Controversial pastor gets free car for not burning Quran

The Rev. Terry Jones, the Florida pastor who caused a firestorm last month when he came close to staging a public Quran burning, is getting a new car courtesy of a New Jersey dealership.

In the run-up to the planned book-burning, Brad Benson Hyundai in New Brunswick offered Jones a vehicle if the pastor backed down on his threat.

“We heard on the news that he was going to burn the Quran," Benson Hyundai general manager David Canton told CNN on Saturday.

After condemnations from around the world, Jones called off the burning.

A representative from Jones' church, Dove World Outreach Center, called Benson Hyundai recently to see whether the offer was still good, Canton said.

It was. Jones is getting a 2011 Hyundai Accent, valued at around $13,600.

"He stood up to his end of the bargain and we’re standing up to ours,” Canton said.

A woman who answered the phone Saturday at Dove World Outreach Center in Gainesville, Florida, said Jones would donate the car to a Muslim charity.

Seriously? A free car for a bigot? Am I missing some historical precedent here for hateful people profiting from their evilness? Did slave owners get a free horse and wagon when they didn't beat a slave? Did members of the Spanish Inquisition get a prize for not killing non-Christians? I thought this country was in the business of not bribing terrorists. You shouldn't reward an evil person for not doing an evil act. Why? Because he's STILL an evil person. He didn't change his ways. Reward good people for doing good things....that makes a much better lesson doesn't it?

I must say I am please how this turned out. No things were burned, and a car gets donated to a charity. Who woulda thunk it?

i think it would be better for the economy if we would all execute senior citizens once they reach a certain age. it would save us tax payers a lot of money and the roads would be safer as well. id say we should start killing them when they reach 60 or so.they could also make a tv show out of it where we could watch them die slowly and painfully and in different creative ways. recession over.

hopefully this is a step to bring mutual respect of the two religions showing that hatred produce nothing good. Both religions, as others, have both very good people & some very bad people that go to extremes.

HOLD THE HECK UP! Are you 4 real?

Okay check it. I'm about to hold a Bible Stew fest. We'll going to build a huge toilet, pee and poop in it, throw 1000+ bibles into it, and make ourselves a stew. (praise the Lord)

But I'll call it off if you get me a ..... moped?

Each one of us who write these comments just want to have our say. No harm done. Maybe it is even healthy. But, multiply this compulsion many times over & you have the obsession to burn holy books. An obsession can be disguised as faith when it is actually a mental dysfunction or illness. Who knows the difference between a religious leader & an overblown outspoken hypocrite?

It truly shows that men with small minds, no education, ignorance and love for attention could be brought off with a 2011 Hyundai Accent. Idiot....This man is a fool with a capital "F". He would have or may have already caused more harm to trying to get this situation resolved. He doesn't realize that he's going against a group of people who want to die. Who want 72 virgins when a normal man can't handle 1. Is acts may have cost the lives of Service personnel in 2 wars that America should not be in. He's also part of the problem of free speech which doesn't let me say what I really want to say about him.
