Wade Phillips out as Dallas Cowboys' coach

[Updated at 5:57 p.m. ET] Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones confirmed in a news conference Monday afternoon that Wade Phillips was out as the team's head coach, and that assistant head coach Jason Garrett will lead the team on an interim basis.

Jones also said he is elevating defensive line coach Paul Pasqualoni to defensive coordinator.

"An in-season coaching change is something that I've not done before. It's something that I was reluctant to even consider as late as this this past week. But at this time I believe … what’s in the best interest of the organization and the fans is a coaching change," Jones said.

Jones previously had said that Phillips would finish the season as coach. But Sunday night's 45-7 loss to Green Bay - moving the Cowboys' record this season to 1-7 - helped Jones change his mind.

"I don't like the way [changing my mind] looks stability-wise as far as our organization is concerned – not my own self, but the organization – but I think [the situation] called for it, and I recognized that after the game that we just weren't playing winning football, and our best chance was to make this change," Jones said. "Now with that, I don't apologize to anybody about changing my mind."

Jones said Garrett would have a chance to secure the job long-term - especially if the team has success over the next eight games - and that Garrett has "the temperament [and] the disposition to affect a culture change."

[Original post] Wade Phillips is out as the Dallas Cowboys' head coach following an abysmal performance by the team against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday night, a CNN affiliate and ESPN are reporting.

Many people were expecting the move (some were demanding it), and the search "wade phillips fired" was trending No. 1 on Google on Monday afternoon.

America's Team is off to a 1-7 start, their worst since 1989, after a preseason full of Super Bowl hype. Fans and observers have placed the blame squarely on the team's coaches.

CNN affiliate KTXA in Dallas said offensive coordinator Jason Garrett, an assistant head coach and one-time Cowboys backup quarterback, will take the team's reins.

Phillips, the Cowboy's seventh coach, compiled a 35-24 record in three seasons with Dallas. Only one of those wins came in the playoffs, a 34-14 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles in 2009. Phillips' ouster marks the first time the Cowboys have canned a coach mid-season.

Players told CBS 11 that a team meeting was held at 3 p.m. The Cowboys are scheduled to hold a news conference at 4 p.m.

Owner Jerry Jones has repeatedly said that Phillips would finish the season, but after Sunday's 45-7 shellacking in Green Bay, he said there would be "consequences" for players and coaches.

For God's sake, quit calling the Cowboys "America's Team". That term smacks of arrogance. They are not nor have they ever been, despite what some hype-meister wanted the country to think. They belong to Dallas, and Dallas can keep them as far as I'm concerned. As for Wade Phillips, sorry about his firing but given the team's fortunes this season it was hardly unexpected. I guess Jerry Jones really didn't mean it last week when he said he wasn't planning on firing his head coach midseason.

Fer cryin' out loud, NO they are NOT America's team, if Cowboy fans in Texas really knew how much the rest of the country hates the Cowboys they would never perpetuate that ridiculous myth. I'm only hoping that this crash and burn will once and for all purge the last remaining vestige of that insane America's team designation from each and every corner of the nation.

In what sense do they "belong" to Dallas? Players and coaches, and sometimes entire teams move freely to wherever pays the best and provides the best chance of winning. The supposed affiliation between a town and a team is just marketing. They could as well be the "Budweiser Cowboys" and I'm surprised no team has tried it yet.

The Cowboys aren't America's team, they're not even Dallas' team. They are Arlington, Texas' team. Get over it DFW area, you're nothing special. You're a hot, humid concrete parking lot that likes to call itself a city.

Actually, "america's team" IS appropriate. Full of bluster, arrogant, talks a good game, has more money than god, but as for results? Pathetic, abysmal, behind the rest of the "league", and falling farther behind.

      Sounds like america to me.

Agreed Sam. For a team to come close to being "America's Team", people would have to like them. Never have been. It was a nice little media thing for them in the 70's though. The only team that belongs to any one group of fans is the Packers.

To the Cowboys fans, they are America's Team. It feeds their delusional self-image. If America's Team is 1-7, what does that say for the rest of the league? So what if they've won some super bowls. Other teams have also and they don't proclaim the be anything bu super bowl champions. Ahh the arrogance of some...

Hi all, I didn't mean to offend anyone with the "America's Team" reference. It's more an informal nickname than a moniker connoting that everyone in America loves them. I certainly know that's not the case. Check this short video at the NFL Network to learn how they got the nickname:

Back in the 70's they had a huge out-of-region following. They got the best ratings when televised nationally. The name was sort of appropriate at the time and it stuck.

My guess is that there are times they wish they did not have the appellation–now it sort of comes off with a twist of irony and reminds everyone that the glory days are in the past.

All-in-all, there are probably more important things to worry about today.

The reason they ARE America's team, whether you like it or not, is because they are the most recognized sports team in the world. A lot of other countries associate Americans with cowboys from the old west.

I agree, the best business men know for a fact that, just because they have invested money in a team, that they need someone who actually knows something about the business to run it. Let's face it, Jerry Jones knows little to nothing about football, so it would behoove him to find someone that he believes in, and leave the poor guy to do his job, whilst he removes his nose to do HIS job, and that is to support him in every way possible, financially and otherwise!

This problem won't go away with just the coach. The problem is that most of the players have a hard time just carrying their egos around and adding a ball and game over loads them. The cowboys won't be a decent team until they become and team and not a group of wannabe super stars.
