Controversial pastor gets free car for not burning Quran

The Rev. Terry Jones, the Florida pastor who caused a firestorm last month when he came close to staging a public Quran burning, is getting a new car courtesy of a New Jersey dealership.

In the run-up to the planned book-burning, Brad Benson Hyundai in New Brunswick offered Jones a vehicle if the pastor backed down on his threat.

“We heard on the news that he was going to burn the Quran," Benson Hyundai general manager David Canton told CNN on Saturday.

After condemnations from around the world, Jones called off the burning.

A representative from Jones' church, Dove World Outreach Center, called Benson Hyundai recently to see whether the offer was still good, Canton said.

It was. Jones is getting a 2011 Hyundai Accent, valued at around $13,600.

"He stood up to his end of the bargain and we’re standing up to ours,” Canton said.

A woman who answered the phone Saturday at Dove World Outreach Center in Gainesville, Florida, said Jones would donate the car to a Muslim charity.

Anyone who grouses about the pastor receiving a car for changing his mind
(a kind of "repenting," since he didn't know he would receive a reward, and
already has decided to donate it to a Muslim charity), seems to me to be like
the prodigal son's brother who groused to their father because he had, if we
may be permitted to put a modern twist on it, never threatened to burn anything
sacred to a religion rejected by the Jewish people.
By the way, do you know who was most upset by the return of the prodigal son?
The fatted calf. (Courtesy of one of my godsons, who gave that as an answer in
a Sunday school class to that same question.)

Isn't nice to know that when you go to heaven you'll be living in the paradise among tons of people like him? I think I'm going to go ahead and be a false witness to someone. And Ladies, if you fear of living in heaven with people like him, give me a call as I'm ready for some serious adultery session (one at the time though, please).

There is no such thing as a free car in America. I bet it comes with a compulsory maintenance plan that will cost him thousands over the next 5 years. Then there is the insurance. Also, the government is about to raise the fuel tax, and inflation is going to increase dramatically over the next few years as they print more money so the fuel price will also skyrocket. Giving someone a car is more of a burden than a gift.

I don't see how its bad. Turning away from lunatics who try and justify their actions, no matter how selfish and hateful, with the idea of the supernatural sounds like exactly what has advanced science and technology in the western world since the Renaissance.

"A woman who answered the phone Saturday at Dove World Outreach Center in Gainesville, Florida, said Jones would donate the car to a Muslim charity."

If that is true, then we are witnessing the true form of Christianity: redemption from sin and freedom from hatred.

For the sake of all that is good, I hope it is true.

      ?

That'd be true if he was donating just about any car other than a Hyundai Accent.
