Bone found in search for missing North Carolina girl

Search teams have discovered a bone that may be related to the disappearance of 10-year-old Zahra Baker, police in North Carolina said Wednesday.

The bone will be sent to the medical examiner's office in Chapel Hill for further examination, the Hickory Police Department said.

In the past week, the Hickory Police Department said it has recovered key pieces of evidence in the search for the 10-year-old cancer survivor, who was reported missing by her stepmother on October 9.

Zahra Baker was reported missing by her stepmother October 9.

Police on Monday confirmed that a prosthetic leg found last week in a brushy area off a road belonged to Zahra, who lost her leg to bone cancer when she was 5.

Also last week, employees at an environmental landfill found a mattress thought to have belonged to Zahra. Investigators believe the mattress was disposed of days before Zahra was reported missing, and hoped to use it to reinforce the timeline of her disappearance.  DNA tests on the mattress are being performed.

The discovery of the bone also comes two days after a Catawba County grand jury indicted Zahra's stepmother, Elisa Baker, on an obstruction of justice charge related to the search for Zahra.

The charge stems from a fake ransom note that authorities say Baker admitted to writing to distract police from the search for Zahra.

Zahra's father, Adam Baker, is in custody on charges of submitting worthless checks and failing to appear in court.

Police earlier acknowledged that he faced bad-check charges, which are unrelated to the disappearance of his daughter. But they did not initially arrest him, as he had been helping authorities in their search.

The disappearance of Zahra, who was hearing impaired and had persevered through numerous health battles, has made international headlines.

Baker and his daughter, who are from Australia, moved to the United States after he met his future wife, Elisa Baker, online.

Meanwhile Wednesday, crews continued to search for evidence near the lake where Zahra's prosthesis was found, CNN affiliate WBTV reported.

Let's not jump to conclusions. I know how it looks. However, this girl may still be alive. Her stepmother may be innocent of murder, assuming the girl is dead. (She is guilty of obstruction, of course.)

And why would she obstruct if she was innocent???? A: she wouldn't.

I feel exactly the same way. I know I would do everything I could to be the best possible parent to a child, because that's what they deserve. I think these parents let drugs or alcohol or greed and a life of crime overshadow the most precious gift, which is the gift of having your own family. Having family (or true friends) who care about you and love you is the greatest thing on Earth. Unfortunately, a LOT of people have no one. I do think Zahra was loved by her extended family, but when your immediate family doesn't prioritize you, it's a vastly unfair life for a child. One day, they will realize they had a beautiful gift and now have nothing, and that it's their own fault. That's why I believe in life imprisonment, if they are guilty of murder or covering up murder.

I just wonder how many people who say things like this actually go out and foster or adopt a child themselves.

I hope you find it in you to realize that there is no god and you have wasted years of your life following a collection of myths written by bronze age shepherds.

      Charles,

I hope you find it in you to realize that there IS a God and you have wasted years of your life ignoring the Word of God, a.k.a., the Bible.

Charles, no one actually KNOWS whether there is a God, so if people find comfort it in, or it helps them be better people, let them have their beliefs. I know a lot of bad things happen "in the name of God," but a lot of religious people are all about love and caring. To me, the biblical God and Heaven also seem like myths, but it's kind of cruel to force that belief on other people who find comfort in religion. To each his/her own.

Charles, why are you so hateful in your responses to people that believe in God? I challenge you to study the Bible and see for yourself that God does not bring these horrible things on people. It is through our sin that brought about such wretchedness. We all have a free will.

It takes faith to believe in God. It takes faith to believe that the Bible is God's Word and that it is true. God loves you as well, even though you are so hateful towards him and his believers. He would welcome you with open arms if you would put your faith in him. Unfortunately if you do not, you will spend eternity burning in Hell, which would be your choice, not God's. His will is that "noone would perish, but that all would come to repentance". Whether YOU believe it or not, it's true.

There's nothing more disgusting than to see Christians proselytize and spew their deluded beliefs in light of a tragedy. And you vile people actually worship this invisible creature and at the same time believe this same creature has the power to prevent the torment of this poor girl. I'm glad I'm atheist for I'm not susceptible to this hate and delusion. You all make me sick!

If there is a "god", it is either completely apathetic to the human condition and completely uncaring about small children or people at all or is completely incompetent and impotent to intercede in any way, shape, or form. Yeah – Religion easily has the greatest bullshi* story ever told. Think about it, religion has actually convinced people that there's an INVISIBLE MAN...LIVING IN THE SKY...who watches every thing you do, every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a list of ten special things that he does not want you to do. And if you do any of these ten things, he has a special place full of fire and smoke and burning and torture and anguish where he will send to live and suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry for ever and ever 'til the end of time...but he loves you.
