Social Security benefits won't increase for second straight year

Social Security beneficiaries will see no increase in their benefit checks next year, the federal government said on Friday.

For more than 58 million seniors and other Social Security beneficiaries, 2011 will mark the second in a row without an inflation adjustment.

Inflation has been low in the past two years because of the recession. The Bureau of Labor Statistics on Friday morning reported prices were up only slightly over last year.

The last Social Security inflation adjustment was in 2009: Beneficiaries got a higher-than-normal 5.8% increase because of a temporary spike in energy prices in the third quarter of 2008.

Soon after, however, energy prices plummeted. Then the bottom fell out of the economy and by the third quarter of 2009 overall price levels had fallen 2.1% from the same period a year earlier. That meant no increase in 2010 Social Security benefit checks.

Sherry please stop with all the CAPS. I try reading your posts and end up getting a headache. Chill out and release your caps lock button. All the normal people in this country are caught in a partisan tug o war. The entire political system needs to be reformed by honest and intelligent people. You can't have a bunch of lazy people popping out kids on the government dime no more than having the government turning a blind eye to poor people in need. Everyone wants rich people to be controlled with an iron fist, but asking the poor to get an education is asking too much. Everyone has a duty to chip in unless they're disabled then I'm all in favor of charitable programs. Obama is not horrible but he's missing the big picture I think. People elected a guy who didn't even finish his first term as a senator before running for president. Half the time he never even voted on an issue. Look it up.

I work with many "illegals". They are hardworking taxpayers believe or not. No one talks one of the biggest cover ups in America. They make up fake social security numbers to be able to work and those social security numbers are TAXED. News Flash! ILLEGALS CAN'T FILE TAXES OR GET SOCIAL SECURITY BENEFITS! So where the hell is their $$$ going? We have millions of illegals in this country forking over BILLIONS a year to "social security". Why do you think Republicans don't want immigration reform?

Those people who think social security is a socialist program should be allowed to opt out of paying for it. Then when you retire you can be on your own. Let's see how many people choose to do that though. Those who criticize social programs will always get in line for their social security check.

ANOTHER IMPORTANT THING TO KNOW IS THAT SOC.SEC.DOES*NOT!**RAISE THE DEFICIT!!~SS IS SELF~FUNDING~PAID FOR BY YOU ,ALL YOUR WORKING LIFE!~THEY HAVE BORROWED FROM IT OVER THE YEARS~BUT~THERE IS A HUGE BACKUP FOR THE SS FUND~SOMETHING ON ORDER OF 2.3Trillion dollars RIGHT NOW~and~DOES EVERYBODY UNDERSTAND THAT THERE IS A"CAP"OF ABOUT$106,000 DOLLARS ON PAYING F.I.C.A.TAXES TO THE FUND?~ SS&MEDICARE~AND THAT RAISING THAT CAP~JUST A LITTLE BIT~NOT MUCH~SO THAT PEOPLE EARNING SAY~UP TO$125,000 had TO KEEP PAYING FICA[and I agree there should actually be NO LIMIT~that ALL MONEY EARNED *SHOULD*BE SUBJECT TO THE FICA TAX] but~THAT EVEN RAISING THAT CAP SLIGHTLY WOULD FUND SOC.SEC.FOR FAR,FAR INTO THE FUTURE!~THERE IS NO REASON THAT IF~SOMEONE MAKING SAY,A MILLION DOLLARS A YR.SHOULD NOT PAY FOR SS PAST THE $106,00 MARK IF THEY EXPECT TO COLLECT A SOC.SEC.CHECK IN THE END!

I'll try to explain in my own way. Unfortunately this country and its ideals are under attack. Selfishness is the order of the day. Your example is on point milk and eggs are constantly going up – yet they can't give those people a COLA. Its all about looking out for #1. I live here in Los Angeles – l don't know if you head the story of how the Mayor of one of our suburb cities the Police Chief and the councilmen of that town (Bell) were paying themselves exorbitant salaries. The Mayor was making $800,000 a year twice what Obama makes – the Police Chief $400,000 – the council members over $160,000 a year.
This in a city of 44,000 residents – mainly blue collar working stiffs – average salary about $35,000 – they also found out the homeowners were getting overcharged on their property taxes big time – that is going to be refunded to them. After all the legalities are worked out. The good thing the Mayor and all the others were arrested – they're facing big sentences – good. The depressing thing they set the bail for the Mayor at $2 mil – he made bail crook.
I shared that story with you D Moore to give you a snap shot into whats going on out there, this is happening all over they just haven't been caught yet. Hang in there – Obama is gonna clean all this up it takes time.

SORRY~I will try to do better about the caps~ I am just so worried because I know an awful lot of people have no idea that they are actually voting to ruin their own lives and to destroy their own social securiy~thereby ending up with nothing to live on after they do work 50 years! I am scared for everybody who does not understand that, not for myself.

@D.Moore~that is what I am trying to do~help folks to understand so they do not vote away their own retirement future. As for not geeting the raise in SS last 2 yrs and medicine going up,and lots of other things~that is because the automactic raises set out in the soc.sec.law,had never come up against an economy free~falling so fast~not since SS was put in[which if folks would just think about THAT for a moment, would tell everyone what a bad&unusual ecomomy Pres.O came into office up against]~and at that point, where the raises did not kick in automatically, then Congress could fix it so we did get the raises anyway. But~the Dems could not vote it in all alone and the Republicans were certinly not going to help do it~because they feared that would make Pres.O look good! Anotherwards the Repubs would rather seniors had no medicine~or food,or anything~than they lose their chance to take Pres.O.~and the Dems down~they are that greedy&uncaring! That is why I am scared for eveybody who is being led"down the garden path "~until the Repubs get their vote

What CNN conveniently left out on TV a few minutes ago when announcing that there will be no Social Security COLA again for the 2nd year in a row is that military veterans are covered by the same policy. It's not just the elderly and social security. Disabled military veterans like myself on fixed incomes also will get no COLA again this year to their disability benefits. Military retirees will also get no COLA as well in their retainer pay. Social Security and Veteran's Administration disabled military veterans as well as retired military are all covered by the same corrupted policy.

And just think – there's Republican candidates out ther right now advocating doing away with Social Security altogether – and Medicare and minimum wage. This is gathering steam – like Sherri W.W. asserted in her post you just have to become more aware and don't let these people on tv decieve you. Our President will correct this its gonna take time – in the meantime don't let these slick willies blow smoke in your face – they're not looking out for your best interests its all about them, and Wall Street

Anytime you got people who would try and derail Universal health Care you're talking subversives. We're the only major country on the planet without universal health care for its citizens. The Only One! Hang in there it'll get better.

This is the second year in a row. I don't know about anyone else, but my cost of living has certainly increased. This is a load of b.s. There are 58 million ss recipients. Maybe we should use our voting power. Why don't we not vote? That should serve them all giving them just what they deserve,

I just dont know if most people realize that the same congressman&senators who would love to cut soc.sec.benefits.and medicare/medicade,that THEY get~not only the nice pension we provide, they get soc.sec.too~and they get the same healthcare the Repubs fought to deny all of US from getting!~plus most of their healthcare/medicine needs are pretty much all paid for~by who?~us,the taxpayers~the same ones who cannot always afford their own meds! And with the pension and social security,it is not likely they~or their spouse~will have to do without Hosp.care or medicine! /not only that~congress an senate~yes, the same ones who want US to work to age 70~they can retire at 55!with their pension~and age 50!~if they been inoffice at least 20yrs! But we have GOT to work because they cant afford for us to collect the soc.sec.that we already PAID for~and would like to reduce OUR checks, eventhough even at the very highest SS check there is~it is still just above poverty level!~and not many get the highest check~usually about half of that~well below poverty level!~and medicare costs are starting down for seniors in Jan.Becausef of the HealthCare Bill they want to repeal!

Ok my only point is that everyone is blaming the Republicans when the Dems still have the majority. I'm an independent who can see this for the political theatre that it is. They crammed through a health care plan so why not social security increases? We are all being played for fools and it's because Washington thinks it knows better. Cost of living and inflation should automatically be adjusted whether it's minimum wage or social security. When was the last time a Washington bureaucrat voted no for their own pay raise? I can't think of any.

I'm also not for universal health care because there are plenty of people who are capable of paying for themselves. Expanding medicaid and medicare is something I do favor so people can be a bit more choosy about their health care. Believe me the government could solve many problems, but I feel they are either inept or unwilling to do so. Notice how they use gays, race or abortion to divide us? Its a tactic that has worked before, but people are waking up. The media pits us all against each other too.

No~NO~all seniors Got To Vote!~For the Dems who will help us!~if you just stay home&dont vote all the crazies will get in for sure! Our voting power is ONLY good IF we USE it by VOTING~the ones who want to do all this to us~mostly Repub/TeaP~they hope you WILL stay home! Why?~because Seniors make up the majority of voters!Seniors have 1 of the biggest voting blocks in this country and the only way~ONLY way~these fools can get in is if we either Don`t vote~or vote for 1 of them,if they can keep us all fooled till after Nov 2nd!~Our voting rights are 1 of the most precious things we have~if All Seniors voted to keep these people Out,that want to destroy all we`ve worked for~if every Senior refused to let them get in~we have enough voting power that most of the ones that are"nuts"would be completely Done instantly!~no more polls would be needed if we USE OUR Powerto keep these people AWAY from our Soc.Sec.&all the rest they want to do to us! Our President is working FOR US~the middle class~we put him in~lets give the Dems the full 4yrs before we go nuts from what some REAL nuts are shouting at us.

@whitekong78~two things:1~the Dems havent had a majority in the Senate for a long time now~since they lost some of their long~time senators, including Sen.Kennedy. Thats the problem the last year~the Dems can get it thru the House but not thru the senate~the Repubs let the bills "die"in the senate~and they know a lot of people dont understand it,so they will blame the Dems while the Repubs laugh at how stupid the voters are! The only way Dems have gotten ANYTHING thru for long time,is to beg 2or3 senators to help them pass something they need~we need~like unemployment ins.and pay for teachers,Firemen&Police.Remember~Pres-Obama said a long time ago~"I can do it all~but I can`t do it alone!"and no president can do it all alone.Thats why Repubs have said"No"to everything~because they knew they could make him look bad,as if nothing was done! an actually, the Pres&Dems got a LOT of good stuff done for having to deal with those fools.~#2~Universal Health Care~we would still have to pay for it but then more yet would be covered and medicine available~and it would be a lot cheaper so no one would have to go without care.~or be ruinedby medical bills they cant pay.

This is a huge problem. They're withholding money that Elderly Americans need. These elderly people have worked for 30 years, have paid into the system for decades, so that when they get older that the money in which they put into the system, would be there for them. Now, the government is crying broke and that they don't have the money our seniors put into te system. However, the government is shelling out billions a year to pay for illegal immigrants health care, welfare, food stamps, their children, their childrens food, education, clothing, housing. These illegal immigrants have contributed nothing into the system, yet they are recieving our tax dollars, while the older generation who can no longer work is struggling..... This truly makes me sick.
