NORAD escorts aircraft to New York's JFK airport

Fighter jets escorted Emirates flight 201 to New York's JFK airport.

[Update 4:00 p.m.] Emirates Airline has issued a statement regarding the origin of the flight:

"Emirates Flight EK201, which has just landed at JFK, originated in Dubai not in Yemen, as reported in the US media. More information will follow as soon as we have it. Emirates is co-operating fully with the US authorities."

[Update 3:36 p.m.] Emirates flight 201 lands at New York's JFK airport escorted by fighter jets.

[Update 3:11 p.m.] NORAD is escorting a passenger flight from the United Arab Emirates to New York's JFK airport “out of an abundance of caution,” a NORAD spokesman said.

Two Canadian CF-18s began to track a civilian aircraft that was “determined to be an aircraft of interest” as it flew over Canadian airspace, spokesman John Cornelio said.

Two US F-15s then picked up the escort to JFK, which is ongoing.

A law enforcement source says that the flight being escorted is Emirates 201.  The flight originated in Sanaa, Yemen, yesterday and is en route from Dubai to JFK, according to Emirates Airline.

The FBI and Port Authority Police are scheduled to meet the fight, FBI Special Agent Richard Kolko said.

"This is only because there is cargo from Yemen on the flight.  There is no known threat associated with this cargo or this flight,” he said.

Yes! Please combine CNN International anchors with US CNN anchors during the Newsroom EVERY day at least for an hour of each anchors' 2-hour shift. It would better balance US programming by bringing us more international stories - which I know many of your viewers want!! And I've been asking for it - with never, ever an email in return - ever since you removed Your World Today, which used to be on at noon, eastern time. You put on The Ballot Bowl, ostensibly for election coverage and never returned that ONE hour of International coverage!! Please let Hala Gorani, Michael Holmes, Zain Verjee and the other CNNi anchors join US anchors during the Newsroom every day! At the same time, please let them bring in more international content so CNN gets away from this ultra-politics focus + tabloid stories. When u broke into the mine rescue in Chile to show a debate in Delaware...I knew the priorities at CNN had changed far too much!

Lol Mike, this is a great example of American ego. "Just send it to Canada." I'm Canadian – you expect that we're up here saying "yeah sure, just send us all of your dangerous planes so they can explode here."

The plane was escorted out of our airspace, clearly we're not going to willingly escort it back in.

Yes, of course we profile it because its from yemen. Thats the smart thing to do if you believe there is any possible chance that there could be danger, and when your intelligence is telling you there could be a threat originating from Yemen. What harm is there in being cautious? I know, you would rather see something explode than God forbid insult some muslim guy.

However, if you feel Bill Bobaggins (we are not the same user) does not have the right to express what he feels is wrong with this country, then what did you fight for? I'm not sure what your politics are, but from where I'm sitting, it seems like whenever conservatives outline what is wrong with this country, its a call to arms and reason to start a revolution. Whenever liberals do, conservatives say they hate America. Do you realize how absurd that is? We have a lot of problems in this country, and if you want to bury your head in the sand and pretend they don't exist and we are perfect, then, whether you realize it or not, you are doing far more harm to this country than good.

@ Gabriel Dumont...Having actually lived in both Canada and the US, I can assure you that the US is the better country. The biggest problem with Canada is the political apathy on the part of the people. Canadians seem far more involved in US politics than their own. Canadian politicians seize on this apathy and pass massive tax increases (like the GST) that people don't like but don't protest. They make heavy cuts from necessary programs like health care and education, and people complain but they don't protest. The only thing Canada has going for it is that they've taxed their citizens to death enough to not be in a massive fiscal hole like the US, but at what cost? It's almost impossible for anyone making less than $ 75,000 a year to buy a home in most major Canadian cities/suburbs. It's far more difficult to start a successful small business in Canada. The health care system in Canada is equivalent to a second-rate HMO in the U.S. And for all of this, you pay about 40-50% of your income.

@ tomtom: So very true! It's funny how when liberals point out what they perceive as problems in our country, that conservatives tell them to leave. But when conservatives have problems with the country, they feel its justification for a revolt of some sort. I wish the conservatives would take their own advice and kick all the teabaggers out being that they have so many problems with this country!
