for your fellow American – don't let yourself get screwed up son, by people on tv.

First things l learned and was taught - respect your flag – love your country – back your President. Very simple – learn it.
