Blast kills 21 in China mine

A gas explosion Saturday killed at least 21 workers and 16 others were trapped at a coal mine in central China, authorities told state-run media.

Rescuers have retrieved 20 bodies so far, the official Xinhua news agency reported. The 16 trapped miners have been located but rescuers have to clear coal dust from the shaft in order to reach them.

China's State Administration of Work Safety said about 276 workers were underground in the mine in Henan province when the blast occurred. Of those, 239 escaped.

The same mine reported another explosion in August 2008, that killed 23 miners.

China has one of the world's deadliest records for miners, with poor safety standards accounting for thousands of deaths each year.

Problem is, a lot of these mines are operating illegally or skirting safety regulations with the aid of corrupt officials, from what I read. And China's rapid modernization is fed by coal. They can't go back. They can't even slow down, for fear of a popular revolt.

chinese govt. Arent getting pressure frpm the right places, we keep buying their cheap crap, this fuels incidents llike this.. Inspectors have partial ownership in most of the worst mines , if it wre not for world spotlight they would be worse. They die hundreds at a time, media is controlled there by the state, sorry but as a miner you get paid to take a hazardous job. Stand up for yourself there , and you disappear. As fuked up as things are, its good to be here!

The Chinese leaders sacrifice a few thousand men in coal miner deaths each year to keep hundreds of millions from freezing to death. Under communist rule it is an exceptable loss.
It gives insight into who we have mistakenly aligned ourselves with. They are swallowing our country up because someone was stupid and didn't realize, they have 5 times as many people as we do and they are communist.
Capable of destroying our much smaller capitalist society.

china is where our future enemy lies, there state run govt. are double digit increases in military spending, add manipulating their currency, then use that advantage to buy our country, whats going to happen when the inevitible major conflict( they are making deals with our enemies not good for u.s.) ? Jim is right they not only outnumber us 5 to1, but state run countries have a draft? Not like ours. Pay attention as we try to level the playing field on trade. They have spent the last 10 years developing ways to cripple us, sattelite busters, they own enough of our debt, the interest alone is stagering. Cheap walmart products dont help just makes our govt. Weak. They will have mining issues, thats alot of people to provide heat, food shelter for. Almost 300 – in that mine.wow.

China couldn't declare a real combat war against U.S., they know they couldn't win (as of now), they are waging is a silent economic war and they are winning. They're flooding money on this election by secretly financially backing-up some candidates this November and will ultimately tear this country apart. BEWARE!!!!!

the little guys who write these comments echo what I hear every day on the streeet. Mystery: How come those in Washington are so much more intelligent and knowledgeable than the rest of us and continue with what we think are stupid policies, agreements, etc.. Why don't they share their reasons with us so we'll quit complaining about cheap foreign made crap, rilduculous deficit spending which gets us nowhere, etc. If I wanted to destroy this country, I could think of no better way to do it that run the government as we are presently doing.
