Pirates hijack ship near Kenyan coast

Pirates hijacked a gas vessel with a crew of 17 off the coast of Kenya, officials said Sunday.

The Singapore-registered liquefied petroleum gas vessel issued a distress call Saturday night.

At the time the pirates boarded, the vessel was on its way from Mombasa, Kenya, to Mahe, Seychelles, according to the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore.

The port authority said it was working with the ship's owner and other government agencies to secure its release.

Greed is good! Please continue to support the billionaire sponsored Tea Party.
As long as our crooks are smarter than the worlds crooks we will continue to have a better life style.

Rocketman. You're incorrect about the campaign funding of Tea Party candidates. Chamber of Commerces with small businesses have been part of almost every community in the United States of America for decades. They are as American as apple pie and their members are NOT billionaires. Furthermore a Tea Party candidate asked for a million $5 donations and received 14 million dollars in one day from average people.
Anyone who attacks The Chamber of Commerce, think of how absurd and disgustingly unamerican that is, should be laughed at. This is being led by a Communist person named Obama. Communists have murdered over 100 million of their own people. Robert Gibbs and his ilk disregard that, knowing people will just hate the Tea Party.
To pirates. They must be attacked by our military. Bombing strikes upon their operation facilities. Navy Seals landing and slitting the throats of the pirate leaders at home.
But they aren't from Norway so Obama allows it. Me, I would be ruthless.
    Pirating would be ended.

Only problem is that if you end piracy in a location like Somalia, when the government does nothing to reach out to the people who have no livelihood left as no social services exist, then the population becomes increasingly reliant upon the kindness of radical Muslim elements in the region. al-Qaeda off shoots are gaining minor popularity all over the third world because they are the only ones offering a form of salvation army to the masses. What's worse? Fighting pirates, or a generation lost to fundamentalists? It may seem simple, and I wish it was, but a black or white solution is not going to make anything easier.

Laughable that an independent and intelligent thinker such as you could fall under the spell of the right wing propaganda machine. Although the thing about slitting throats is over the top.
These pirates are mostly impoverished youngsters with no other way to make a buck. They don't want violent confrontations. This is the only way they can make money. Perhaps we could set up a chamber of commerce in their town to provide them with alternatives.
This would be a better way for beady eyed billionairs to spend their money. Better than buying votes and paying ransoms.

As a note, I was with the USS Bainbridge DDG-96 for the Somali hostage crisis in 2009 with Captain Phillips. I will support your argument that this is all, in fact, based on economy and instability in the region for the past several decades. The pirates we encountered were very young men bred from a generation of trauma in a country with no real government, or infrastructure for business or education. They did not understand why we, as Americans, took their piracy and subsequent hostage taking as seriously as we did. They were oblivious to the problem being anything other than a form of international business. They were so naive about why we would label them as terrorists, an enemy, a prisoner of war, or a military target. Reasoning with them is very difficult, and until policy changes to further support and invest in a more democratic, non-fundamentalist government (which the people do want, they are currently encroached upon by al-Qaeda off shoots and defending their cities and tribal areas to that end), piracy will become the least of our concerns. I say, if the American people want to continue to invest in fighting these actions, they need to understand that the problem lies in a lack of options... The taxes that go towards operations over there might have been invested a long time ago in a stable ally.

Rocketship, lisababy, Jim and Joe. Can you please just shut up about politics? There are 17 men being held hostage offshore by a group of pirates from a 3rd world country. Nobody involved in this situation give a crap about your political views, and neither do any of the people who have read it.

I love it when people say that... It's such a wonderful way of reflecting on just how much we have in common with their ideologies concerning us! We're one big happy family.

If we could give these pirates a more useful and meaningful way to live their lives.
It would be a more cost effective means of dealing with the problem.
Have other thoughts on this but will wait untill situation is resolved to share them.

Rocketship. No, I know better not to read a piece of garbage newspaper like the New York Times. You liberals really don't understand evil people exist and what would best if most of you encounter one or a boat full them with AK47s. Talk to the yacht hostages. Let's magically put your girlfriends or wives on it.
I don't give an f what their b.s. justification is or what your fuked up minds can come up with for them . Kidnapping IS WRONG! Ransom demanding IS WRONG! Ransom paying IS WRONG! Got that?!
I know. Let' allow poor African American men to go into a 7-11 and hold everyone hostage at gunpoint. Then pay them a 3 million dollar ransom. Have the police clear out so they can walk away. From today on, that's what we do time and time again because they are poor.
Your misguided sympathetic words make me want to vomit! The pirates are going to fry in Hell! How do like them apples?
Get a clue. Don't write no they aren't going to Hell, because I will get even more angry at your disregarding of their victims.
