Ozzy Osbourne on genome testing, Neanderthal lineage

In July, rocker Ozzy Osbourne became one of few to submit his blood to have his full genome sequenced and analyzed.

The results are in, and it turns out his genome reveals some Neanderthal lineage, according to Scientific American.

Osbourne and his wife, Sharon, are expected to discuss the testing and its results Friday at the TEDMED 2010 scientific conference in San Diego, California.

In a Sunday Times of London column (registration required), the former Black Sabbath front man said he was reluctant to submitting to the test at first. He eventually gave in to his curiosity over how he had managed to survive years of hard living and substance abuse.

"Given the swimming pools of booze I've guzzled over the years—not to mention all of the cocaine, morphine, sleeping pills, cough syrup, LSD, Rohypnol... there's really no plausible medical reason why I should still be alive," he wrote.

"Maybe my DNA could say why."

Ozzy is a funny guy.. If you read his book. "I am Ozzy", you will laugh. I never laughed so hard. It's amazing Sharon put up with him so long, but then again.. She is a little crazy too..

I'm Tommy, I'm 7. I think Ozzie is stupid and childish. Maybe when I grow up I will be smart enough to understand why some adults think he's cool.

Well Tommy, someday when you're all grown up your own kids will make fun of the music your generation listens to today. It's just the way of things. As for Ozzy, I met him once (in a supermarket of all places) and my impression was that of a friendly and genuine person.

I'm 37, and Crazy Train is still a bada** tune.

Ozzy rocks. He did his thing. He lived to tell about it, and he admitted that a lot of what he did was a big mistake. Live hard, or die trying. At least the man has really lived.

    • OZZY!!

Tommy suck it! Ozzy was changed peoples lives! I'm 18 and as far as I am concerned everyone who is 30+ grew up living to the some of the best music ever. the genre deffersity that is out there today wouldn't exsist it wasn't for the bands that started popping up in the 60's qand 70's through rtight up to today. most of the top chart pop, rap and everything else used a song from the golden age of rock n' roll.

The object of life is not to arrive at the grave in a well preserved body, but instead to slide in sideways, completely used up, shouting "That was a helluva ride!"

So if Ozzy has Neanderthal, who else does? What benefits/problems does this give someone living today? If this is true I guess we know what happened to Neanderthall. They just became heavy metal singers.

No duh he has Neanderthal in his lineage. There was an article on CNN a few months ago. ALL Caucasians have Neanderthal in them. It was discovered that one of the expressions of the gene is white skin. Way to go on your reporting skills. Next newsflash, America was actually inhabited by many millions of people when it was "discovered" by Columbus.

Bill, that was fantastic. You beat me to the fish joke...
But in all honesty, I like Ozzy and Sharron a lot. And I'm curious as to how Ozzy is still alive. The Neanderthal thing wouldn't explain it because, like someone else mentioned, it was discovered that most Caucasian people have that gene in them. And boy, I know a lot of white folk who died from a lot less drug usage... And no, he is not immortal...
